Year 5 Summer Term 2 Science

New topic: Living things and their habitats – Life Cycles

As we continue to look at the life cycles of living things, this lesson

looks at the life cycle of a flowering plant.

Follow the slides in order, reading each one carefully.

Try to answer each question before reading the answers on the

next slide.

Copy and paste the video links in your browser when you see them.

For the task: Print off the activity sheet or create your own on

paper.

LO: to explore and discuss the life cycle of a flowering plant.

Watch this video of a dandelion changing

from a flower to a seed head.

Think about what different phases the

dandelion displays and which stage of its

lifecycle is it in.

LO: to explore and discuss the life cycle of a flowering plant.

What are the phases of the life cycle of a flowering plant?

TOP TIP: there are 6

LO: to explore and discuss the life cycle of a flowering plant.

The 6 phases are:

1. Seed dispersal

2.Germination

3.Roots and Stem

4.Leaves and Flowers

5.Pollination

6.Fertilization

These fit into 3 stages. Can you name them?

LO: to explore and discuss the life cycle of a flowering plant.

The 3 stages are:

1. Birth

2. Development

3. Reproduction

The 6 phases take place during each stage:

Birth - Seed dispersal

- Germination

Development - Roots and Stem

- Leaves and Flowers

Reproduction - Pollination

- Fertilization

Can you describe what

happens during each of

the 6 phases?

LO: to explore and discuss the life cycle of a flowering plant.

Seed dispersal (Birth)

This is the beginning of a plant's lifecycle. A seed can

be dispersed from a flower in a number of ways. Two

common ways are through the wind like a dandelion or

by animal transportation such as by birds and bees.

Trees that produce fruits and berries, such as

Elderberry trees, rely on birds to eat and then dispose of

their seeds in various locations.

Germination (Birth)Once a seed lands

and becomes

embedded within

soil, providing the

conditions are

correct (nutrients,

hydration), the seed

will then germinate

and produce two

shoots: roots and

stem.

LO: to explore and discuss the life cycle of a flowering plant.

Roots and Stem (Development)The plant then

begins to develop

its root system

and a strong

stem. These two

components are

essential for the

survival of a

plant.

LO: to explore and discuss the life cycle of a flowering plant.

Leaves and Flowers (Development)

The plant will then produce leaves and flowers; each has their

own unique purpose:

Leaves absorb sunlight and create food for the plant.

This is known as photosynthesis!

Flowers are colourful and fragrant. This attracts insects, such as

bees, to visit the plant. During this phase, the stamen (make organ)

will produce pollen and the stigma (female organ) will become

sticky.

Pollination (Reproduction)

Once the plant

has flowered, it

then moves to the

reproductive stage

of its lifecycle.

Fertilization (Reproduction)
