Once upon a time… there was a bro-therhood of Giants. They were loved by all for their seeming altruism. Everyone agreed with their founding goal of improving

humans’ lives through the values of sharing and exchanging, totally free of charge. Their technolo-gies had changed the daily life of men, women and children, who were grateful.Scrooge had revolutionized the way we search for things. Azon had transformed our access to books. Fbok had invented a new way of commu-nicating with friends and finding new ones. Aple had made wonderful tools for creating and for consul-ting one’s favorite works. Toutoub had built the wor-ld’s biggest video library. Moft had invented a new language to allow all the machines in the world to talk with one another… Authors particularly loved these Giants who allowed them to be closer than ever to their admirers and to find new ones. New creators were born at the same time as the Giants, they grew together – with goodwill towards one another. The Giants had been born in the United States, but the world had become their home. The Giants saw their mission as directed and all of humanity –  free of any borders, societal or geographical, which would thus need abolishing. But this ambi-tion collided with the rules of the secular world, which were not so easy to undo, but the Giants thought could be circumvented. Like a 21st cen-tury Tower of Babel, the Giants thus became

multilingual, speaking French in Marseilles, Greek in the Cyclades, German in Stuttgart, Spa-nish in Sevilla… even Catalan in Barcelona. Because for the planetary success of their project, the Giants could neither exclude nor ostracize anyone. They spoke to both the majority and the minorities. They were as at ease with ecologists as with climate change denial, with believers in democracy and the Alt-Right… The Giants endorsed every topic… and all their opposites, because their algorithms wanted foremost to be close to each individual, their culture, lifestyle, and intimate thoughts, so as to become indispen-

sable to each and every per-son. In less than a generation, the Giants’ ser-vices seemed so magical that humanity forgot how they had ever lived before. But this magic came at a cost. That’s how the Giants became rich, very rich, richer than even they had ever imagined. They had

accumulated such unprecedented riches in record time by seizing on the value of the traditional players, who didn’t realize this immediately, then didn’t know how to resist, and finally could not resist as the Giants had become ogres. As the Giants’ services had become so lucrative, money had become the foremost goal of their existence. The Giants had grown too fast. They lived in an era that forgot to take its time, impa-tient as they were to grow richer with each day. Convinced that their work was for the good of all humanity, the Giants didn’t understand why anyone would resist.

And that is where the fairytale ends.Because resisting the Giants’ rules is now treated with suspicion. The map of despotism is gradually being drawn. Yet the rules that the Giants put forth as universal cannot stand above those of the old laws of democratically elec-ted states. At this very moment in history, the Giants’ mission – put forward as altruistic and univer-sal – has unfolded and revealed itself foremost to be planned by and for the Giants. They are par-ticularly interested in Europe where the people are not only educated (thanks to public poli-cies), but there is also enough money to buy their telephones, computers, subscriptions, smart watches… and enough free time to use them. The Giants need the Europeans, and furthermore, Europe was unable to counter with an equivalent of an Airbus for the internet. Contrary to what they claim, the Giants do not

fight for our freedoms – for which our people bat-tled before they ever existed – but only for their own financial stakes. The Giants have put great effort in campaigning against the Directive on Copyright, which the

European Commission correc-tly recognized as of great impor-tance, because they see it as a threat to their interests. The huge sums of money that they have spent to manipulate Euro-pean citizens, in the hopes of influencing your vote, are an insult to our intelligence and a slap in the face to your integrity. That is why we writers, musi-cians, film-makers, web content producers, photographers, com-posers, journalists, choreo-

graphers, dancers, actors, editors, producers… we collectively call on you Members of the European Parliament. By defending copyright, we are not just defending our financial and moral rights. We

are defending a certain vision of cultural sharing. We are defending the right to creation. We are defending the right to give the fairytale a different ending. We are defending the right to determine our own story and not live in the one that the Giants thought up for us. We are defending the common interest and not private profit. Because we are defending nothing less than our most pre-cious good: a certain idea of democracy.By voting for the Directive on Copyright, you are not only telling the world that Europe knows how to defend its citizens’ interests better than these Giants who pretend to do so in their name, as you did with the GDPR. You will also be telling the world that Europe remains faithful to its values and to democracy, invented on its continent 2,500 years ago and still enlightening and guiding humanity.

Dear Members of the European Parliament, Europe and the world are watching you.

Poll: Europeans want stronger regulation of Tech Giants Two months ahead of the European elections and a few days ahead of the vote on the copyright directive in the digital single market, a Harris Interactive poll showed that European citizens would like the EU to create safeguards so that dominant tech companies don’t get to decide how Europe’s cultural wealth is distributed. It showed that Europeans care about creators getting paid fairly and are worried that EU institutions are not doing enough to rein in the power of the U.S. Tech Giants.

