VCEYear11atVermontSecondaryCollegeYou have just started one of the two most significant years in your secondary education and made the choice of completing VCE at the end of 2021. The choice that you have made will shape you and guide you in the next two years, but most importantly for your life beyond Vermont Secondary College. The short and long-term goals that you set for yourself will determine your achievements in your road to success. Success is a very personal measurement and it can appear under many shapes and flavours, but most importantly it is for you to be pleased with in the end. The VCE studies require commitment, dedication and resilience. It is a step up from Year 10. Year 11 studies will require you to study every night for around 2 hours and to complete work over the weekend. One of the keys to success is a dedicated and a well-organised approach to studies with the right balance between subject studies, co-curricular activities and outside school activities. Attendance is a paramount part to your success. Any missing classes will impact negatively on your achievement. Wherever possible, minimise days of absence: you are required to attend 90% of the scheduled class time for the satisfactory completion of a unit.

As a Year 11student, you are expected to take responsibility for your own learning and to take advantage of the school resources made available to you, such as actively seeking help when required from Teachers, House and Wellbeing Teams. All the best in your VCE endeavour!

Attendance VSC policy stipulates that students enrolled in Year 11 have a requirement of 90% attendance in their timetabled classes. As for previous years, students are expected to be at school by 8:30am. In case of a teacher’s absence, they are allowed to leave school after their last scheduled class. Students need to sign out at the office when leaving school prior to 3:09.

In case of a student’s involvement in school-based activities, which lead to absenteeism from classes, the student is requested to discuss their absence with their SMs prior to the planned activity day/s.

SMs need to be informed ASAP in case a student will be away for a scheduled SAC due to illness. The failure to provide a medical certificate when a student misses a school-assessed coursework will result in an N in the assessment.

Students who miss assessment tasks due to illness or absence on college approved activities must obtain and complete the appropriate ‘extension of time / rescheduling of task’ pro-forma from their Student Manager. All VCE units involve at least 50 hours of scheduled classroom instruction. If a student has completed work but there has been a substantial breach of attendance rules, the school may need to assign an N for one or more outcomes and thus the unit will be an N. Year 11 students are not allowed to leave the school grounds during the day if they have a study period.

CompliancewithAssessmentProtocolsStudents must also comply with the rules and instructions relating to the conduct of the VCE assessment program. This includes school and VCAA rules relating to assessment and exams. In practice at VSC, this requires students to: ● not communicate with other students during an assessment and not bring

prohibited materials into a testing room. ● submit or undertake SACs on the specified date. ● adhere to all deadlines. In 2020, end of Unit 1 is the 12th June and end of Unit

2 is the 13th November.

§ BreachofrulesAny breach of rules will be treated in line with VCAA guidelines http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ If it is alleged that a student has breached VCAA examination rules or school-based assessment authentication rules, the Senior Learning and Teaching Team and the Head of VCE will investigate the allegation. One member of the Senior Learning and Teaching Team, the Head of Senior School Compliance and a member of the House Team in a support role will interview the student. Consequences for breaching rules could extend to a warning issued to the student, to a resubmission of work or a N award.

§ AppealProceduresStudents have the right of appeal to the college on decisions about ● Non-satisfactory completion of a unit ● Special Provision ● Breach of Rules ● Provisional school-assessed scores Appeals must be lodged in writing to the principal within 14 days of receiving the decision. An appeal committee, convened by the Head of VCE Compliance, will consider all records relating to the case and may interview the student. Where an interview is to be held, 24 hours’ notice will be given. Students have the right to appeal to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority against penalties imposed for breaches of rules. There is no provision for appeals against final grades awarded by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Graded Assessment tasks.

§ SatisfactoryCompletionofVCEUnitsFor satisfactory completion of a Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) unit, students must demonstrate their achievement on the set outcomes as specified in the study design. The decision about satisfactory completion of outcomes is based on the teacher’s judgment on the student’s overall performance on a combination of set work and assessment tools related to the outcomes. The assessment of levels of achievement is separate from the decision to award an S for satisfactory completion of a unit. VCE unit results (S or N) contribute to satisfactory completion of the certificate. This information is reported to the VCAA.

