YEAR 13 OVERVIEW: AQA CLASSICAL CIVILISATION

In AS Classical Civilisation the pupils will study two topics which will run concurrently

throughout the year.

Topic AWomen in Athens and Rome

This topic requires a critical study of freeborn women in Athens in the fifth and fourth

centuries BC and in Rome in the second and first centuries BC and the first and early second

centuries AD, and the values and attitudes implicit in the position and treatment of women

in each society.

The pupils will study the following texts in the course of the AS year:

Womens’ Life in Greece and Rome, M. R. Lefkowitz and M. B. Grant

Aristophanes, Women at the Thesmophoria

They will explore the following themes:

The legal status and roles of freeborn women in public and private life in Athens and

Rome during the periods specified.

Women’s participation in religion and the reason why they were assigned these

roles.

The values and attitudes implicit in the position and treatment of women in each

society.

The structure of the ploy of Women at the Thesmophoria, themes, characterisation,

use of the chorus, comic techniques and targets.

The nature of the prescribed texts and problems in their use as evidence for the

position and treatment of women.

These topics cannot be isolated from each other but will emerge in parallel through careful

reading of the material studied.

Throughout the course pupils will be given:

Regular short oral quizzes and written tests on basic factual information

Shorter exercises in the analysis and evaluation of key texts and passages to prepare

for the 10 mark questions

Longer analytical and evaluative essays on the key themes to prepare for the 20 and

30 mark questions