The traditional players were

powerless to resist.

The giants have seen

the Directive as a threat to

their interests.

Dear Members of the European Parliament,WE UNDERSIGNED EUROPEAN CREATORS - ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING - FROM ALL ARTISTIC FIELDS, ARE ASKING YOU TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND ADOPT THE COPYRIGHT DIRECTIVE WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY. Our films, plays, books, articles, music, drawings, paintings, sculptures, photos, choreographies and other forms of art are a source of wealth and pride for European culture. Our art is both our passion and our profession. For people to continue enjoying European culture in today’s digital envi-ronment, and for creators to be able to make a living today and tomor-row, we urge you to adopt the Copyright Directive. This directive creates a much-needed level playing field between us, the creators, and those who communicate and distribute our works on different media and platforms. It is a matter of mutual respect. It is essential to the sustainability of our activities and therefore of the cultural and artistic diversity of Europe. It is in everyone’s interests to promote authors’ rights so that they may continue to create, and in doing so bring lasting benefits to the whole of society. To retain Europe’s best talents and build the next generation of European creators, we must safeguard creators’ rights and promote their livelihoods. We cannot afford to wait another decade for copyright legis-lation to be adapted to the digital environment. This is not only about us but about the future of Europe’s culture. You have the opportunity to send a historical and positive message to future generations of creators: that they are valued and that they will be fairly remunerated for their work.We therefore urgently call on you, Members of the European Parliament, to say yes to this reform.

6 European Parl iament • Strasbourg • 26th March 2019 #Yes2Copyright 7

15 March 2019

Dear Ms Wojcicki,After almost three years’ worth of in-depth examinations and negotiations involving the three EU Institutions, 28 Member States, 751 MEPs, and thousands of experts and stakehol-ders, the European Parliament is about to take a formal decision on the directive on Copy-right in the Digital Single Market. The aim of one of the main provisions of this directive – Article 13 – is to ensure that plat-forms such as YouTube fairly compensate the creators whose works are made available through their services. In other words, to play fair and respect the creators who made You-Tube what it is today. We believe that the Copyright Directive will create a level playing field for the European Digital Single Market, with fair and equal rules for all. There is ample public debate around this directive and your right to defend your posi-tion, as a concerned party, is not in question. Indeed, the positions you have taken in the media or through your own videos against Article 13 are well known and nourish the public debate. However, since the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly on Sept. 12 to approve its version of the Copyright Directive, You-Tube has been actively using its own services to influence public opinion, often with mislea-ding or false information. You have taken advantage of your conside-rable influence over 1.8 billion monthly users as the biggest media entity in the world to:• circulate your own message to video makers

and YouTubers• create a uniquely formatted page, similar to

SaveYourInternet, on Youtube.com• create a portal comprising all videos defen-

ding your position on Article 13 • run banners, pop-ups and push notifications

on YouTube defending your point of view and directing traffic to your unique You-Tube.com webpage

This is unprecedented and raises ethical questions.

Moreover, YouTube enabled the propagation of misinformation - such as the claims that Article 13 would lead to the shutting down of YouTube channels, kill European startups, put an end to memes and gifs and harm freedom of speech. In other words: change the Internet as we know it. Such scaremongering delibera-tely ignores the special protections provided in the text and misleads public opinion. It interferes with the democratic and balanced debate that all European citizens are entitled to. We believe it is totally unfair and unacceptable that your service, which dominates the online market, is exclusively used as a media service to promote your own commercial interests in a debate over European legislation. You advocate freedom of expression but what we have seen is a media service dedicated to the promotion of its own views, based on false information and scare tactics.

We believe in pluralism and open, democratic debate. We believe our views also need to be voiced to your audience. That is what freedom of speech is all about. This is why we are asking you to let us, over the week of March 18-24:• send a message to the same YouTubers so we

can share with them our vision of article 13 – the one we promote on our website, www.article 13.org.

• publish banner ads on YouTube as you did for the “saveyourinternet” campaign

Acting as a media service requires responsibi-lity and accountability to ensure democratic debate.

JOINT STATEMENT ON THE COPYRIGHT DIRECTIVE

We, the undersigned organisations, representing authors, composers, writers, journalists, photographers and others working in all artistic fields, news agencies, book, press and music publishers, audiovisual and

independent music producers call on the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament to adopt the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market.

This Directive has been long sought to create a much-needed level playing field for all actors of the creative sector in the European Digital Single Market, whilst giving citizens better access to a wider array of content. This is a historical opportunity. We need an internet that is fair and sustainable for all. This is why we urge

policymakers to adopt the Directive quickly, as agreed in trilogue negotiations.
