Year 4
Day 1
Success Criteria:
Read the co-ordinate’s location on the x axis.
Read the co-ordinate’s location on the y axis.
Write the co-ordinates in brackets with a comma in between ( , ).
We can use co-ordinates to describe positions of points or shapes. To read co-ordinates, we read the x axis
first then the y axis and we write them this way too. An easy way to remember is ‘along the corridor and up the
stairs’.
Example: This grid is showing me the location of different animals. Using ‘along the corridor and up the stairs’,
I find the co-ordinates for different animals and describe their position. Here are a few:
The zebra’s co-ordinate is (B,8)
The panda bear’s co-ordinate is (H,7)
The snake’s co-ordinate is (E,6)
You have a try! Can you find the rabbit?
The rabbit’s co-ordinate is (___ , ___)
Find the co-ordinates
of these shapes:
Find the shape at
these co-ordinates
(E,5)
(C,2)
(D,1)
(B,5)
REMINDER
Remember to write the x axis value first
then the y axis value second in your brackets!
Success Criteria:
Go along the x axis to the co-ordinate’s location.
Go up the y axis to the co-ordinate’s location.
Plot the shape.
Can you plot the shapes in their co-ordinates?
1. (D,7)
2. (G,2)
3. (A,9)

REMINDER
Remember to draw the shapes within the
square of the co-ordinate. Make sure you
don’t cross over into the neighbouring boxes.
This week, we will be writing a newspaper article about a mysterious, pre-historical creature that has been seen lurking in the corridors of a local
school. Your first task is to use the 5 clues below to help you complete the table on page 3 (Task 1). This will help you to write your newspaper article
later this week.
Clue 1
Clue 4
Clue 5
Use the clues on the previous pages to complete the table below. We will then use this information to write our newspaper introduction tomorrow.
Challenge: Now that you have a good idea of what your newspaper article will be about, let’s create an effective newspaper headline! A headline
should be short, snappy and sometimes uses alliteration to capture the reader’s attention. For example: Cunning Creature Taunts Terrified
Teachers
Who What Where When Why
Extra Information:
Watch the video again and look at the speech bubbles of the Mum in the book so far.
Why do you think most of her speech bubbles are different? Why does she have most of the bigger
words? What does this tell us about her character?

Year 4
Day 2
Success Criteria:
Read the co-ordinate’s location on the x axis.
Read the co-ordinate’s location on the y axis.
Write the co-ordinates in brackets with a comma in between ( , ).
For this skill, you’ll use the same technique as Skill 1. The only difference is that the co-ordinate are now on the
lines the grid rather than in the square.
Example: If you look closely, the sea animals are on the lines of the grid rather than within the squares. We
can still find and write their location in the same way. Here are a few examples:
The seahorse’s co-ordinate is (2,6)
The shark’s co-ordinate is (4,6)
The clown fish’s (Nemo) co-ordinate is (3,5)
You have a try! Can you find the crab?
The crab’s co-ordinate is (___ , ___)
Success Criteria:
Go along the x axis to the co-ordinate’s location.
Go up the y axis to the co-ordinate’s location.
Plot the shape.
Can you plot the shapes in their co-ordinate?
1. (4,5)
2. (8,3)
3. (1,1)
4. (3,7)
5. (6,4)
REMINDER
Remember to draw the shapes
on the lines where the co-
ordinates cross each other!
Success Criteria:
Read the WAGOLL on the next page
Identify and underline the features from the key using different colours
Complete the key below
Key:

Challenge: Add any other features that you find to your key.
Write a short introductory paragraph using the information from your table to help you (Task 1). An effective introductory paragraph summarises what has
happened and tells the reader who, what, when, where and why.
When Who What
At approximately 2:45pm on the 25th June, 2020, a pre-historic, hybrid creature was found lurking in the corridors of
Shawlands Primary School, terrorising school staff. It has been reported that the creature has yet to be reprimanded
by local police officers and is still a significant threat to the local community.

