Term 2 Week 10ב' תמוז תשע''ח

Parashas KorachAdapted from Volume 4 of Likutei Sichot

The story related in this week’s Torah portion, Korach, contains a lesson for each and every Jew.

“And it came to pass, that on the next day Moshe came … and behold, the staff of Aharon … had budded… and bloomed blossoms … and yielded almonds.” This was one of the signs by which Hashem demonstrated that He had chosen Aharon for the priesthood (from whom all Kohanim are descended). But what is the special significance of almonds vis-à-vis the priesthood?

Of all the fruits that exist in the world, almonds are the earliest to mature. The interval between the appearance of blossoms on the tree and the time when the nuts have ripened and are ready to eat is the shortest of any variety of fruit.

The Alter Rebbe (Rebbe Shneur Zalman, founder of Chabad

Chassidism) explained that almonds are symbolic of the Kohanim, who bless the Jewish people with Priestly Blessing. In the same way that the almond is quick in maturing, so too is the blessing of the Kohanim fulfilled in a swift manner, and without delay.

The Talmud states: “Kohanim are speedy and diligent.” Kohanim are likened to almonds, for not only do they fulfil their priestly duties but they do so with speed and alacrity.

When Hashem revealed His Holy Torah, He told each and every Jewish man and woman: “And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests.” Every Jew is likened to a Kohen, and must therefore derive a lesson from the priestly service:

The Holy One, Blessed Be He, entrusts each and every Jew with a Divine mission in life: to observe Torah and mitzvos in the physical world, and to pass this knowledge on to the next generation, by providing his children with a Torah-true

education. How are we to fulfil this assignment? In the same manner as “almonds,” i.e., with diligence and alacrity, never missing an opportunity to do an additional mitzvoh. A Jew should never put off till later a mitzvoh he can do right now. Rather, he should run to fulfil his mission in carrying out the Divine will.

Furthermore, when we act with alacrity, Hashem promises that the fruit our good deeds produce will be swift in coming. Just like the almond, we will not have to wait a long time to see their results.

Parshas Shlach - Grand Challah BakeOn Wednesday 6th June 2018, all the children in the Gurewicz Early Learning Centre participated in a very memorable and

special event - A Grand Challah Bake. In honour of Parshas Shelach each Kinder class made dough. In the GELC playground the children had a Grand Assembly. The children said a resounding “Amein” to the bracha on the separation of challah, a great mitzvah. They then worked hard creating their own individual challah, basting it, topping it and

placing it in a baking tray to take home with them. The children sang and danced and everyone (including all the Morot) had an amazing time. The sun shone brightly and the atmosphere was electric as Morah Shoshana created another wonderful experience for everyone in the Gurewicz Early Learning Centre.

OUR WORLD – World Environment Day and World Oceans DayHashem created the world in 6 days. Children love to learn what He made on each day. Each one of Hashem’s creations is a miracle and we must look after and protect these special gifts. As you read last week the children across our Centre celebrated World Environment Day. To care for

our environment is a Mitzvah that we need to embed in our daily practice. We hope that your children are transferring the knowledge, values and midos toivos that they learn in Kinder and at home.

Last Friday we celebrated World Oceans Day. Every year, World Oceans Day provides a unique opportunity to honour, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean. It is also a reminder to everyone of the major role the oceans have in our everyday lives.

Existing payments like the Child Care Benefit and the Child Care Rebate will stop as soon as they are replaced with the new subsidy on JULY 2nd 2018.Many of our families have already updated their details and signed up to the new system, but there are still many families yet to do so.Every family must set up an online Centrelink account through myGov and provide an estimate of their income for the coming 2018-19 financial year. The government will also assess how many hours a fortnight couples spend working, studying, interning, searching for a job or volunteering. If you have NOT signed up for the new system by July 1st, then this will have a financial impact in the Childcare Subsidy.

