Feedback from: “Is it fair to shut down a city over climate change?”
“It's not fair to have protests but it is worth it.”
Henry Green Primary School
“If we don’t do something now we won’t have a world to drive around on, go to work on or even
protest on . It will very soon be too late.”Mildmay Junior school
“They should be actually doing something instead of
protesting.”Henry Green Primary School
“Climate change is destroying our world, people lay down for a
short time in the museum to share awareness and I feel that shutting down a city as part of a protest to get climate change into the news is a good thing
for our future.”Crescent Academy
“There’s so many police there that other people could have got harmed
because they needed them.”Mildmay Junior School
“It’s so interesting to hear what everyone thinks. It sounds like the questions and criticisms raised are exactly the same ones we considered too. Ultimately, no one involved in the Extinction Rebellion protests wanted
to make life harder for anyone or take the police away from important work. Unfortunately we didn’t have any other option.”

Pair talk (2 mins)What can you tell about these two children from their photos?
©VotesForSchools2019
A person’s appearance tells us very little about them. We can’t tell what they are like on the inside, what kind of friend
they are, or what talents they might have!
We should try not to let our appearance affect how we feel about ourselves because other things about us, like how we
treat other people, are so much more important.
Pair share (2 mins)Tell the person sitting next
to you one thing they would not know about you just from looking at
you.

One thing that can affect our mental health is how we feel about our appearance. The way we think and feel
about the way we look is called our body image.
Often, we compare ourselves to others and
look for differences. “He’s taller than me.”
Healthy mind and healthy body
We can be influencedby celebrities we see on the TV or on our
phones. Some people might
even make commentsabout the way we
look.
All of these things make a difference to how we feel about our bodies. It’s really important that we feel comfortable with the way we look and accept ourselves for
who we are. If we feel bad about our how our bodies look, it can make us unhappy and even unhealthy.

Why are we talking about this? The most popular superhero film ever made, Avengers:
Endgame, recently came out in cinemas, and millions of young
people have been to see it.
Today you will think about whether superhero films have any impact on the
way you feel about your own body.
Exaggerated:To make something
seem larger, better, or worse than it really is..
Superheroes typically have very exaggerated or unrealistic body shapes, and some adults are worried this could
make children feel differently about their own bodies.
Unrealistic:Not
achievable or unlikely to happen.

Pair discussion (2-4 mins) Here are some superheroes
from films that you might recognise. What do you notice about their body
shapes? Do people look like this in real life?
What is a superhero body shape like?
©VotesForSchools2019
In real life, people come in all different shapes and sizes. But superheroes are usually very muscular and slim. The men have very big
arms and the women have small waists.
A study1 found that superheroes from comics had unrealistic body shapes. If a normal human had a body like them, it
could be unhealthy.

them look just like their comic book characters.
On the next four slides you are going to see four things they do ‘behind the scenes’.

How do films change appearance?
Teams of people work for hours on computers using visual effects to create some of the characters you see in films. They can make actors look more muscular,
taller or thinner than they really are. They can even turn them into robots!

How do films change appearance?
In many films, a trick called airbrushing is used to remove wrinkles and spots from actors. It’s a way of making people look ‘better’ but not in a realistic way! It’s
hard to tell when airbrushing has been used as it looks so real.

How do films change appearance?
Actors can be asked to change the way their body looks for a film. For the Avengers film, lots of actors had to go on an extreme diet and exercise for hours
each day to build muscles like their superhero character.
Diet: An eating plan in which someone eats less food, or only certain types of food,
because they want to change their body shape.
Oats and boiled chicken were the main foods the actors could eat.

What’s the harm?“All of the actors I see on films are taller than me. I must be weird for
being this short.”
“I shouldn’t wear a top like this. It’s not for
people with arms like mine.”
“I wish I looked more like a superhero. They are so muscular and
strong.”
Table discussion (3-5 mins)What could you say to these
people if you heard them saying the following things? Try to use the words in the
yellow boxes.
Realistic:Showing people as
they really are.
Edited: Had changes
made to it.
Body image:The way we think and feel about our bodies.
Unique: One of a kind.

What’s the harm?
It’s fine to compare ourselves to people we see on the TV.
Is it important to know when actors have had their
appearances changed.
The people we see in films are realistic.
