Great Wood Home Learning Recommendations
Year 3 April 27th – May 1st 2020
Hello again 3H and 3HR – Here is your new set of learning recommendations for the coming week. We hope you are continuing to stay safe and
we can see that you have been really busy this week with loads of different activities. Thank you to all those who have emailed us their work - it
really brightens our day to see what you have been doing and we unfortunately don’t have space to mention you all! Thank you to Leyton, Oliver,
Connie and Lucas in 3HR for your fantastic vocabulary work. We particularly enjoyed reading the Twits top trump cards you made. Thank you
also to Ava and Amelia in 3HR for your brilliant drawings and descriptive language you used to describe Mr and Mrs Twit. In 3H, thank you to
Charlotte, Georgia and Callum for your lovely vocab work. Well done Jessica V and Oliver S for sending in some terrific writing on the Twits.
We have been so impressed with the work that has been going on in science. You are all becoming terrific young scientists, especially Jacob F in
3HR who made some excellent observations on shadows and Layton K and Amy R in 3H who created incredibly realistic shadow puppets and
silhouettes.
Just a little reminder for 3HR - please email your work to [email protected]. Please note, this is for 3HR only. If you are in Mr
Hudson’s class, please send work to [email protected]. Thank you.
Below is a suggested timetable for your home learning this week. Don’t worry if you don’t stick to it or don’t get everything done; they are just
recommendations for things you could do. Look at your daily pages below for more details about the activities each day.

Maths – This week’s congratulations go to Alfie L, Callum and Amy (3H) and Gabby, George Ho and Amelia (3HR) for being the most active
pupils from each class on TT Rockstars during the past week and also a huge well done to our current Studio Speed class leaders on their
second week at the top – Archie (3H) and George Ho (3HR). There are lots of children hot on their tails so keep practising those times tables and
try setting a new personal Studio Speed record this week. A few minutes of tables practice each day is really useful and this can be done in
many different ways - check your home learning pack for some other ideas.
Our focus for Maths this week is Addition. Each day we will have a suggested activity or activities on IXL and may have an additional activity
linked to addition. Think about the different addition strategies we have learnt in school and decide which strategy might work best for the
calculation, activity or problem you are doing. Remember our Great Wood Maths Mantra and, for each question, ask yourself:
1) Do I know the answer?
2) Can I work it out in my head?
3) Do I need to do a jotting?
4) Do I need to use a written method?
Remember to start at 1) and work down to find the most appropriate way to solve the calculation. Can you spot any patterns or links that might
help you, e.g. number bonds or related facts? What kind of jotting or written method will you use? Does the answer match the problem?
On your IXL homepage, you may have noticed a ‘Diagnostic’ tab at the top as well as a
‘Recommendations’ section when you first log in (this is different from the ‘skills suggested by your
teachers’ link). We will be starting to use these sections more over the coming weeks, so you could
start to explore these areas of IXL this week by answering a few of the questions and ‘stepping into
the arena’! Please see the attached information sheet for a guide on how to use them.
English – This week is all about eggs! Eggs-plore some stories, recipes, songs and poems. We think you will really enjoy this week's work and
we are egg-cited to see what you create!
Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling – Our focus is on verbs this week. Remember, verbs are actions or “doing” words. Your Top Tip this
week is to read the sentence out loud to identify the verb.
Each day there will be suggested activities on IXL. We also recommend that you continue to look at the Year 3 spelling list we sent home in the
learning packs and continue to practise these at home using the suggested strategies.
Science – We are continuing our work on light this week. We have been very impressed by your light posters and all the information you have
found.
Music – This week’s music lesson is based around journeys and the song ‘The Little Train of Caipira’. Visit the BBC Ten Pieces website for more
details: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/ten-pieces/watch-this-do-this-weekly-activities/zjy3382
Ukulele Club - If you are in Ukulele club, visit https://www.greatwood.lancs.sch.uk/ukulele-club/ for your log in details to Charanga Music World.
This will provide you with some songs to practice and is the same website we used when we were in school.
Please don’t log in as anyone else and get in touch if you need help.

This week, we would really like to see everyone send a picture of their recipe and even better if you make it! You can also send us pictures or
information about anything else you have been working on too if you like. Ask your parents to help or do it by yourself. Remember, for 3HR,
please send your email to [email protected]. This is only for 3HR. Anyone in Mr Hudson’s class should send work to
Great Wood is providing you with options and choices to promote learning but does not wish to put undue pressure on children and families at this time. What is
recommended will consolidate areas that the children have already covered and when we return to school teachers will make sure all gaps in learning are filled. Please
contact your child’s teacher by email if you have questions.
Dojo Points and Star of the Week
We will be using ClassDojo to award Dojo points to celebrate success in your home learning. You can earn Dojo points for a variety of things,
such as accessing IXL and TT Rockstars, reading, sending examples of work to us, or emailing to tell us what you’ve been doing. You can also
earn extra points depending on how much you do on IXL and TT Rockstars. We will also be awarding a ‘Star of the Week’ from each class with 5
Dojo points each week.
Congratulations to our Stars of the Week this week!
Gabby (3HR) has been working really hard this week and sent us some fabulous
pictures of his work, including stories, grammar work and some amazing sewing.
Sofia T (3H) Has been super creative this week and sent us pictures of tie-dye
clothes, her rock bag and some brilliant hand-writing information leaflets about
whales and the musical ‘Cats’.
Here are the Dojo points awarded this week to the children in 3HR and 3H. 3HR collected 209 points and 3H collected 178 points. Let’s see
which class can collect the most next week!

outside and place them on a
sheet on paper. Using a pencil
or felt tip draw around the
outline of the shadow on the
paper. Why are the toys
creating a shadow? (they are
blocking the light)
Throughout the day put the
toys back and observe the
shadows. Do the shadows stay
the same? How do they
change? Are the shadows
larger, the same size or smaller
than the toys? When you rotate
the toys, what happens to the
shadows?
Write a paragraph about what
you have found out. You could
write this on the same page as
your shadow drawings to make
a poster.

Go through the PowerPoint on sun safety. We can see in many windows around school you have drawn some fantastic rainbows. We would like to draw another rainbow using felt tips or coloured card. Cover a section of the rainbow with black card (this could be a cereal box). Don’t glue it as it is to be removed later, you could use blue tac or staples. Stick your poster in the window which gets the most light. After a week or so remove the card from a section of your rainbow. What has happened to the colour of your rainbow? What has happened to the colour which has been covered? Can you see the effects of UV light?
