Notes to Unaudited Financial Statements

Organization: NBS Animal Rescue was founded on October 12, 2011 by Aaron Fortin, Rebecca Akins, and

Jaime Wolfe. Our administrative office is located at 1457 East Twelve Mile Road, Madison Heights, MI

48071. No dogs are housed at this location as it is administrative only. NBS Animal Rescue is a 100% foster

based canine rescue that is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of healthy, well-balanced,

dogs and puppies into loving families in Michigan. Our primary goals include the rescue and rehabilitation of

homeless animals in need, educating our community regarding proper pet care, and to participate in

community youth outreach programs. Some key components to our rescue mission are as follows:

• We spay/neuter every rescue dog in order to help end the cycle of unwanted litters.

• We treat each and every dog as if it was our own to give the respect, love and dignity it deserves.

• We maintain the highest standards of care for every dog we come in contact with, including the highest

quality veterinary care, housing, love, training and compassion.

Mission Statement: To foster, love and adopt homeless dogs one by one until there are none.

Cash and cash equivalents: NBSAR considers all highly liquid investments and debt instruments whose

original maturity is 90 days or less to be cash equivalents. NBSAR maintains balances that are within federally

insured limits.

NBSAR finished 2012 with a balance in the Savings account of $8,159.51.

The current balance in Savings is earmarked in the following way:

Administrative: 2,675.00

Emergency & Medical: 4,475.00

Fundraising: 1,009.51

Total: $8,159.51

Property and equipment: Property and equipment over $1,000 is recorded at cost and is depreciated on a

straight-line basis over the estimated useful lives of the assets. Currently NBSAR has no property and

equipment.

Donated assets are capitalized at the estimated fair value at the date of receipt.

Revenue recognition: NBSAR’s primary sources of revenue are contributions and adoption fees.

Contributions received by NBSAR are recognized as revenue in the period received. Contributions are

considered to be unrestricted unless specifically restricted by the donor. NBSAR holds several special

fundraising events during the year to raise contributions for general support and awareness within the

community.

Through October 31, 2012, a portion of all Adoption Fees were considered contributions. On November 1,

2012, NBSAR adopted a policy that 100% of the Adoption Fee would be fee based income for our Adoption

program and therefore no portion would be tax deductible.

Tax status: NBSAR has been determined to be exempt from federal income tax pursuant to Internal Revenue

Code Section 501(c)(3), and is classified as an organization that is not a private foundation.

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

When starting NBS Animal Rescue in 2011, we were unsure what this venture would look like in 6 months, 1

year or 5 years. After having spent many years volunteering for other rescue organizations, we felt very

confident pooling all of the good aspects of each experience into what is now known as NBSAR. We are happy

to reflect on where we have been and allow that to help shape us as we move forward.

NET INCOME. Though we are very pleased to have posted positive net income of $9,477.78 in 2012, we are also

aware that this number is as high as it is because of the personal dollars spent by our founding members. We do

not reimburse any member of our organization for gasoline expenses, cell phone expenses or any other personal

expenses related to rescue. The founding members collectively spent more than $6,000 in supplies alone for

their foster animals in 2012. But a commitment and focus to keep cash within the rescue continues to be a

major focus to be able to fund emergencies, therefore the founding members remain committed to pay for

items out of their pockets as they are able to afford to.

SAVINGS ACCOUNT. We established a Savings account in March 2012 with the express purpose of saving money

for three separate funds.

The first fund we are saving for are fundraising events. Each fundraiser we do, we take 20% of the total

proceeds and put it into savings for a Fundraising Fund. Though we do not heavily focus on fundraising events,

our goal is to host one large scale event per year. These kinds of events cost money to host. Our goal is $5,000

in our fundraising fund and we are at $1,009.51 as of December 31, 2012.

Out of every adoption fee, $50 is also moved to savings: $25 for administrative and $25 for emergency. We

have also occasionally had unexpected donations that help these funds.

Our Administrative Fund is set aside for purchasing higher cost administrative items such as bulk volunteer T-

shirts, business cards, office supplies, items for adoption events, etc. that we may not have room for in our

operating budget. Our goal for this fund is $3,000 and we are currently at $2,675.00 as of December 31, 2012.

And finally, our Emergency Fund is specifically set aside for emergency rescue expenses whether that is a

medical cost, rehabilitation cost or supply cost. Our goal is to have $10,000 in an Emergency fund that we can

use to support NBSAR dogs as well as other State of Michigan rescues’ dogs and our balance as of December 31,

2012 is $4,475.00 in this fund.

RESCUE CERTIFICATION. One of the areas that we are committed to is the continual elevation of the rescue

industry, including our organization, to higher and better standards. We challenge ourselves on a daily basis to

be accountable and transparent in our organization at all levels, to have the highest level of professionalism and

to consistently encourage collaboration between groups to foster teamwork. A board member was actively

involved in the Michigan Rescue Certification committee to draft the first ever program to establish standards

for rescues in the state of Michigan. This program aligns well with a goal to help elevate the animal rescue

Page 7

industry and help establish standards for rescues in Michigan. We applied for certification in November of 2012.

We were notified in January 2013 that we were approved as one of only two 5-star (highest certification level)

rescues that applied in Michigan. We are honored to be a part of this program and to continue elevating

standards for our rescue.

ADOPTIONS AND FOSTER HOMES. We are looking forward to continuing to increase adoptions in 2013. We adopted

86 dogs in 2012 and believe that we have the capacity to adopt 125-150 dogs in 2013. We have continued to

expand our foster home base. We brought on four new foster homes in 2012 and are looking to expand to 3-4

more in 2013. We are particular about our foster homes that we work with as we believe in quality over

quantity. We look for dedicated foster families that will focus on training, socialization and setting up structure

for these animals that are typically coming from poor situations. We believe that we have some of the most

dedicated and capable foster homes in the State of Michigan.

NEW PROGRAMS IN 2013. We are currently working on a number of programs to launch in 2013. We are putting

together a “Senior-to-Senior” program that will focus on pairing senior dogs with senior citizens at a reduced

adoption fee or as foster homes where NBSAR covers all of the expenses. Our goal is to save more senior dogs

from kill shelters while also increasing the quality of life for people who are seniors that are often turned away

by other rescues. Another program that we are working on is a “Rescue-to-Rescue Supply Bank”. One of the

areas that rescues consistently are in need of is supplies. By pooling funding and/or receiving grants to purchase

supplies, we are hoping to purchase supplies much closer to wholesale and to distribute them to Michigan

rescues as needed. We are also working on a “Train Me Home” program that will help owners who are

considering surrendering their pet due to a lack of resources by pairing them up with a local trainer to go their

home to work with them one-on-one. These are just three of the exciting programs that we are currently

working on putting together for 2013.

It truly takes a village to care for the homeless pet problem in the State of Michigan. NBSAR remains committed

to Foster, Love and Adopt homeless dogs one by one until there are none.

GOALS FOR 2013:

• Increase Adoptions to 125 dogs

• Add 3-4 new Foster Homes

• Establish 3 new Grant Programs

• Secure a Rescue Vehicle

• Increase Corporate Donors and Partnerships

Thank you for your continued support in 2013.
