No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer a leaderof soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer I realize that I am a member of atime honored corps which is knO Vll as The Backbone of the Army.I am proud of the Corps of Noncommissioned Officers and will at all timesconduct myself so as to bring credi t upon the Corps the :rv I ilitary Service and

my country regardless of the situation in which I find myself. I will not use mygrade or position to attain pleasure profit or personal safety.

Competence is my watch-word. My two basic responsibilities will always beuppermost in my mind--accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of mysoldiers. I will strive to remain tactically and technically proficient. I am aware

of my role as a Noncommissioned Officer. I will fulfill my responsibilitiesinherent in that role. All soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will

provide that leadership. I know my soldiers and I will always place their needsabove my own. I will communicate consistently with my soldiers and never

leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending bothrewards and punishment.

Officers of my unit rill have maximum time to accomplish their duties; theywill not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as

well as that of my soldiers. I will be loyal to those with whom I serve; seniorspeers and subordinates alike. I will exercise initiative by taking appropriateaction in the absence of orders. I will not compromise my integrity nor my

moral courage. I will not forget nor will I allow my comrades to forget that weare professionals Noncommissioned Officers leaders

stablished in late 1971, the Noncommissioned Officer ducation System (NCO S) consists of four progressive levelsof instruction'(Primary, sic, Advanced and Senior). TIte design of each level is to prepare Noncommissioned Officers(NCOs) for positions of increased responsibility compatible with their career development and grade progression. The United States Army Sergeants Major Course represents th capstone of the NCO S. It s the pinnacle of formalmilitaryschooling for tlte Noncommissioned Officer.

The United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USMMA) was established on 1 July 1972 and began instruction inJanuary 1973. Our curriculum design broadens the student's current knowledge base. This approach differs from theMilita ry Occupational Specialty (MaS) related training at th basic and advanced levels of the NCO S. The primeeducational technique employed throughout the course is th small group participatory learning process.

USASMA became the proponent for developing common leader training for all Advanced Noncommissioned OfficerCourse (ANCOC) in June 1981. The common leader training for ANCOC covers five major subject areas: (1) leadership,(2) communications, (3) training management, (4) professional skills, and (5) military studies. Further eHorts at USASMAto standarize NCO training resulted in the addition of a new Warrior Leader Course (WLC). This course is a blend of theprevious Primary Leadership Course (PLC) and th Primary Noncommissioned Officer Course (PNCOC) i"to one course tobetterserve combat support and combat service support Soldiers at the junior NCO level.

USASMA maintains operational control over th United States Army First Sergeant Course (FSC). This five-weekprogram trains Master Sergeants, Fi rst Sergeants, and Sergeant First Class Promotables in the f iner poin ts of performingpresent or future duties as a First Sergeant. TIte FSC began in October, 1981 and has graduated more than 900 Soldiersannually since its inception. USASMA developed the common leader training for all Basic NCO Courses (8NCOC), and hasbeen the proponent since 1984 for reserve component leader training for th FSC, ANCOC, 8NCOC, and WLC.

In 1989, USASMA began conducting th Command Sergeant Major Course CSMC). The CSMC is a one-week course thatprovides newly assigned Command Sergeants Major CSM) and CSM designees with the knowledge needed to serveeffectively as CSM. The 42.5 hours of instruction include leader transition, training management, sponsorship, assigning and utilizing Soldiers, boards, retention, th NCOIR system, quality of life, and unit readiness. The train ingfocus is on the Commander/CSM relationship and th duties of th CSM in training th unit to mission standards. Thecourse instructors are current CSMs brought from th field. All Noncommissioned Officers awaiting positions as CSMsmust attend this course. USASMA also conducts the CSM Spouse Course in conjuction with the CSMC. This courseenhances the rol l of the CSM spouse providing insight and guidance regarding their new position in th Army Community.

In January 1991, USASMA began instructing th Battle taff Noncommissioned Officer Course (SSNCOC). The courseeffectively combines the programs of instrcution (POls) of th former Operations and Intelligence Course and thePersonnel Logis tics Course into a six-week program. In addi tion to being th proponent for NCO S, USASMA is alsoresponsible for the NCO Journal and The United States Army, Museum of the Noncommissioned Officer.

The NCO Journal is a quarterly publication for the Noncommissioned Officer of th United States Army. Our mission isto provide a forum for tlte open exchange of ideas and information, to support training, education and development of theNCO Corps, and to foster a close bond among its members.

The Museum traces the history of the NCO ranks through 200 years of history. 8egining with th birth of theContinental Army in 1775 and highlighting such events as th expansion westward in th Civil War, th Indian frontier,American expansion overseas, World War I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and the development of tlte NCO S, museumexhibits portray the evolution of the NCO in war and peace.

Using uniforms, weapons, tools and equipment, museum exhibits present a visual image of th NCO's duties, daiy lifeand accomplishments. Documents, posters, drawing and photograps further enhance visual images provided by museumexhibits. In addition to the exhibits, the museum provides visi tors with information on a wide variety of subjects related to NCO

history. xamp/es include: A Short History of th NCO , Mounted Troops on the Plains: 1833-1845 , "Soldiers and Traderon the Missouri: 1819-1820 , NCO Wives on the frontier: 1870 , "The Volunteer: 1846 , and " lack Soldiers in theAmerican Frontier Army."
