Great Teaching, Inspired Learning
In today’s schools, 21st century knowledge, understandings, skills and
values are at the heart of great teaching and inspired learning. Young
people develop a core of academic content knowledge, see the
relevance of their learning and develop a love of learning in their
classrooms so they remain lifelong learners. (from a blue print for
action: 2013 Great Teaching, Inspired Learning).
Performance and Development Framework
As part of the Great Teaching, Inspired Learning Framework, teachers
develop their own goals ensuring a positive culture for their own
ongoing learning so they can meet the needs of all students. Our last
two staff meetings have focused on developing professional goals,
identifying appropriate evidence of achievement, inclusion of peer
class observation and effective feedback as quality teachers. This is
part of the new Performance and Development Framework that
ensures teachers too are lifelong learners.

Public Education is taking.

Dreyfus Building, on campus. Did you know that MIT has 80 Nobel Prize winners on staff? That’s
lots of clever people on staff.
Deputy Principal on the Move
While the rest of the school is enjoying frosts and fogs in wintry Yass, Ms Pinson
will be enjoying summer in the USA. She is off to Boston in June to attend the
graduation of her son from MIT University. Mrs Riach will be holding the fort back
at school and Ms Pinson looks forward to seeing everyone again at the start of
Term 3.
Biggest Morning Tea
Yass High School’s Community Class students gave their time freely to take part in
the Yass Valley Community Biggest Morning Tea, Thursday 28 May at the Yass
Soldiers Memorial Hall. Students assisted elderly people by making and carrying
coffee from the coffee caravan, cooking pikelets and cleaning up tables.
Congratulations students on your great community involvement.

Captain’s Corner
Hey Yass High people! Hopefully you’re all surviving those mid-term blues. We are
certainly finding it difficult sometimes! So if you’re ever feeling like it’s the end of
the world because of school work, feel free to talk to us because we’ve had plenty
of near misses just like everyone else.
On the plus side we have had lots of extra activities going on! Congratulations to
all the participants who made it to regional cross country and zone athletics, the
people who got down and dirty in the Cattle Clinic last Friday, the girls’ soccer
team, the rehearsals leading up to the musical and the students who went to the
Da Vinci Competition. You’re all doing an excellent job at representing Yass High
in and out of school.
This week’s teacher of the week
is….
We’re going to make it a bit
harder for you this week.
Clue 1: The teacher is a female...
Clue 2: Her hair has alternate
personalities...
Clue 3: Her classroom had lots of
rats in it... (pictures of course)
Have you guessed yet? Well for all those who are still struggling, our teacher of the
week is… Miss McQueen! Not only does she have the coolest fashion style out,
but she is also a really great teacher. We’ve had numerous people come up to us
sharing about all their interesting lessons and the things they’ve been taught. Who
knew history could be so interesting?! And with all the work being displayed in the
foyers it’s hard not to be amazed by all of her student’s efforts. So thank you to
Miss McQueen for enlightening us with your teaching, you’re a true asset to Yass
High School!
And finally our riddle of the week. Thought we’d change it up.
Q. When can you add two to eleven and get one as the correct answer?
In Concert 2015
A. When you add two hours to eleven o’clock,
you get one o’clock.

Integrated Learning Moves North
To coincide with the opening of the new building, Year Nine
commenced their first foray into the next stop on the integrated
learning journey – Asia.
While the Asian culture unit covers a range of nations such as
Korea, Japan and China, it will also delve into others such as
those of Arabic, Indian and Indonesian ethnicities. Students were
introduced to the Japanese region and culture by Miss McQueen
who instructed the grade on how to create Origami. This was
prefaced by a brief history of the crane and its origins.
Despite initial struggles with the intricacies required of the number
and type of folds, the students persisted and were able to come up
away with some beautiful origami cranes.
Equestrian Success
Congratulations to Isobel and Naomi Kelly who have been selected to represent Yass High School to compete at this year’s Equestrian Interschool Championships in Sydney in June.

In Concert
On Monday 18th, a small but wonderful group of students travelled to Sydney to
rehearse and perform with the NSW Public Schools Combined Secondary Choir.
The day was spent rehearsing with the artist Lior and various State School
ensembles, as well as presenting new works composed by Elena Katz-Chernin
and having the composer speak about her inspiration for the works.
Monday's concert was live streamed on you tube and
the video can be viewed via the link below.
This is the unedited version the In Concert team is
currently working on an edit which will remove the wait
at the start and the interval, and will be higher quality.

Zone Cross Country
Last Friday around 60 of Yass High’s finest
travelled to Goulburn to participate in the
Zone Cross Country. It was a beautiful day
for it, with abundant sunlight, we even had to
break out the hats and sunscreen. But out on
the track, it was all about the Starr (forgive
me).
Year 7 and 8 were well represented but more
participation could be hoped for from Years
9, 10, 11 and 12 next year. The runners from
Yass enjoyed a reasonable amount of
success on the track, and we have 13
runners heading on to the Regional Carnival
coming up, congratulations to all of you.
While we had no first placed runners this
year, we had our own win in the team spirit and support that the students showed
each other. Some people were even able to nap on the bus without getting drawn
on, a credit to the quality of our students. Also a big shout out to Ms Corkhill and
Ms Bills for coming down to organise and support the runners. Your dedication is
greatly appreciated.
- Hayden Starr.

ACT Student Auslan Group
On the 13th of May Yass High School student Sarah Makin travelled to Canberra’s
Arboretum to attend the ACT Student Auslan Group. Students from schools around
the region attended as well as their Auslan teachers and signing aides. Mrs Barrett
and Mrs Serafin drove over with Sarah and had a wonderful time practising their
signing with a range of new people. For Sarah it was a wonderful opportunity to
talk with fellow students and make new friends. As you can tell from the pictures it
was a freezing cold day however the students and adults had a great time
exploring the Arboretum grounds and having lunch in the main centre. Mrs Serafin,
Mrs Barrett, and Sarah would like to thank Mrs Martin for organising the three of
them to attend the event.