Page 8: Year 11 Student Handbook Final - vermontsc.vic.edu.au€¦ · INTEGRITY-RESPECT-EXCELLENCE 5 2020 Key Dates for Year 11 Students Term 1 March VASS VCE Enrolment Thursday 19th March

§ SatisfactoryVCEunitresultThe student will receive an S (satisfactory) for a unit if the teacher determines that the student has:

● produced work that demonstrates achievement of the outcomes. ● submitted work that is clearly their own.

§ NotSatisfactoryVCEunitresultThe student will receive an N (not satisfactory) for the unit when one or more of following occurs: ● the work does not demonstrate achievement of the outcomes. ● the student has failed to meet a deadline for the assessment task, including if

an extension of time has been granted for any reason, including Special Provisions.

● the work cannot be authenticated, for example through lack of attendance. ● there has been a substantial breach or rules.

§ Potentialnon-achievementofanoutcome

● When a VCE student is in danger of not achieving an outcome in a particular study, parents will be informed via the ‘Potential non-achievement of an outcome’ pro-forma.

● This pro-forma will include advice on the action that must be taken by the student to redress the situation.

§ Redeemingoutcomes-submittingfurtherevidencefor

satisfactorycompletionIn most cases, if students satisfactorily complete all work requirements set by their teacher prior to undertaking a SAC, they will have already achieved an S for the outcome. The SAC determines a student’s internal score; however, a low performance in the assessment cannot nullify an S that has already been attained. If in the judgment of the teacher, work submitted by a student does not meet the required standard for satisfactory completion, the teacher may consider other work relating to outcomes undertaken and submitted by the student for the unit. Where a student has not achieved an S on a SAC and has not satisfactorily completed the work requirements, they will be granted one further opportunity to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge.

ExamsYear 11 exams take place at the end of each semester. The exam mark will be listed on the student’s report for cycles 2 and 4. An exam’s result might be helpful for a student to achieve a satisfactory completion of a unit, in case of a potential of non-achievement in an outcome. Exams are compulsory and students are required to sit the whole allocated period of time for each exam.

ExpectationsVCE students are required to adhere to the particular conditions laid down in the Conditions of Enrolment, which must be signed by all students entering Year 11 and endorsed by a parent/guardian. All VCE students are expected to be positive role models for the college community. VCE students taking VET programs with other providers do so as representatives of Vermont Secondary College and are expected to present a positive image at all times.

ExtensionofTimeAn extension of time for all students in a particular class to complete an assessment task may be granted under certain circumstances such as teacher illness. Such an extension is given on condition that all students are given adequate notice and no one in the class or another class is advantaged or disadvantaged by the change.

Extensions of time for individual students can only be granted in special circumstances. Students wishing to apply for an extension of time must provide appropriate supporting documentation to the Student Manager and complete the appropriate pro-forma. If a student is granted an extension of time, the reschedule of the SAC must take place within the next 5 school days after the original SAC date. School based special provisions will be implemented if a student is away due to illness longer than 5 school days after the original SAC date.

SAC reschedules will take place on Monday after school and on Wednesday period 3 only. Students will be reminded of their SAC reschedule with an entry in their chronicle on Compass. Students need to make themselves available on these days to sit their SACs.

NB: Family holidays are not considered a valid reason for an extension of time. Any student who misses a SAC due to a holiday or unapproved absence will receive a “0” as a score.

IndividualCareerCounsellingStudents will be booked for an interview with one of the career counsellors in Term 2 to help to look at pathways options for 2021 and beyond.

§ Career’sCentreThe Director of Pathways will provide students with information on tertiary entrance requirements, tertiary courses, and applications to tertiary institutions. Advice on course planning, employment opportunities and job application skills is also available. Students should regularly check the Pathways noticeboards.