Year 4
Day 3
Success Criteria:
Read the co-ordinate’s location on the x axis.
Read the co-ordinate’s location on the y axis.
Write the co-ordinates in brackets with a comma in between ( , ).
Write the names of you and your household in co-ordinates.
Write the co-ordinates for the vertices of this shape.
REMINDER
Remember to write the x axis value first
then the y axis value second in your brackets!
E.g. JADE = (1,10) (1,1) (2,6) (7,1)
E.g. A = (2,5)
Read the questions and instructions carefully.
1. Plot these co-ordinates on the grid:
a. (1,2)
b. (2,4)
c. (4,3)
2. Plot the 4th point so that the four co-
ordinates make a square.
3. What is the co-ordinate of the 4th point?
1. On this grid, plot 4 points to make a square
with no vertical or horizontal lines.
2. Write the co-ordinates of your square.
3. On the grid, plot 3 points to make a triangle.
4. Write the co-ordinates of your triangle.
.
Challenge: Create your own sentences using fronted adverbials that you could use in your newspaper report
Fronted adverbials are used at the start of a sentence and describe how, where or
when something is taking place. They must have a comma after them.
Examples:
Shockingly, police still haven’t managed to capture the hybrid creature.
At Shawlands Primary School, several teachers have been taunted by this pre-
historic species.
At approximately 2pm on the 4th July, 2020, it has been reported that a female
was injured by an unknown creature.
Add a fronted adverbial to the sentences below:
a teacher was attacked, resulting in a mild wound to her leg.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________
police are due to attend an emergency meeting with leading experts
to generate a plan of action.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
the hybrid creature is believed to have been hiding behind a bookshelf,
before it attacked a teacher.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
How do you think the book is going to end? What is going to happen next? Do you think Ug will make
his trousers? Will he come up with any other inventions? Will Ug’s mum ever stop shouting?
Draw the next part of the comic book below in the frames below. First make some notes of what you
think is going to happen on the lines below and then draw the comic.

Year 4
Day 4
Success Criteria:
Read the information.
Count how far to move horizontally.
Count how far to move vertically.
Plot the point in its new location.
This task focuses on a skill called translation. This means to move a point or shape to a different position
without rotating or reshaping it. This skill will just focus on translating points.
Example: On this grid, there is a Point A and a Point B. A’s co-
ordinate is (2,4). B’s co-ordinate is (6,7). The translation from A to
B is 4 right and 3 up.
Describe the translation from:
1. A to B
2. B to C
3. C to D
4. D to A
5. A to C
6. B to D
REMEMBER
Move horizontally first – LEFT or RIGHT
Then move vertically – UP or DOWN
Along the corridor and up the
stairs still applies here!
1. A. Write the co-ordinate of the green triangle.
B. Translate the green triangle 2 right and 3 down.
C. Write the new co-ordinate of the green triangle.
2. A. Write the co-ordinate of the blue cross.
B. Translate the green triangle 3 left and 2 up.
C. Write the new co-ordinate of the blue cross.
3. A. Write the co-ordinates of A and D.
B. Translate A and D 4 right and 3 down.
C. Write the new co-ordinates of A and B.
4. A. Write the co-ordinates of B and C.
B. Translate B and C 4 left and 3 up.
C. Write the new co-ordinates of B and C.
Challenge: Using the same method, describe the translation of these shapes.
In newspaper reports, writers sometimes include direct quotes. This tells us what has been by said and who said
it. They can help tell the story by giving the reader the opinions of the people involved in the event.
For example:
Earlier today, Mr Crowder, the headteacher of Shawlands Primary School revealed, “This is a very serious
issue. We are not just dealing with vermin such as mice – this is a pest on a grand scale!”
Can you add in the correct punctuation to these sentences?
1. It was the most terrifying moment of my life Miss Beck, a teacher at Shawlands Primary School
informed us.
2. We are incredibly lucky that no-one has been seriously injured reported Special Constable Moore.
3. We must take this very seriously, before it is too late a senior member of Sheffield Council explained.
4.
Challenge: Can you write your own direct quotes that you would include in your newspaper report? The quote
should either add new information to your report OR make the reader feel a certain way.
Activity Idea: Role play with someone in your house to help you to come up with some ideas. One person plays
the reporter and one person plays the interviewee.

Year 4
Day 5
Success Criteria:
Read the information.
Count how far to move horizontally.
Count how far to move vertically.
Plot the point in its new location.
Repeat for all vertices of the shape.
Now you can translate points, this skill will focus on translating shapes. This involves the same method but you
must remember to repeat the same translation for each vertex (corner) of the shape.
Example: I want to translate the red triangle 3 left and 3 up. I’ve labelled the vertices with letters. I
translated each vertex one at a time and plotted their new position. Once all the vertices have been translated,
I can joined the points up to recreate the shape in its new position.
Translate these shapes according to their instructions.
REMEMBER
Move horizontally first – LEFT or RIGHT
Then move vertically – UP or DOWN
Along the corridor and up the
stairs still applies here!
Challenge: Using the same method, translate these shapes across different quadrants.
Translate the triangle 5 left and 3 up. Translate the parallelogram 4 right and 2 down.
Now it’s time to write your newspaper report using all of the skills we have been practicing! You can either use
the template provided on the next page or create your own layout on plain paper. Here is a checklist to help
you:
Feature
Have you included it?
Third person (he, she, they) and past tense
Name of the newspaper
Headline
Subheading (gives extra information about the heading)
Picture with caption
Introduction (gives information about who, what, where, when and
why)
Direct Speech
Formal vocabulary
Fronted Adverbials
Alliteration
Conclusion
Make sure that you use all of your writing that you have produced this week, the WAGOLL and the word mats
to help you!
Remember: ALWAYS check your work regularly to make sure that it makes sense. You should also check that
you have used interesting vocabulary and that your spellings are correct before you continue.