Tech Talk
The technology department would like to thank the two IT VET classes for all the
support offered in the past month in establishing and implementing the hardware
and software in the new building. Students in these classes were given the
responsibility of building and implementing the technology before regular classes
commenced. All worked tirelessly and can be proud of their efforts. Notable
mention goes to Chris Loney for his efforts. Thanks for your support IT students!
The success of the technology industry has led to a wave of enrolments into
computer based subjects at Yass High. Four classes in years 11 and 12, and three
more in the junior years means students are investigating of variety of technology
tools preparing them for the future. Tasks and scopes for all computing subjects
taught at Yass High are available from the faculty website http://purplezeus.com
In years nine and ten, students have begun exploring the
concept of input-process-output through the use of
hardware devices like the MakeyMakey and LittleBits. The
equipment can be used to modify and implement new
forms of input to create whatever the student wants.
Using the MakeyMakey, all students
were thoroughly engaged and even
tried implementing anything they could
find capable of conducting electrical
current to see how effective the
computer works. Two possible
methods were the human chain and a
banana!
9 -20
Some students preferred to create the
electrical currents with the aid of LittleBits.
This hardware encourages circuits in
seconds and students were able to create
anything they wanted using the apparatus.
The creations ranged from a mini-keyboard
with an oscillator to a light switch powered
via voice commands, and a buzzer that
sounds out Morse code.

Fantastic Food Tech
Up…. Up and Away!!
It’s been a fantastic few weeks in the kitchens here at Yass High School. All of the
food classes have now had their turn to cook in our brand new facility and the word
is – Great!! It’s so lovely to have a new spacious room to get the creative juices
flowing! We are looking forward to the first use of the bistro facility with a few event
ideas up our sleeve….. Watch this space!
Year 7 were the first class to kick off in the new food technology kitchen and made
sure they cooked up a pizza muffin storm, the smell of lemon delicious wafted
throughout the building for the rest of the week – Yummo! It’s fantastic to see the
students embracing this new room and really respecting what it represents for
Yass High School. There are not many schools who could boast such a beautiful
food technology space. It’s a far cry from the kitchens of the old T block, nostalgic
as they were.
Congratulations to all the
students who’ve been using the
kitchens and keep up the good
work (and yummy dishes)

Open Girls’ Soccer
On Monday the 25th of May, the Yass High open girls’ soccer team played Moss
Vale, in Moss Vale, in the semi finals of the school competition. After having a goal
difference of 32-2, after a 7-1 win against Karabar, 14-1 win against Braidwood and
an 11-0 win against Queanbeyan, the girls felt the pressure.
The Yass girls had a slow start to the game, and Moss Vale put the pressure on
scoring a goal in mid-first half. Second half was dominated by the Yass High team,
playing better than ever, who after several big chances managed to get the ball in
the net, equalising the score to one all.
When the referee blew the final whistle for full time, the score was still 1-1, which
meant the game went in to 10 minute extra halves, on golden goal. Yass continued
dominating in first extra half, but slightly let Moss Vale into the game again. Moss
Vale scored the golden goal in second extra half, and the game was over.
It was a close match played in good spirit, and both teams would have deserved
the win. The Yass High girls fought and played incredibly well, and did deserve
credit for their commitment. Goal scorer of the game was Amalie Ringdal Birkhol,
and player of the match was Ashley Parker, who had to step in for Amy Kelly in
goals, after she got a black eye from a great save.
13 -20
Thank you girls for all your efforts throughout the competition, and for representing
Yass High in such a good way. You all played incredibly well, and getting all the
way to the semi-finals is really something to be proud of. Also, a big thank you to
Mr. Barrett who lead the team with his brilliant coaching. – Amalie Ringdal Birkhol
Thanks for running the lines, Jack Gallagher.

their MTPs involving sewing, indigo dying, embroidery and other techniques.
Micheal Williams , Zeke Groom , Tess McLaughlin , Archie Campbell and
Charlie Johnson display their tie dyed t-shirts in the new textile rooms.
What’s Happening in Textiles
What a fantastic time for Yass High. We are into our new rooms and they are well worth the wait. Yr 12 Textiles students have been participating in Saturday workshops to get their Major Textile Projects completed for next term. Fabric books, a textile art quilt, a double bed quilt and a textile dragon sculpture are all items being created. It has been wonderful to have the new surrounds to complete quality work.
Year 7 textiles have finished some great bags for the first rotation of 2015. They also did some other projects such as tie dying a t-shirt and making a soft toy.

Aden Nasralla, Amy Halley, Sharlie Patterson, and Sophie Lorkin
display their unique bags. Oscar Betts and Giorgia Butylewicz display
their soft toys, and Tess McLaughlin, Teneal Atkinson and Jonah

From: Raye Abouchabake Sent: Thursday, 14 May 2015 1:12 PM To: Martha Gray Subject: Re: work placement follow up
Hi Martha
Brodi Smith was by far one of the best work placements students I have had in 19 years of trading.
She was easy to teach, eager to learn, not afraid to try something new and had no problem dealing with customers from her first day on.
I would hire her in a heartbeat if she lived closer. She fit in instantly and my other staff really loved having her around. It was a shame the week came to an end and sad to say goodbye.
Brodi's communication skills were excellent, she never hesitated in asking a question or texting me with any concerns regarding her uniform her hair and her general appearance (which was perfect).
There are no areas of concern at all and I would like to say thank you for sending her to us!
I will complete the survey attached and mail to you shortly.
Kindest regards,
Raye Abouchabake
