2 The Brandeis Bulletin Spring 2018

As you look at the front cover of this wonderful Spring Bulletin, you may be thinking “I’ve seen this before.” You are right! With the advent of Hurricane Irma, the scheduled Fall Showcase had to be cancelled. However, “the show must go on” and we are delighted that Ron Magill will still be our presenter at our Spring Showcase Luncheon. Our kudos to the BNC Board, who moved forward at rapid speed after the storm and were able to provide us with outstanding Learning Opportunities and other fall events.

We are also very excited about BNC South Miami-Dade’s 40th year anniversary. The founding members led by Marlene Kohn, president,

began our chapter in 1978. Through the years, we have grown to a membership nearing 400, but these remarkable women

established a framework for our chapter that is still the essence of our organization. Celebrate with us and enjoy the fantastic Learning Opportunities and activities ahead in 2018.

20 ROSENWALD: The remarkable story of a Jewish Partnership with African-American Communities

Rosenwald is the incredible story of Julius Rosenwald, who never finished high school, but rose to become

the President of Sears. This Jewish philanthropist joined forces with African American communities in the Jim Crow South to build 5,300 schools dur-ing the early part of the 20th century. Inspired by the Jewish ideals of tzedakah and tikkun olam, Julius Rosenwald used his wealth to become one of America’s most effective

philanthropists. Because of his modesty, his philan-thropy and social activism are not well known today.

He gave away $62 million in his lifetime. Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2018 Time: 7:30 PM Place: Temple Beth Am Auditorium, 5950 North Kendall Drive, Pinecrest Donation:* $18 Liaison: Gail Tescher [email protected] or 305-442-6493
