The diagram above shows the ‘feudal system’- a system for organising society into groups base on their roles. Around 90% of people were peasants.

Life in medieval England was very difficult for ordinary people. Most people at his time were peasants, meaning that they were poor farm workers for landowners. They lived in mud huts in small villages in the countryside and had few rights.

Most peasants were called serfs- they worked for food and shelter, not money. They could not move from their land or change their jobs without the landowners permission. These rich landowners were called nobles.

In the end, Wat Tyler was betrayed. The King had promised to hear his demands, and to give pardons to his men. However, ultimately, Tyler was struck by the mayor, and then beheaded, and the king’s men killed about 1,500 rebels.

Tyler’s men had been brutal. They had attacked houses, killed hundreds and even destroyed the Archbishop of Canterbury’s house.

When the King addressed them, he said “ I am your captain. You shall have no captain but me”. Believing him, they went home. The King took back his promises. The revolt failed. “Villeins you were and villeins you remain” he said.

How did the story end?

What happened to Wat?
