Transcript
What to expect in Year 10
The transition from Year 9 to Year 10 may be difficult for both students and parents. The recent
move to linear exams has resulted in an increase of informal assessments throughout the year. It is
also the year were a lot of subjects get students to complete controlled assessment which is often
worth at least 25% of their GCSE grade, with limited availability to re-sit. The purpose of this booklet
is to try and support parents and students by providing information that will enable you to clearly
understand the demands of Year 10.
The content of this booklet are:

Please be aware that the dates are a guide. Depending on the needs of the class the teacher
may accelerate through the programme or spend longer on topics to ensure a complete
understanding.

English Language and English Literature

Autumn term
Students will study Poetry since 1789 – poems from the „Conflict cluster of poems in the Edexcel poetry anthology. This is in preparation for Section B of the GCSE English Literature Paper 2 examination (formally assessed at the end of Year 11). They will also study some 19th Century Fiction texts as part of their preparation for Section A of the GCSE English Language Paper 1 examination (formally assessed at the end of Year 11). In addition, students will begin to study Charles Dickens „A Christmas Carol in preparation for Section A of the GCSE English Literature Paper 2 examination on a 19th Century Novel (formally assessed at the end of Year 11). Alongside this students will also do some imaginative narrative writing in preparation for Section B of the GCSE English Language Paper 1 examination (formally assessed at the end of Year 11).

Spring term

Unit 4: Allons-y (Customer Services and Transactions) Unit 5: Là où j’habite The focus for this term is listening and reading skills and vocabulary learning in the context of customer services and where I live. Y10 French will sit a listening and reading mock examination at the end of the year during lesson time.

Geography
Autumn term
Students begin Y10 by studying topics which help with Units 1 and 2 of the Geography GCSE. These two exams make up 50% of students final grade but the majority of the content which must be taught, learned and revised. Students start with Population Dynamics (Unit 2) then complete Battle for the Biosphere (Unit 1) and Consuming Resources (unit 2)
At the end of each sub-topic students will complete a timed question from the section of a recent exam which relates to this topic. These marks will be recorded on the marksheet at the front of students exercise books.
Spring term
Students continue learning the content for units 1 and 2. They will next complete the topic „Extreme Environments (Unit 1), followed by „Challenges of an Urban World (Unit 2) then River Processes and Pressures (Unit 1).
At the end of each sub-topic students will complete a timed question from the section of a recent exam which relates to this topic. These marks will be recorded on the marksheet at the front of students exercise books.
Summer term
Students will complete one more topic – Development Dilemmas (Unit 2) before moving back onto Rivers to prepare for the controlled assessment. Each class will complete their river study fieldwork to the Cheviots where they will record measurements on the river Coquet and then return to class and begin the process of writing up their results under a mixture of high and low controlled settings.
At the end of Development Dilemmas there will be a timed test. The rest of the term will be given to completing the controlled assessment. The first three sections (introduction, methodology and data presentation) are done in class and using ICT facilities and are classed as low control as some teacher input is allowed and required. The last two sections are done in exam conditions and these will be completed at the start of Year 11.

In Year 10 students will work through the „Life Issues Unit of the GCSE which will take the whole of the year. Within this unit they will study six topics, the first of which is Religion and Prejudice and the second is Religion and Young People.
In the exam students will complete a one and a half hour paper on 4 of the 6 topics. To enable students to practice exam technique and revise the content they have learned, students will practice 5 and 6 mark exam questions as they work through each unit. There will also be a chance to complete a full exam section at the end of each unit. All of these questions will be STAR marked.
