They also show possession.

Apostrophes = show omission and possession.

Apostrophes are used to show that you have omitted some letters when you are joining words together.the words ‘you’ and ‘are’ can be joined togetheryou + are = you're. The apostrophe takes the place of the omitted letters. Sometimes the letters need to be rearranged slightly a bit when you contract the words. For example: will + not = won't.

Today you are going to use information from the film to help you create an informative report.

In lesson 7, you wrote a paragraph about threats to the habitat of creatures on Pandora.

Today you are going to use this information (and add to it) to create an informative report, like the reports you see on BBC Newsround, highlighting concerns for the environment on Pandora.

Today you are going to use information from the film to help you create an informative report.

Look back at the mind map that you created for your paragraph about ‘threats to habitat’ from lesson 7. Then watch Pandora again from 2:10.http://www.literacyshed.com/the-sci---fi-shed.html

Stop at the point where the narrator mentions being ‘mined by humans’.

What effect is this mining having on the creatures and their habitats?

Think about the atmosphere and the vocabulary already used to describe the planet and what lives and grows.

How do humans mine there? What do they use/ how could this have a negative impact on the planet?

What are the effects of the humans’ actions?

Add anything else you can think of to your mind map?

Once you have gathered all of your ideas, choose sentence supports which suit the ideas that you have written. You won’t need a sentence support for every idea; you could join ideas or leave out the less important or similar ones.

Now write your sentences out, using the sentence supports that you have chosen.

You will need 6 to 9 sentences for your report.

You don’t need to start from scratch, though, as you have your paragraph from lesson 7 to use to help you start off.

Task: create an informative report.

Write an informative report to highlight concerns for the environment on Pandora as a result of humans mining there.

Once you’ve written your sentences out, you can rearrange the order so that you have an opening statement and information that flows logically.

Remember – you are creating a report on the concerns for the environment on Pandora as a result of humans mining there.

You can see an example of sentences in the WAGOLL.

Page 15: Year 6 English Pandora... · Summer Term Week 8 Day 4, Lesson 9 ENGLISH Year 5&6. Unit/Lesson focus: the aim of this unit of learning is to write a formal non- ... Lesson 9 L.O.:

WAGOLL:Pandora: home to many awe-inspiring, magical yet dangerous creatures all of which exist in a toxic atmosphere deadly to humans. Tropical rainforests cover vast areas of the planet and is home to many examples of the symbiotic relationship between plants, creatures and humanoids. Beyond the rainforests lie deep mines, full of unobtainium, giving everything their bioluminescent qualities. Hanging in a magnetic field, the rocky mountains hover in a state of flux, turning slowly and gracefully. Unobtainium, which is a rare earth mineral, is the most efficient super conductor known to exist. Despite the toxic atmosphere (lethal to humans) humans return frequently to mine unobtainium in vast quantities. During their mining activities, areas of rainforest are being rapidly cleared, leading to ecologists and biologists becoming worried about Pandora’s ecosystem. Experts are rightly concerned that this extensive mining activity will lead to many of Pandora’s beautiful creatures being added to the list of endangered animals, as many of the plants and animals do not exist on any other planet. At the rate that this is happening, how long will it be before life on Pandora ceases to exist?

Plenary:When you have finished, read through your sentences.

Have you •Chosen 7-9 different sentence supports?•Ordered your sentences so that they make sense and

flow?

Go through and edit your paragraph, adding in extra sentences to help.
