There was once a herd of elephants. Elephants young, elephants old, elephants tall or fat or thin. Elephants like this, that or the other, all different but all happy and all the
same colour. All, that is, except Elmer.
Elmer was different. Elmer was pathwork. Elmer was yellow and orange and red and
pink and purple and blue and green and black and white. Elmer was not elephant colour.
It was Elmer who kept the elephants happy. Sometimes he joked with the other elephants, sometimes they joked with him. But if there was even a little smile, it
was usually Elmer who started it,
One night Elmer couldn’t sleep for thinking, and the think that he was thinking was that he was tired of being different. “Whoever heard of a patchwork elephant?” he
thought. “No wonder that laugh at me.” In the morning before the others were really awake, Elmer slipped quietly
away, unnoticed.
As he walked through the jungle, Elmer met other animals.
They always said: “Good morning, Elmer.” Each time, Elmer smiled and said: “Good morning”
After a long walk, Elmer found what he was looking for – a large bush. A large bush
covered with berries, a large bush covered with elephant-coloured berries. Elmer caught hold of the bush and shook it and shook it so that the berries fell on the
ground
Once the ground was covered in berries, Elmer lay down and rolled over and over – this wayand that way and back again. Then he picked up bunches of berries and
rubbed himself all over, covering himself with berry juice until there wasn’t a sign of any yellow, or orange, or red, or pink, or purple, or blue, or green, or black, or
white. When he had finished, Elmer looked like any other elephant.
After that Elmer set off back to the herd. On the way, he passed the other animals
again. This time each one said to him: “Good morning elephant.” And each time Elmer
smiled and said: “Good morning,” pleased that he wasn’t recognised.
When Elmer rejoined the other elephants, they were all standing quietly. None of
them noticed Elmer as he worked his way to the middle of the herd.
After a while Elmer felt that something was wrong. But What? He looked around:
same old jungle, same old bright sky, same old rain cloud that came over from time to time and lastly same old elephants. Elmer looked at them.
The elephants were standing absolutely still. Elmer had never seen them so serious before. The more he looked at the serious, silent, still, standing elephants, the more he wanted to laugh. Finally he could bear it no longer. He lifted his trunk and at the
top of his voice shouted:
The elephants jumped and fell all ways in surprise. “Oh my gosh and golly!” they said
– and then saw Elmer, helpless with laughter. “Elmer,” they said. “It must be Elmer.” Then the other elephants laughed too, as they
had never laughed before.
As they laughed, the rain cloud burst and when the rain fell on Elmer,
his pacthwork started to show again. The elephants still laughed as Elmer was washed back to normal. “Oh Elmer,” gasped an old elephant. “You’ve played some
good jokes, but this has been the biggest laugh of all. It didn’t take you long to show your true colours.”
“We must celebrate this day every year,” said another. “This will be Elmer’s Day. All elephants must decorate themselves and Elmer
will decorate himself elephant colour.”
That is exactly what the elephants do.
On one day a year they decorate themselves and parade. On that day if you happen to see an elephant ordinary elephant colour, you will know it must be Elmer.

Lesson 11: Warm up:
Main activity:
Instructions: Challenge 1: Recap 30 seconds balance on both legs. Challenge 2: Practise 5 squats on both legs
• Get into your balance position. • Bend the leg you are standing on as low as you can. • Keep your other leg off the floor. • Hold your balance for a second then straighten your leg again. • This is a mini squat! Try and do five mini squats in a row without losing your balance. • Then try it again on the other leg. Which leg is strongest?
Challenge 3: Ankle extensions
• Get into your balance position with one leg off the floor. • With control, slowly lift the heel of your standing leg. • Hold your heel off the floor for one second. • Slowly lower your heel back down to the floor. • Repeat five times. • Now try it on the other leg. Can you do it on both sides? Is one side easier than the other? • Top tip: focus on an object in front of your that is not moving. This will help you to keep your balance!
Fun Challenge: With a partner, have a competition to see who can hold an ankle extension for the longest. Then, both of you change legs and try it on the other side. Does the same person win on both sides?
Success criteria: • Standing foot still • Non-standing foot off the floor • Minimum wobble
Red Challenge
Maintaining balance and on both legs:
1. I can stand still for 30 seconds with eyes closed.
2. I can complete 5 squats. 3. I can complete 5 ankle extensions.

Today we are going to think about what unique makes all of use unique. Elmer is unique because he is an elephant with rainbow and white squares arranged as a patchwork. Main activity:
Instructions: Make sure you are maintaining your balance throughout. Challenge 1: Balancing on an uneven surface
• Put your bean bag/cuddly toy on the ground in front of you. • Stand on it with both legs until you feel balanced. • Slowly lift one leg up in front of you. • Balance on the object for 30 seconds. • Repeat on the other leg.
Success criteria:
• Standing foot still • Non-standing foot off the floor • Minimum wobble
Blue Challenge
Maintaining balance and on both legs.
1. I can stand still on an uneven surface for 30 seconds.
2. I can stand still on an uneven surface for 30 seconds with eyes closed.
3. I can complete 10 squats into ankle extensions. 4. I can complete 5 squats with eyes closed.
Challenge 2: Balancing on an uneven surface with eyes closed
• Repeat challenge 1 but this time keep your eyes closed. • Close your eyes before lifting your leg up off the floor. • Slowly lift your leg, keeping it close to the floor until you feel confident enough to lift it higher.
Challenge 3: Squats into ankle extensions
• Take the bean bag away, you do not need it for this challenge. • Lift one leg up off the ground. • Perform a squat, bending your standing knee so your lifted leg becomes lower. • Straighten your standing leg and go straight into an ankle extension, lifting your standing heel. • Then lower the heel and go straight into a second squat. • The challenge is to complete 10 of these without losing your balance. • Try it on the other side. Is one side easier than the other?
Super challenge!
• The super challenge today is to try and do five one legged squats with your eyes closed! • Remember to do each squat slowly: this will help you to keep your balance. If you rush the movement, you are more likely to lose balance.

DT – Look at these pictures to help you make your own Elmer elephant from an empty milk bottle.
You will need:
1. An empty milk bottle 2. Some coloured paper
(There are coloured squares on the
next page if needed)
3. Glue (PVA glue will work better) 4. Scissors What to do:
1. Ask a grown up to help you to stand the milk bottle up and cut into it just below the handle. This will form the elephant’s trunk. Then cut off the entire bottom half of the bottle and cut four legs into it. Look at picture to help you.
2. Start sticking the square pieces of coloured paper on the milk bottle. Remember, the squares need to touch each other all the way around Elmer’s body. There should be no gaps.
3. Once you have finished sticking the coloured squares you can add another wash of glue over the top of your Elmer elephant to make it hard and shiny after it dries. Finally add the ears and the eyes and your Elmer elephant is complete.