Hachnoso L’ ChederIt has been a custom that when the time comes for a young boy to start learning Torah with other children, we take him to “Cheder” and arrange a special Seder Hachnoso L’Cheder. Some of our boys had the opportunity to participate in this very memorable Simcha on Monday, 11 June. Rabbi Smukler conducted the proceedings for us and kept the children and our many guests fascinated and enthralled with all the minhagim. Each participating child was brought in by his father (or grandfather) wrapped in a tallis – as the Minhag (custom) is that a child should be careful to see only pure and holy things on that

day. The other Minhagim include: reading the alef-beis with nekudos both forwards and then backwards; drizzling honey onto an alef beis chart and enjoying the sweet taste; eating honey cake with special pesukim engraved on it; eating a hard-boiled egg also with special pesukim written on it; giving Tzedakah; and being sprinkled with soft lollies. The boys had a wonderful and meaningful experience surrounded by their families.

Thank you Rabbi Smukler and the Kinder Staff for helping to make it such a wonderful morning and to Devorah Leah Schachter for the time and effort that went into preparing the honey cake and hard boiled eggs with all the appropriate pesukim engraved and written on them. ↑ Hachnoso L' Cheder in the Erdi Hall

SpaceThe children in Kinder 9 and 2 have demonstrated an interest in space. The children are enjoying exploring this topic in a

variety of ways including working together on space floor puzzles and developing fine motor skills and tool control as they cut out stars. They have been learning about

the moon, stars, sun and variety of planets that make up the solar system. This topic inspires a great deal of discussion and many extension-learning opportunities.

Music Corner Morah Zehava Herzog

In the 3-Year-old rooms we did a movement activity with scarves to help us hear and feel changes in the music (musical form). The children listened carefully to the marching section and marched on the spot to the beat. In the next section, we imagined we were birds and flew softly around the room, waving our scarves to the music. Suddenly, the march returned and we stopped where we were and marched on the spot until the end. The

music used was Syncopated Clock by Leroy Anderson.

In the 4-Year-old rooms we did some vocal exploration with movement. We learned a little chant about a great big monster with a little voice. Our voice changed with the phrases, then we added appropriate movements to tie it all in. The poem:

I’m a great big monster (deep voice) with a little little voice (squeaky voice) x2 whisper, I whisper, I haven’t got a choice (whisper) I’m a great big monster (deep voice) with a little little voice (squeaky voice) x2 ↑ Music with Morah Zehava

Australia’s Biggest Morning TeaThe Yeshivah Beth Rivkah Preschools once again hosted the annual “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” last Thursday, 7th June in the foyer of the Gurewicz Early Learning Centre and raised a substantial amount of Tzedakah for the Cancer Council. Thank you to all the wonderful children and staff who contributed by baking the delicacies and decorating the foyer for this event. It is important that children learn at a very early age that Tzedakah can be given in a variety of ways. Also a huge thanks to Yeshivah Beth Rivkah Parent’s Assosiation's participation in making our morning a great success for a cause that is so close to many of our hearts. Parents were able to socialise, mingle and enjoy the delicious treats while giving Tzedakah to such a worthy charity.

Mini Challah Bake in Kinder 11Since the children were learning about Challah in last week’s Parsha, the Kinder 11 girls decided to have their own mini Challah Bake to which they invited the Year 4 girls from Beth Rivkah Primary. Each girl had a buddy and together they kneaded and braided their own delicious Challah. Both age groups enjoyed the experience and it was very special to watch the interactions between them.

Mercedes Dadon CrècheThis week in the Mercedes Dadon Creche the children continued learning the importance of including fruits and vegetables in our diet and the HoEitz and HoAdama Brachos. The children were so excited to go on an excursion to Dom’s Balaclava Fruit Mart on Carlisle Street. They experienced touching, smelling and looking at all the different fruits and vegetables in the shop and had the opportunity to buy their favourite fruit or vegetable.

Our Fascinating BodiesThis week a few of the classes began a unit on 'The Body'. Kinder 8 children started exploring their faces. The boys looked into the mirror and discovered features on their

face: pupils, irises, eyebrows and eyelashes. These were all added to their self-portraits, which were drawn in great detail. The boys are now looking forward to colouring in or painting their artwork and displaying them in their classroom.

In Kinder 1 as an extension to this topic,

the girls have become increasingly interested in doctors. So, they decided to set up their own doctor’s room in the classroom. This included various outfits, a waiting room, medical certificates, x ray machine and bed. The girls had so much fun exploring and extending on their imaginative play.