InductionBookletsStudents have been provided an Induction Booklet by their subject teacher. This important documentation outlines the requirements of the subject based on the study design. It includes a description of the SACs assessments. Students should refer to their induction booklet throughout the year and may also refer to the VCAA website to access the study design in each of their subjects: https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/curriculum/vce/vce-study-designs/Pages/vce-study-designs.aspx

LevelsofperformanceIn all Unit 1 and 2 studies, levels of performance on assessment tasks will be reported on the 11-point scale: A+, A, B+, …………, E. Work that does not meet the standard required for the award of a grade will be given a UG. Work that is submitted late or completed solely for the purpose of achieving an outcome will not be given a level of performance and will be reported as NA. Work not submitted even though the student was present during the period of the assessment task will be reported as NS. Work not submitted because the student had an approved absence during the period of the assessment task (generally due to chronic illness) will be reported as NP.

Non-submissionofwork/AccountabilitysessionsThe college has introduced support program to help VCE students stay organised and on top of their work. Students who have failed to hand in work by a due date will have their parents notified and be required to attend an accountability session.

Page 11: Year 11 Student Handbook Final - vermontsc.vic.edu.au€¦ · INTEGRITY-RESPECT-EXCELLENCE 5 2020 Key Dates for Year 11 Students Term 1 March VASS VCE Enrolment Thursday 19th March

The ‘Accountability Program’ will run on Wednesday periods 3 and 4 in N26 and is supervised by teachers. The student will use the time in the session to undertake the work that is outstanding. Rolls will be taken and non-attendance will be reported to SM/HOH. The accountability sessions will be scheduled around student SACs that are scheduled for Wednesdays.

NumberofVCESubjectsIt is expected that every Year 11 student complete six subjects in Year 11. These subjects might include VCE VET, External languages and Virtual School subjects. Year 12 students are required to do 5 subjects regardless of the number of Units 3&4 completed in Year 11. Variations from this expectation will be considered where a student is eligible for Special Provisions due to medical reason or the student’s involvement in National or International high-level sporting or other commitment. The House Team, Wellbeing Team and Head of VCE Compliance will jointly decide on the granting of a subject load reduction.

SchoolAssessedCoursework(SAC)SACs are tasks set by teachers and marked within VCAA guidelines to assess students’ achievement of Unit 1 and 2 outcomes.

School-basedSpecialProvisionsStudents are eligible for Special Provision for classroom learning and school-based assessment if their ability to demonstrate achievement is adversely affected by:

● an acute or chronic illness ● a long-term impairment or disability ● personal circumstances. The SMs will be the first point of contact for the students regarding the application for school-based special provisions.

Page 12: Year 11 Student Handbook Final - vermontsc.vic.edu.au€¦ · INTEGRITY-RESPECT-EXCELLENCE 5 2020 Key Dates for Year 11 Students Term 1 March VASS VCE Enrolment Thursday 19th March

§ AssistanceStrategies are employed to optimise the conditions under which a student may undertake their VCE studies. Students may be granted forms of special provision, which will allow them to fully demonstrate what they know and can do. Strategies may include:

• the flexibility of the VCE • provision of facilities and technology • assistance from aides • re-scheduling of an assessment task • extra time to complete required work for unit completion or school-assessed

coursework The House team will decide on whether to approve special provisions for classroom learning and/or school-based assessment. School-based special provisions must provide evidence and use a range of appropriate sources including professional testing and reports, educational assessments and teacher observations.

StudyPeriodsinSeniorStudyCenterDuring the students’ study periods as scheduled in their timetable or due to a teacher’s absence, students are expected to use this time wisely to focus on their studies. The study center is a place for collaborative work with an acceptable level of noise, which allows every student to be able to study. Every Year 11 student is responsible for the tidiness of the Senior Study Center.

VASSEnrolmentDetailsStudents must read all VCAA VCE enrolment documentation and check the accuracy details before signing and returning them to the VASS coordinator.

Students must communicate to the VASS administrator any changes to their enrolments such as enrolment in studies offered by outside providers, change of address, etc.

