When you see a mask, youare likely to get intriguedby it, as the object is
essentially a caricature of thehuman face. Since artists canconvey various expressionsthrough these masks, their usagecan be widely seen in art.
Celebrating the form of disguise is the International MaskExhibition 2012 in the Capital, where over 300 Indian andInternational artists will presenttheir interpretation and art workon a 1” X 1” fibre glass mask.Participants from Assam,Kanyakumari, Jammu, MadhyaPradesh and US and the UK have
presented their works in thisexhibition.
“We just provided the masks tothe artists and it was up to themto paint them accordingly. Thereis no theme to the exhibition,”says artist Asurvedh, president,Nav Siddhartha Art, theorganisers of the show. The maskpainted by him is called HistoricalFace and displays the rhythmicpatterns formed by contours onmonuments. “Masks form animportant part of art,” says artistAmitava Bhowmick, whose maskshows the third eye of Lord Shiva.
While some artists have usedwater colours and oil pastels topaint their masks, others havesuper imposed other objects onthe mask to give it a different
look. “I’ve earlier done a series ofwater colour paintings, with theparrot being the central theme.Even in my mask, I have imposeda parrot on it to give it a 3D look,”says artist Mukesh Sah.
Another artist who has usedthis technique is Arun Pandit, who has painted his mask inwhite and gold, with two horns.“My mask is a tribute to womanhood. Half of it has MonaLisa on it and the other half hasan Indian woman,” saysBhowmick, whose mask is calledOh Monalisa!
“My mask depicts our scantrespect for the environment”,says artist Arpana Caur, whosemask is called - My Earth WasGreen.