Year 2 Ripponlea ExcursionThe Year Two class recently went on an excursion to Ripponlea Estate as part of the Integrated Studies unit. The day was divided into four parts. There was a time machine and tour of the mansion, playing games from the 1900s on the lawn, an information hunt around the property finding clues to certain questions and performing duties that the servants did, such as laundry and dusting. A great day was had by all students and teachers. The highlights were definitely the tug-of-war and the time machine.

Year 2OJ - Chumash RevisionYear 2OJ students like to revise the Chumash in many different ways. We learn the Pesukim inside the Chumash and work diligently through our well designed and thorough workbook. We also play games and do various activities

on the text of the Chumash. For example, earlier in the year we measured the length and height of the Tevah using rulers and balloons. One of our favourite games on Chumash words is Quizlet Live. You are welcome to come see Quizlet in action. ([email protected]).

We enjoy participating in collaborative group whiteboard games, relay races,

finding prefixes on the white board, picture match on the smart board and Quiz-Quiz-Trade where we test each other on flash cards then swap and find a new partner. In short learning Chumash is fun, enjoyable and productive, we even just learnt two Pesukim without the teachers help.

Safrus ActivityIn preparation for Gimmel Tammuz, Yeshivah Boys have been learning about the Rebbe’s Mivtzoyim. In connection to Mivtzos Mezuza, Tefillin and Letter in Sefer Torah and all the learning we have done, all classes were treated to a hands-on demonstration by Levi Rosenbaum. Among the exciting items that boys saw were the inside a pair of Tefillin, the biggest Kosher Mezuzah possible and parchment from a real Sefer Torah! It was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to conceptualise their learning.

Pre Gimmel Tammuz Family LearningThere was excitement in Yeshivah this past Sunday when boys came with their Fathers/Grandfathers and enjoyed an intellectually stimulating learning session in preparation for Gimmel Tammuz.

Challenging riddles, learning and quizzes contributed to a very enjoyable experience! A big Yasher Koach to all those who participated in, and contributed to, such a successful event.

Hot Chips for a Library Fundraiser. The Jewish Life Committee will be running a Hot Chip day to fundraise for a Free Jewish book library in Yeshivah Primary. This library will provide the opportunity for families to bring in Jewish books they may not use anymore and give someone else the opportunity to enjoy them. In turn, families will also be able to enjoy books they may not have read yet. Details of this library will follow.

Yeshivah Boys Join in on C Care’s Soup in a Jar ProgramThis past Wednesday, Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, Yeshivah Primary boys joined forces with C Care to enhance independence for individuals living in isolating conditions. The Soup-in-a-Jar program involves preparing jars of pre-measured nutrient-rich dry ingredients, along with straightforward cooking instructions. The students

added some heartfelt handwritten messages to their jars to warm the recipients' hearts while the soup warms their tummies!

These jars will be delivered weekly by C Care volunteers to socially-isolated Jewish people in need. Recipients who often struggle to prepare meals from scratch due to long-term physical or mental barriers can now independently create their own delicious, wholesome soup. A simple yet effective way to empower others.

Thank you C Care for giving our students this wonderful opportunity to actualise their learning of Ahavas Yisroel and Tzedakah, whilst helping you do your great work.

Differing OpinionsBy Mrs J Rosen, Head of Teaching & Learning and Rabbi L Morozow, Head of Jewish Studies

In all areas of our daily life, whether it involves the family, business, education, friendship or community, it is not uncommon for us to have differences of opinion and even arguments. Topics and points of disagreement or contention will vary from those that need little discussion to those that create strong views and passions and necessitate ongoing dialogue.

It is acceptable for individuals to have different points of view and the ability to discuss these in an open and respectful manner. The Rebbe of Kotzk interpreted the famous Talmudic phrase, “Just like people’s faces are different, so too they have different opinions”, as an understanding of the correct attitude to interpersonal conflict. In other words, just as we accept that we all look different, we should just as readily accept the notion that we also think differently and will consequently have different ideas and opinions.

