Monday – Science

L.O. To explore how seeds are dispersed.

What can you remember from last week?

Have a look at this activity on the computer if you can (Parts 1 and 2). Watch the animations and see if you can select the correct words.

http://resources.hwb.wales.gov.uk/VTC/plant_life_cycles/eng/Introduct/mains.htm

If you can’t do this online, the activity is shown on this slide. If you need them, the answers are

at the end of this PowerPoint.

Monday – Science

L.O. To explore how seeds are dispersed.

Today we are going to look at the different ways that a plant can disperse its seeds. This is the last part of the life cycle before it begins again, as the new seeds germinate in a new place.

Have a look at the video. What different methods of seed dispersal can you spot?

https://vimeo.com/218127343

Watch this seed song video to find out more!

Sycamore ‘helicopters’ and dandelion

‘clocks’ both have fruits which have

adapted to use the wind to carry the seeds

away when the seeds are ready.

Wind - shakers

Some plants rely on being shaken to disperse

their seeds. When poppies have produced their

seeds and have finished flowering all that is

left is a long stem with a dried seed pod. These

pods have small holes at the top and rely on wind

to shake them to scatter the seeds. This method

doesn’t send the seeds very far. Yucca Campestris

seeds also need to be shaken.

Explosion

Some plants have pods full of seeds which

will burst, showering the ground with seeds,

like the Himalayan Balsam seed. Peas are

another example of a plant bursting open to

disperse its seeds.

Water

Some plants rely on water to disperse their fruits. These will

either grow on the water or by the side of water.

Water lilies live on the water so they use the water to disperse

their seeds. They make very light seeds which will float away on

the water for a while, then sink to the bottom of a pond to grow

a new lily.

Palm tree seeds are very

grow by the oceans drop

their seeds which can be

swept great distances by the

ocean’s currents. Coconuts

are well known travellers.

Willow and silver

birch trees often grow

near water.

Their seeds are very

light which enables

them to float

away on water (the

silver birch seed is

also fluffy which

helps them to be

dispersed by the wind

too).

Animals - Catching a Ride

Some plants such as cockleburs have

developed to grow tiny hooks on their fruits

which hook on to animals (or people) that

pass by the plant. Eventually they will

drop off on to the ground.

Animals - Seeds as Food

Some plants make tasty fruits. This is to

encourage animals (and people!) to eat the

fruits. The seeds then pass through the

animal unharmed and out the other end with a

ready supply of fertiliser! This method

ensures the seed is given nutrients to help

it grow.

What types of fruits

can you think of that

are eaten by animals

and people with seeds

inside?

Drop and Roll!

Some fruits, such as horse chestnuts, have a

casing round them which cracks open when it

hits the ground. The fruit inside then rolls

away from the tree. You can tell which

horse chestnuts in the trees are ripe

because their casings have already begun to

split open before they drop.

Have a look at these plants from Mrs Ward’s walk.

Do you recognise them?

There are some acorns from an oak tree, berries from a holly bush and lots of dandelions!

How do you think these plants might disperse their seeds?

Have a go at your own seed hunt on your next walk. Just make sure to wash your hands thoroughly if you touch any of the seeds

Your task:In your book, split your page into 6 and label each box with the following headings -WindEaten by animalsWaterExplodingCatching a liftDrop and roll

Meet it: Cut and stick the seeds into the correct box or draw and label your own picture. Beat it: Include some your own examples.Smash it: Add a sentence to explain which method you think would carry the seed furthest from the parent plant.

The answers are at the end of this PowerPoint.

What is the difference between weather and climate?

Weather is the day to day changes that we see happen. So, it can be sunny one day and rainy the next.

Climate is the average weather usually taken over 30 years for a particular place.

Countries have different types of ‘climate’ around the world; they can be hot or cold.

Climate ZonesTuesday – TopicL.O. To compare the climate in Mexico and the UK.

Individual countries are part of climate zones. Large areas that have their own specific climate.

Tropical – Hot and wet all year round

Warm - Dry, hot summers and mild (warm) winters

Temperate – Cold winters and mild (warm) summers

Cold – Cold all year round

Mexico: Along the coast it is hot and humid, particularly in Summer. Inland communities are much dryer and more temperate. Mexico City, which is 2300 metres above sea level, can reach freezing temperatures in Winter.

United Kingdom: The UK has a temperate climate. This means that it gets cool, wet winters and warm, wet summers. It rarely features the extremes of heat or cold, drought or wind that are common in other climates.

What do you notice?

Mexico City, which is 2300 metres above sea level, can reach freezing temperatures in Winter. Other parts of Mexico can be hot and humid in the Summer.

This is why you might not notice a huge difference in the temperature here.

Graphs are often used to compare temperatures.

Tuesday – Topic L.O. To compare the climate in Mexico and the UK.

Your task today is to create a graph comparing the climate in Mexico and the UK. You can use the

temperatures I have given you or research and find your own information based on somewhere else in

Mexico.

You can:- Print and use the layout on the next slide

- Copy the layout on the next slide and draw it yourself on a plain or squared piece of paper

- Create a graph on the computer (instructions on another slide)

Extra Challenge: Could you create your own Maths questions about the graph? For example, ‘What is the

difference in temperature in July between Mexico City and London?’ and then include the answer.

Wednesday – Art L.O. To create an animal using a range of media.

In English, we have written a story, creating a different world from the old man’s rubbish. Your art task is to create a creature from your world. For example, you might create a fish from an underwater world or a cactus from a desert world. You can either draw or make your creature.

If you have any leftover recycling and your parent or guardian gives permission, you could create an animal from junk modelling.

We’d love to see your creations. [email protected]

Thursday – PE L.O. To explore a range of mindfulness activities.

Over the next few slides you will see a range of mindfulness activities for you to have a go at and try.

Extra Challenge: Do you have any other ideas of mindfulness activities? If you do, please email them to your teacher and perhaps we could share some of them with the rest of the year group.

Design your own Den!

We want you to have a go at designing your very own den.

You can choose the theme of your den, based on your own interests.

You might want to think about theming your den around:-

• Your favourite sport/game/hobby

• Your favourite book or film

• Your favourite animal

• Your favourite place/country

Page 33: Year 3 Home Learning Activities - Knaphill School · L.O. To compare the climate in Mexico and the UK. Your task today is to create a graph comparing the climate in Mexico and the

Some ideas!

You can choose whether your den is outside or inside.

You will need to think about how to decorate both the inside and outside of your den so that it is matches your chosen theme.

Make sure you annotate your design (include labels) to show:-+ colours+ contents+ materials

Draw your den design on a plain piece of paper- and make it as colourfulas you can!
