The brief asked for 6-8 dwellings to accommodate a mixture of families. The typical family house needed to be the predominant typology of the scheme. As an additional feature, the scheme needed to include a secondary typology to accommodate smaller domestic groups. An attitude to the city of York was to be developed and demonstrated through the scheme.
The proposed scheme promotes a communal lifestyle, by providing layered spaces of different privacy levels. Contrasting the rigidity of traditional terraced houses, the scheme offers an interlocking layout for flexibility and opportunities for interactions. The communal gardens create an informal back street providing links between residents.

The brief specified the design of a building to accommodate the storage and maintenance of 4 microlights, as well as small scale accommodation for 2 people and a waiting area for visitors. As a theoretical framework was the notion of “threshold” at the rural site. The theme was to be perceived and interpreted through the design.
The building respects and is restrained by the threshold. It aims to intensify the drama and surprise of the path leading to the edge.

In an urban context, we were required to design a small commercial building (kiosk) to facilitate the storage, sale and service of a product (crepes) by a single person.
The final design is multi-functional and becomes a sculptural feature of the site. Its form refers to the site’s dynamism.