WellbeingAs with any year of high school, but especially during the stress of VCE years, difficult situations may arise or concerns with your mental health may emerge. It is important that you seek support to help cope with these challenges. Healthy coping strategies are different for everyone and accessing support to help develop these strategies is crucial. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can access Wellbeing support through your Student Manager, by visiting us in Wellbeing or by sending us an email at [email protected]

VictorianCurriculumandAssessmentAuthority(VCAA)is a statutory authority of the Government of Victoria, responsible for the provision of curriculum and assessment programs for students in Victoria. Rules relating to VCE are set by VCAA and can be consulted under: https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/HomePage.aspx

CompletionofVCEThe minimum requirement for the award of the VCE is the satisfactory completion of 16 units (semester length subjects), which must include: • at least three units from the English group (English, Literature, EAL or English

Language). NB: If a student receives an N in more than one English unit, they will not be eligible for VCE.

• at least three sequences of Units 3 and 4 studies, other than English, including VCE VET sequences.

For the calculation of a student’s ATAR by VTAC, satisfactory completion of both Units 3 and 4 of an English study is required. N.B. The vast majority of students completing their VCE will have taken 22 or 24 units.

EAL–EnglishasanAdditionalLanguageA student is eligible for EAL status if:

1. They have been a resident in Australia for no more than seven calendar years immediately prior to 1 January of the year in which the study is undertaken at Units 3 and 4 (for students in 2021, that means 1 January 2014), and

Page 14: Year 11 Student Handbook Final - vermontsc.vic.edu.au€¦ · INTEGRITY-RESPECT-EXCELLENCE 5 2020 Key Dates for Year 11 Students Term 1 March VASS VCE Enrolment Thursday 19th March

14

2. English has been the student’s major language of instruction for a total period of not more than seven years prior to the year in which the study is being undertaken at Units 3 and 4.

Students who have resided in Singapore and India need to apply to VCAA with supporting school documentation and passport stamp or International Movement records.

If both these conditions are met, the student will be granted EAL status. This provision is also available for Aboriginal students whose first language is not English and who meet Criterion 2 above. Approved students will have the statement ‘This student was granted EAL status in 2021 printed on their official results. Students with EAL status may enrol in English EAL Units 3 and 4. Students granted EAL status may apply for an extension of time for the completion of tasks to assess learning outcomes. This is not automatic, students must apply through their student manager and each case will be assessed individually.

RulesofAuthenticationofschool-basedassessmentThe Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority sets down rules, which a student must observe when preparing work for assessments. These rules apply to school-assessed coursework and school-assessed tasks. They are: • A student must ensure that all unacknowledged work submitted for assessment

is genuinely her or his own. • A student must acknowledge all resources used, including:

- text, websites and source material - the name(s) and status of any person(s) who provided assistance and the type of assistance provided.

• A student must not receive undue assistance from any other person in the preparation and submission of work.

• Acceptable levels of assistance include: - the incorporation of ideas or material derived from other sources (e.g. by reading, viewing or note taking) but which has been transformed by the student and used in a new context. - prompting and general advice from another person or source, which leads to refinements and/or self-correction.

• Unacceptable forms of assistance include:

- use of, or copying of, another person’s work or other resources without acknowledgment. - corrections or improvements made or dictated by another person.

• A student must not submit the same piece of work for assessment in more than one study, or more than once within a study.

• A student must not circulate or publish written work that is being submitted for assessment in a study in the academic year of enrolment.

• A student who knowingly assists other students in a breach of rules may be penalised.

• A student must sign a declaration of authenticity for work done outside class at the time of submitting the completed task. This declaration states that all unacknowledged work is the student’s own.

• A student must sign a general declaration that he or she will obey the rules and instructions for the VCE, and accept its disciplinary provisions.

VCECertificate The certificate presented, by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, to students who satisfy the minimum requirements for the completion of the VCE. VCE certificates are sent to the college the day after the publication of final results for Units 3 and 4.

VCEVETStudents will receive an S for a unit of competency if they have been assessed as competent for the unit. The final assessment decision is made by their registered training organisation.

Some VCE VET subjects can either contribute directly to the ATAR score or as a 10% increment (5th or 6th subject), depending on the subjects chosen.

Year11studentscompletingUnits3&4

ExaminationsUnit 3 and 4 examinations are held in October/November and are externally set and marked.

