Year 5 Learning @ HomeTuesday (DAY ONE) WEEK THREE

Literacy ResourcesReading We are learning to: use visual literacy skills to make inferences. Use the image prompt to answer these questions.- Why has the King given his children a dragon? Do you think it’s a wise decision?- What do you think the children will try and train their dragon to do?- Can you think of any strategies that the children might use to train their dragon?- Where do the children live? Can you think of a good name for their kingdom?- Can you think of names for the children?- What is the boy feeding the dragon? - What do you think the girl is carrying? Why?

Writing We are learning to: create imaginative texts. - Can you make a list of adjectives (describe a noun) to describe the dragon?- Can you make a list of verbs (action words) to say what the dragon is doing?- Can you now write a sentence using a verb, an adverb and at least one adjectives? These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help to make them more

interesting? Think how and describe the nouns:- The boy held out some food. The dragon ate it. - He was green and had horns.

Talk to someone at home about the meaning of these words. Ask about any that you don’t know.

Write the words out – use a different colour to write the letters that are silent.

NumeracyWe are learning to: Use efficient mental and written strategies to solve problems.1. Solve the Tuesday task in the Maths Mentals questions (see resource column).2. Solve the Problems in the Resource column (Tues Wk 3 PS.pdf).3. Practice your x4 tables and division turn-arounds (sing/rap them, paint with water on the

concrete or write them).

Angles: Identify, measure and construct different angles. This term we are learning about angles. Angles are all around us. They meet when two rays

(lines) meet at a point (vertex). There are different types of angles all around us. Angles are measured in degrees.

Watch this video to learn about some types of angles that we will be learning about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGejx2fRCHU (stop at 3:05).

A right angle is 90 degrees. It is just like the corner of a square or rectangle. Tear off the corner of a piece of paper. Mark the right angle. Find four items in your house that are right angles. Eg. corner of a door!

Science (Physical Science)We are learning to: explain everyday occurrences associated with the transfer of light.

Watch the video (shared via ClassTag), ‘Reflection.mp4’ Find five or more surfaces or objects around your home that reflect light.

Optional fun ideas:

Find some leaves in the garden and do some leaf rubbings using pencil or crayon.

Year 5 Learning @ HomeWednesday (DAY TWO) WEEK THREE

Literacy ResourcesReading We are learning to: understand and use new vocabulary. Find something to read at home. It may be a magazine, a novel that you are reading, a

newspaper or something else. Write a summary that is exactly 20 words long! Remember a summary needs to include

the main points and is different to retelling a story.

Writing We are learning to: explore and create imaginative texts. A sizzling start is a beginning to a piece of

writing that immediately grabs the reader's attention and makes them want to read more. SHOW (using great words) don’t tell!

Write your own sizzling start using this picture as a prompt. See examples in the resources column.

NumeracyWe are learning to: Use efficient mental and written strategies to solve problems.1. Solve the Weds Maths Mentals questions (see resource column).2. Solve the Problems in the Resource column (Weds Wk3 PS.pdf)3. Practice your x6 tables and division turn-arounds (sing/rap them, paint with water on the

concrete or write them).

Angles: Identify, measure and construct different angles. Angles are all around us. They meet when two rays (lines) meet at

a point (vertex). There are different types of angles all around us. Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVuMULQjb3o Acute angles are smaller than a right angle. Draw or use straight

objects at home to make five different acute angles. Take a photo and upload them to Classtag.

4.

The ArtsWe are learning to: demonstrate different techniques and processes in planning and making artworks.

Create a zentangle design! View the PowerPoint (shared via ClassTag), ‘Zentangle Patterns’ and create your own! Save your artwork to display in the classroom when you return!

Optional fun ideas:

Who are two people in your life that you are thankful for? Create a card to let them know!Use the recipe to make some playdough. Create a ‘villain’ or mould your spelling words out of the playdough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjkUW9vr4-w

How is it controlled?- How do you think the hotel is powered?- How do you think it lands?

Writing We are learning to: explore and create imaginative texts. These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help to make them more

interesting? Think how and describe the nouns:- The Air Hotel 3000 is very big. It can carry lots of people. - It has a swimming pool. It has big bedrooms for the guests.

Solve the Problems in the Resource column (Thurs Wk3 PS.pdf)3. Practice your x7 tables and division turn-arounds (sing/rap them, paint with water on the

concrete or write them).

Angles: Identify, measure and construct different angles. Angles are all around us. They meet when two rays (lines) meet at

a point (vertex). There are different types of angles all around us. Obtuse angles are larger than a right angle but smaller than a

straight angle. Draw or use straight objects at home to make five different obtuse angles. Take a photo and upload them to Classtag.

Watch this video from yesterday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVuMULQjb3o

Complete the Angle worksheet from the resource column.

Science (Physical Science)We are learning to: explain everyday occurrences associated with the transfer of light.

Read the ‘Refractions’ sheet in the resource column. Use a glass, water and straw, pencil or knife to test what refraction can look like. (Instructions are on the refraction sheet)

Optional fun ideas:

There are different types of angles all around us. Re-watch the videos from previous days this week to revise angles. Draw two clocks where the time/hands would show two different right angles. Draw two clocks where the time/hands would show two different acute angles. Draw two clocks where the time/hands would show two different straight angles. Draw two clocks where the time/hands would show two obtuse acute angles.
