Work experience
What is work experience?
• Work Experience is the short term placement of secondary school students with employers, to provide insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located.
• Students are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require extensive training or experience.
PurposeWork Experience is preparation for life after school and gives you
insight into the world of work and career opportunities; it is aimed at
providing you with:
• An opportunity to observe first-hand a job that interests you
• An improved understanding of the world of work
• Increased self-awareness, especially your strengths and abilities
in relation to the workplace
• Strategies in learning to cope with new situations and new people
• A chance to identify skills and competencies that are required in
the workplace, and observe how these relate to your school
subjects.
Suitable placements
• The student, their parents/guardian and school must be satisfied that
the Work Experience environment is safe and secure
• Students considering a placement that involves contact with animals
must contact the Careers Office before they arrange their placement
• The Work Experience supervisor should not be a close family member
• Work Experience should cover new work experiences
• Work Experience arrangements conform to government regulations and
guidelines. To find out more about this, information can be obtained
from: http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/voced/workexp/index.htm
What will you be doing during Work Experience?
• Each student will have different opportunities during Work Experience
• For some, the week may involve observation only
• Other students may have the opportunity to be directly involved at
work
• Think carefully about your choice of employer and be realistic about
what kind of work you are able to do during your placement
Key Competencies and Skills
• Locate information
• Communicate effectively
• Organise and plan your
work activities
• Interact effectively
• Use mathematical ideas
