FUTURE SUCCESS
Resilience
CharacterConfidence
Confident kids take learning
risks and challenge
themselvesThese are attitudes and
behaviours centred around doing what is
right, not what is easy!
Learning to cope with
good and bad – bouncing
back!
Be Optimistic –focus on your
strengths
Choose Your AttitudeFocus on “can do” and
“action”
Stay in ControlYou can choose your response
Use your sense of humourBe able to laugh at life’s
frustrations
Problem Solve Be adaptable and
flexible
Use support networksFamily, friends, teachers
Be emotionally awareCommunicate clearly and
openly
Some common parenting mistakes:
How we can inhibit resilience Alternative approach to build resilience
Fight all their battles for them Give students opportunity to develop their own resourcefulness
Make their problem, your problem Make their problem, their problem!
Give kids too much voice Make some decisions for kids and have an expectation for them to adjust and cope
Put unrealistic or relentless pressure on kids to perform
Keep expectations in line with abilities, too much pressure builds anxiety.
Let kids give in too easily Encourage them to complete what they start even if the result isn’t perfect
Neglect to develop independence Don’t routinely do for kids what they can do for themselves
Rescue kids from challenging or “stretch” situations
Allow them to overcome challenges, grow and improve
Need A little Inspiration?
• IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL IT’S DONE - Nelson Mandela
• SUCCESS IS NOT FINAL, FAILURE IS NOT FATAL: IT IS THE COURAGE TO CONTINUE THAT COUNTS
- Winston S. Churchill
• STRENGTH DOES NOT COME FROM WINNING. YOUR STRUGGLES DEVELOP YOUR STRENGTHS. WHEN YOU GO THROUGH HARDSHIPS AND DECIDE NOT TO SURRENDER, THAT IS STRENGTH
- Arnold Schwarzenegger
Part 2 – Developing a consistent study regime
Part 3 – Setting up a study spaceStep 1 – Set up your space• Find a good sized desk and comfortable chair• Ensure adequate lighting – A desk lamp is best • Keep your supplies handy – Pens, pencils,
calculators etc are all convenient excuses to go for a wander…
Step 2 – Keep things organised• Organise study materials by course
and work out an efficient way to keep all the loose bits together
• Using a bulletin board can be great for organising assignments and homework tasks
• The school diary is an excellent tool for keeping track of due dates
• Organising your computer files is just as important – if you haven’t engaged a cloud based storage service now it’s time to do that.
Step 3 - Reduce distractions• Get rid of the random clutter from the
desk• Don’t take your phone in with you,
even on silent mode. • Block out distracting sounds
– Multitasking is a myth– Some students work well with “white
noise” background noises– Avoid headphones if possible – ambient
noise is best. • Use the space just for studying if
possible • Colour and decorations can be
motivating as well
Part 4 – Electives Update for 2020 and Question time
• Elective offerings have been finalised
• Equal numbers of Japanese/French have been setup
• Mr Horrell will discuss a plan B with anyone who misses out on their preferences
• Students will receive an email confirming their electives and which semester they are doing each one.
