LOCATION: Maria Island is

located off the East coast of Tasmania. To access the Island you travel by ferry. There are no shops, running water or even hot water on the Island. The closest capital city is Hobart.

Maria Island KEY FEATURES: The entire

Island is a National Park consisting of wildlife such as wombats, wallabies, Forester kangaroos and Tasmanian Pademelons. There is pretty scenery including historic ruins, fossil cliffs, mountains and beautiful bays. Captain John Cox was the first Englishman to land on the Island in 1789 and he made contact with the local aborigines. Maria Island has wailers and sealers heritage.

NUMBER OF VISITOR PER YEAR: During summer and Easter holidays the average amount of tourists to the island is between 120 to 200 people per night. Accommodation is very basic on Maria Island, there are a few camping grounds to choose from or you can stay in the old prisoner’s barracks. Tourists have a heavy impact on the environment. They can carry diseases on to the Island, which could destroy the flora and fauna.

How The Park Is Managed The park is managed by

the Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania. The only vehicles on the Island are the one’s used by the rangers who manage the park. The ranger’s job is to make sure that all wild life is protected.
