Preschool Paints Plows

We were excited to welcome many new friends and families to Toronto City Schools with the start of the new school year! Preschool has been a busy place and our preschoolers have adjusted well! Recently we worked with the Ohio Department of Transportation to “Paint a Plow.” This is an annual tradition for preschool! This plow will be featured in the Toronto Christmas parade and used to keep the highway clear of snow near Toronto this winter! The preschool students and staff along with preschool student Logan Troski and his dad Josh Troski worked hard to paint a beautiful winter theme- “There’s snowplace like Toronto.” Be sure to check it out this upcoming winter! Preschool has also worked to increase STEM activities in each classroom. Through planned play-doh and lego activities, students are gaining higher level thinking skills and increasing their creative problem solving skills! We also hosted our annual Preschool Fall Festival. This special occasion wraps up our SFA Unit “Fall Into Fall.” Students and their families were able to enjoy a fun day that included a hayride to a pumpkin field, face painting, sensory play, special snacks and crafts, and fun fall games. This fun day meets our 5 star program rating requirements and correlates directly with family involvement for Step Up to Quality.

The Kindergarten classes just finished an unit titled, “From Head to Toe.” They learned all about their bodies and the five senses. The students used a real stethoscope to listen to their hearts, learned about how their stomachs break down food, and examined real x-rays of their bones. One experiment that all the students loved was using their sense of taste and their sense of smell.
The students used their sense of smell to determine whether the mystery smell in the container had a good odor or a bad odor. The students would then record their findings on a data sheet. They then had to guess what the mystery object was and record it. The students had a great time smelling the different odors.
The other part of the experiment was a taste test. The students tasted different foods and had to determine if it had a salty, sweet, sour, or bitter taste. The students sampled pretzels, lollipops, lemon juice, and dark chocolate. The looks on their faces were priceless. The students used a data sheet for this also.
As a culminating activity, the students wrote in their journals which smell and taste were their favorites.
1st Grade News
We were so excited to extend a warm welcome to our new group of 1st grade students! After a recharging summer, the Class of 2030 made their way into their new classrooms. Our Red Knights of the future were excited to find out who was in their class, to meet their teacher, and begin a new learning adventure! Special visitors from The Pittsburgh Zoo invaded the Karaffa Elementary Gym in September. A sloth, lizard, and snake were used to teach us about the layers of the rainforest and proper nutrition. A special thank you to the cafeteria staff for setting up this thrilling experience for us! At the beginning of October, we participated in the ground breaking of the new wing for the elementary school addition. Students were able to dig a vial of dirt to keep for a souvenir. What an exciting time in TCSD!
Our second graders have been incorporating some fun STEM activities into their classroom each month. In September we learned about Sir Isaac Newton and Gravity. We read the Dr. Seuss book “Ten Apples up on Top”. We predicted how many apples we thought we could stack. The students were then given skewers, toothpicks, string, glue, and apples to build a tall structure with. Some groups did great and some could not get more than 2 apples stacked. For October we did a candy corn and candy pumpkin STEM activity. This was another cooperative construction building activity that the children did in a group. The students were given toothpicks, candy corn, and candy pumpkins. They could choose to build a tower or a 3D pumpkin. The pictures show some of the final projects. The kids had a blast trying to complete these challenges.

Third Grade Learning and Creating

In math the third grade students have been learning to solve multiplication problems by using their knowledge of drawing groups, making arrays and using repeated addition. We also have been learning all about shapes by comparing and contrasting their attributes. The students have created various projects to further their understanding of these math skills.
In science class the students have been learning about rocks and minerals. They have completed two different science experiments to explore rocks. The students created a model of a rock and then observed the rock. They also observed some rocks and described them.
Miss Horne’s third grade social studies class has been learning about different types of communities. They have made postcards, flyers, and journal entries to tell about the different benefits of living in Urban, Suburban, and Rural areas. They have used creativity and writing skills to show their knowledge of the different characteristics of these community types.

Fifth Grade Scientist
Our school year is off to an amazing start by incorporating STEM into our class! My science classes spent the day as engineers! They had to construct a the tallest and most sturdiest building that could withstand fierce winds!! Using either paper, legos, or blocks! Then, they measured the dimensions to see who had the tallest! As a class, we answered questions like what challenges might an engineer face in building a tall building? What makes a building slender? What unique challenges do we face in making a tower slender? The students worked collaboratively in groups of four, each tower was measured for height and width and we recorded the data in a classroom chart and compared the data. After each grouped was measured and tested with the wind, we evaluated each teams and offered feedback to the groups. The tallest buildings were not always the sturdiest!! .
This has been an exciting beginning to 4th Grade. In Science, students have frequently participated in STEM related activities. Students have become acquainted with the steps and uses of the Scientific Method during many lab
experiences and engineering builds. Recently, the Scientific Method was applied during the exploration of different habitats. The students were challenged with creating a “bug apartment” using recycled items. The purpose was to
create a habitat (observable bug box) for a cricket. After some detailed research, the cricket apartments were built! They then had to observe the cricket for 10 to 20 minutes. Next, the teams examined their
data and reflected at the end of the task to determine if they were successful. They answered such questions like, were there any problems with their structures? What they
would need to do to improve on their designs? And, had the insect(s) enjoyed their structure? Further activities in-
cluded making insect apartment adver- tisements to lure resi-dent crickets and researching and writ- ing a bug letter to their
teacher. The 4th graders are looking forward to many more fun and engaging learning challenges this year!

Mrs. Fisher is a 5th grade teacher that works hard to help students. She started out working from home. She was born in Toronto. Toronto is her favorite town. Her kids were also born in Toronto. Her kids are Chloe, Sydney and Riley. Mrs. Fisher is a kind and a caring teacher. We are proud to call her our 5th grade teacher. We are also proud to call her a Red Knight. She likes to teach any subject. She likes to have discussions about stories in reading. She also likes to do projects in social studies. She really likes being a teacher. She dreamt it since she was a kid. She teaches Reading,4th grade English Language arts,4th grade social studies,5th grade English Language arts,5th grade social studies, and even exercise classes in the local gym. She loved math when she was in school. She thinks this school is the best! And this is what she said “The students and staff are amazing. I went to Karaffa for 6th-8th grade. Mr. Fisher taught Science in the room that is currently my classroom. I am very happy to be able to teach in this school!”