There are many records in the Torah and throughout our history, of occasions where disagreement and anger created the grounds for pain, hurt and ultimately destruction. What we as individuals often find difficult is to locate the path that allows us to ‘agree to disagree’ without creating factions, dissension and hurt feelings.

When there is a matter that creates disagreement or dispute we can handle

it in one of two ways – argue for the sake of arguing and creating unrest and dissention, or argue with the aim of creating a positive outcome. We are offered an insight into this in Pirkei Avos Chap 5:20 -

“Any dispute which is for the sake of Heaven, will in the end endure.

Any dispute which is not for the sake of Heaven, will not endure.”

Which is a dispute that is for the sake of Heaven? The disputes of the sages Hillel and Shammai. And which is the dispute that is not for the sake of Heaven? The dispute of Korach and his entire congregation.

The Midrash Shmuel explains that when differing opinions are presented respectfully, this allows for clarification of ideas until the truth emerges. The opposing sides act in partnership with the sole interest of the truth being revealed about the questions or doubts that initially arose, allowing for the eventual formation of consensus and for the ‘particular bit of truth to come into the light of the world’ and be preserved for posterity. This is considered a dispute for the sake of Heaven.

Contrary to this, we learn that when individuals engage in dispute to create altercation or to be provocative, their contention will not endure as their actions are not for the sake of Heaven and there is no truth at risk.

In this week’s Parshah we see that this was the nature of the dispute of Korach and his entire congregation, whose sole

purpose of rebellion was to cause a rift between B’nei Yisroel. Such was the destructive quality of Korach’s intentions so that unlike any other occasion of unrest, Hashem commanded B’nei Yisroel to ‘separate yourselves from these people’.

Rashi suggests that Korach’s unity was imbedded in controversy and when this is the case there is no real unity and there is no ‘L’Shaim Shamayim”. On close analysis it further becomes evident that Moshe did not enter into dispute with Korach who created argument and divisiveness for his own purpose, and that it was a one sided dispute. Reb Elimelech of Lizhnesk said that when a group or individual attacks its own leaders and teachers, it is a clear sign that its intentions are not for the sake of Heaven.

As parents and educators, we can show our children and students how to negotiate the ever-complex world we live in. By demonstrating the manner in which different opinions can be reconciled or respected, we show our children how to promote peace between people with opposing viewpoints. We provide them with the ability to make positive connections with those who think differently than we do and we help them understand that we all have the capacity to see another’s point of view.

Helping our children in this manner taking a positive lesson from our Parshah we will convert a story of rebellion and destruction into one of loving kindness.

I wish you all a very good Shabbos.

Year 7 ArtThe Year 7 students were required to use an old shoe as a base for designing a sculptural work of Art. Using a variety of materials including plaster, cardboard, wire and paint, their transformations were truly exceptional and included a version of “770”, fast food, a submarine, a soldier, a train and a beach. Here are just a few of the outstanding finished sculptures.

What to Do on Gimmel TammuzThis Shabbos marks the 24th anniversary of the passing of the Rebbe—Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. On the anniversary of a Tzaddik’s passing, all the light that he planted in this world - his teachings, good deeds, and everything in which he invested his life and being - all this shines brightly, so that anyone connected to him can receive blessings of life, happiness and wisdom.

How should we spend such a day? How do we make that connection?

Here are six simple suggestions:

Learn

Take the time to learn either alone or with a Chavrusah.

Pray

Before candle-lighting, light a 24-hour candle, as is customary on the anniversary of a close one’s passing.

Give

Partner with one of the Rebbe’s institutions, either at home or abroad, by giving Tzedokoh on Erev Shabbos.

Do

Check out the Ten Point Mitzvah Campaign that the Rebbe initiated. See how you can expand your involvement in any of those Mitzvahs. Encourage another Jew to do the same. As the

Rebbe would often say, any one Mitzvah can transform the entire world.

Write

Write a letter on Erev Shabbos, to be placed at the resting place of the Rebbe that day using the online form at chabad.org.

Spread the Word

Make a time to sit with your family and talk about the Rebbe, his accomplishments and his vision, and the mission he gave each one of us to prepare this world for the times of Moshiach.

