he Yateem Centre, was the firstmallinBahrain, and it celebrates

its 30th birthday next year. Once inside, the Centre unfolds around you. Loosely cylindrical in shape, it is a cavern of marble and a palace of commerce. The shops are unique and offer a range of products that you’re unlikely tofindinthelargermalls.

Gold and jewellery play an important part here, dazzling visitors with their intricate designs. In total there are more than a dozen jewel and watch outlets, dealing in a full range of classic and modern jewellery

pieces to bargain watches and costume jewellery. Bringing things right up-to-date, there are a number of electronics shops, selling both specialist and mainstream items; and a

number of fashion stores that deal in the latest fashions.

The Yateem Centre wasBahrain’sfirstfullyairconditioned retail space and was designed so that people could shop in comfort all year

round. Whilst resolutely not a souq it retains some of the best of their qualities. There is camaraderie between store keepers not often seen in malls. They all know each

other and will watch out for each other’s stores when essential errands must be run. The store

owners love to talk and will be quick to offer hot sweet tea and a stool for you to sit on. The Yateem Centre feels like how shopping ought to feel

T“There is camaraderie between store keepers not often seen in malls. They all know each other, will watch out for each other’s stores when essential errands must be run.”

Teeming with cultural, religious, and historic treasures, the labyrinth of marvels that can be found in Bab Al Bahrain makes for a truly unique adventure. Whether it’s for shopping or for just browsing the goods, this original – or thereabouts – gate into old Bahrain, which leads to a massive and impressive newly refurbished souq offers the inquisitive tourist an exciting glimpse into this tiny island kingdom.

Over the Moon

She’s been in the business for over 30 years …. Businesswoman Marokh Akhtarzadeh shares how she started her enterprise.

MMarokh Akhtarzadeh

Yateem Centre10

arokh Akhtarzadeh opened her very own shop in

1979 in Manama, after years of working in her father’s business. “This was when I told my dad I wanted my own business, because at the time I didn’t want to work for him anymore as the business was already established,” she says.

She says a lot of what she’s learned in running a business is thanks to her father, Ghulam Akhtarzadeh, who opened

theveryfirstsupermarketanddepartment store in Bahrain in 1966. This was where she made her beginnings in business - when her father made her the

head of the ladies’ department at the store. She was in charge of ordering everything from

underwear, cosmetics and ladies garments. Marokh says she absolutely enjoyed her experience then, and this was what gave her the inspiration to

open her very own shop. When Yateem Centre

opened in 1980, she decided

“People buy whatever they like, and our brands have its own base of loyal customers, most notably those from the KSA, Egypt and Iran,” she emphasises.

to move her shop there - importing and selling ladies’ undergarments, swimwear and cosmetics. “I am responsible for most of the business operations but my husband also helps me out,” she says.

Moon’s Topshop also exclusively trades ballet costumes and supplies. To this day, it remains the sole dealer of high-quality ballet supplies in Bahrain. The supplies are imported from England and sold mostly on retail, with customers coming largely from Saudi Arabia. Marokh explains that the reason she started selling these items was when her daughters who were young then, took up ballet and she found it very difficulttofindballetcostumesfor them, so she decided to sell them herself.

As for the cosmetic brands, they import the brand ‘Flormar’ from Turkey, one of their fastest moving products as well as ‘Karaja’ from Italy - and both are distributed on a wholesale basis in their 25 outlets all over the island, including their branches in the GCC, Egypt and Iran - with stocks replenished every two months.

Business has been good over the years Marokh says, but recalls that the biggest challenge the business has had was when the 2003 financialcrisishit, and she says

things have remained quite

challenging right up

to

this year. So what makes their

products different from big name cosmetic brands? “People buy whatever they like, and our brands have its own base of loyal customers, most notably those from the KSA, Egypt and Iran,” she emphasises.

She also adds that their steady base of clients like buying their products because they are priced mid-range. “It’s not very expensive and teenagers and young women who are working like to buy makeup that they can afford,” explains Marokh.

Future plans include launching more outlets and negotiations with some of the new shopping centres in Bahrain - to also open shops there.

At the end of the day what motivates her to get up in the morning and attend to her business? “My grandchildren are my inspiration - they are ten, four and three years old. They bringhappinessandfulfilmentin my life.”

So what’s her message for aspiring entrepreneurs who want to try their luck in starting a business?

“Start small and everything will follow. Something small will eventually become big - so they

should not hesitate,” she says simply •

Moon’s Topshop is located at the

ground floor, Yateem Centre,

Manama.