The timetable and approved materials and equipment for examinations of Unit 3 and 4 examinations is mandated by the Victorian Curriculum and is published by VCAA in early Term 2.

GAT(GeneralAchievementTest)All students studying at least one Unit 3 and 4 VCE study (or scored VCE VET study) must sit the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Wednesday 10th June 2020. The test is 3 hours long. The GAT measures the student’s general knowledge and skills in written communication, mathematics, science, technology, humanities, the arts and social sciences. Although the results do not count directly towards the student’s VCE results, they are used in statistical moderation of school-based assessments and in checking the accuracy of student scores in examinations. The GAT may also be used to determine Derived Examination Scores for students who are ill or affected by other personal circumstances at the time of a VCE external assessment and whose result is unlikely to be a fair or accurate indication of their learning or achievement.

You can access previous GAT assessments in the link below, it will give you some overview of what to expect for the GAT examination. https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/assessment/vce-assessment/general-achievement-test/pastGAT/Pages/index.aspx

A confidential statement of GAT results is sent to each student at the end of the year.

PracticeExamsUnit 3 & 4 exams are scheduled in the second week of the September break. Practice exams are compulsory for Year 12 students and for Year 11 students enrolled in a Unit 3 & 4 subject. The practice exams assist students and teachers in providing vital feedback for the revision and preparation for the VCAA exams.

RawStudyScoreUnit 3 and 4 VCE raw study scores show how students performed in a subject, or study, relative to all other students doing that same subject. The maximum raw study score is 50. Each year, and for every study, the state-wide average raw study score is set at 30. A score between 23 and 37 means that a student is in the middle range; a score of 38 or more indicates that a student is in the top 15% of students; and a score over 45 is given to the top 2% of students in the state.

DerivedExaminationScore(DES)A Derived Examination Score is intended for the student who is ill or affected by other personal circumstance at the time of an examination and whose examination result is unlikely to be a fair or accurate indication of their learning in the study. A DES is calculated by VCAA and may be used as the student’s examination result where the student has met the eligibility requirements for this provision.

A student is eligible for a Derived Examination Score if they can demonstrate that at the time of the examination, or in the period just prior to the examination, the student has experienced circumstances that:

• prevented the student performing on the examination at a level that accurately reflects his/her real achievement in the study, or

• prevented the student from sitting the examination

Students who believe that they are eligible for a DES should first seek advice from the Head of Senior School Compliance. The primary responsibility for submitting an application that meets all eligibility criteria rests with the student. VCAA will determine the student’s eligibility for a DES from the supporting evidence supplied by the student.

SchoolAssessedTasks(SATs)SATs are Unit 3 and 4 school-based assessments that are part of Graded Assessment in Art, Design and Technology, Media, Studio Arts, Software Development and Visual Communication & Design. SATs are extended pieces of work undertaken in and out of class. They are set by VCAA and assessed by teachers using VCAA criteria. Task grades are subject to review by a panel appointed by VCAA.

SpecialExaminationArrangementsFor Special Examination Arrangements and DES applications, VCAA is responsible for determining eligibility and for granting approval. The Head of Senior School VCE is responsible for making an application to VCAA on behalf of the student.

StatisticalmoderationStatistical moderation is a process undertaken by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority to ensure comparability of school-assessed coursework assessments between different schools. In Unit 3 and 4 VCE studies, teachers have some flexibility in choosing coursework assessment tasks they use to assess the learning outcomes specified for each study. Consequently, in some cases the tasks set in one school may be harder or easier than those set in another school. Also, the marking of tasks in one school may be stricter or more generous than in another school. Because of the possible variations between schools, statistical moderation is used to ensure schools’ assessments are comparable across all schools within the state. Statistical moderation is a process for adjusting the level and spread of each school’s assessments of its students in a particular study, to match the level and spread of the same students’ scores on a common external examination and relevant parts of the GAT.

StudyScoreScalingStudy scores are adjusted or “scaled” to provide an overall measure of the performance of all students across all studies. This determines the degree of difficulty of subjects and results in the study scores of some subjects being increased or decreased. Scaled study scores are used to calculate an ATAR.