YS ExamsThis week examinations were held in the Werdiger Family Hall for students in Year 7 - 11 in Jewish and General studies subjects. It was the Year 7 students' first experience of sitting for an examination in a formal setting and they are to be commended for their mature approach to this new and, for some, challenging experience.

Shluchim CornerThey huddled around the table, sitting close together to stay warm. It was a cold winter’s night, but the atmosphere inside was warm and uplifting. Everyone present was intensely focused on what the speaker was saying. From time to time, when they could no longer contain the overwhelming exuberance that was growing within them, they burst out with a joyous niggun. ....

No, this isn't a description from a Farbrengen many years ago in a dingy Russian basement with old Chassidim speaking Yiddish. It was last Motzei Shabbos at Yeshivah! Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but just a bit. There were two beautiful Farbrengens last Motzei Shabbos, as part of the Mivtzah Hachonoh for Gimmel Tammuz. Thank you R' Josh Wonder and R' Dovid Rachmani for Farbrenging with the boys.

Baruch Hashem the Mivtzah has created a storm at Yeshivah, with Kingston Pizza (at the time of this article's writing) taking the lead. Regardless of who actually wins the Mivtzah, many of the teams have really worked together and have encouraged each other to improve on their Hiskashrus. Whether it be through coming to Shiurim on Chitas and Rambam, or learning a Sicha at Seder Sichos, many students have really stepped up their game when it comes to fulfilling the Rebbe's directives and learning his teachings. We really hope this continues even after Gimmel Tammuz.

This Shabbos is Gimmel Tammuz. It marks 24 years since we last saw our Rebbe. A day like this should be used to reflect on our Hiskashrus, what it means to us, and how we can improve it. Hopefully, really soon, we will be reunited with the Coming of Moshiach.

Have a good Shabbos ,

Year 5 Amazing Asian ExpoOn Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, parents bustled in and out of the Year 5 classrooms visiting the annual Asian Expo, where students showed their Asian work and pieces of art.

My friends and I were huddled in a line waiting for the play to begin. Smiles shining brightly, each girl recited their part in our play called “The Seven Chinese Brothers” (a Chinese folktale). The parents laughed at the humorous jokes and clapped when the play was done.

Shani Zeman

On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning year 5 had an Asian expo for all family and friends to come and see all the work year 5 had put into term 1 and 2. Year 5 put on an annual display of classwork relating to Asia and its many countries and cultures.

The expo began with some girls chosen to introduce the audience to the play which was called The 7 Chinese Brothers. This ancient Chinese folktale had a message of if you work together you are unstoppable.

When that was concluded, girls went to their booths and shoed their PowerPoints, brochure and much more, we had prepared for our family and friends.

In my opinion the Asian expo was a success and everyone enjoyed it, well at least I did. I believe that the Asian expo was a great opportunity for the children and adults to learn about Asia and their culture.

Spigler Family Wing OpeningOn Monday was the official opening of the Primary School Wing. It was a beautiful morning. Thank you to our generous donors who brought this dream into fruition. Thank you to Morah Elana, Jaclyn, music ensemble and Year 4 Choir for their delightful and professional performance for the opening of our new building.

Thank you also to the secondary catering students and to our Year 6 Ushers and Morning Tea helpers for graciously and courteously greeting dignitaries and guests and serving morning tea at the opening ceremony.

Year 6 CampYear 6 Camp was a resounding success. The girls began their day where they enjoyed the challenge of 1000 steps. Later they were inspired by the Power of words, created fashion pieces for the newspaper fashion show, had a delicious dinner complete with Dvar Torah, serial story and joyful singing. Other exciting activities included barn dancing, bonfires with roasted marshmallows, canoeing grass sports and super swooper.

Year 7 2019 OrientationMrs Yamit Glasman, Head of Students

Last Wednesday evening BRS was excited to host our Year 7 2019 cohort for the first of their orientation experiences on this side of Empress Street. The girls rushed in punctually to claim their student handbooks before being addressed by the evening’s presenters. Head of Secondary, Mrs Beruria Tenenbaum opened the evening with a relatable dvar Torah from Parshat Shelach, drawing a comparison between the spies and their opportunity to scout out Eretz Yisrael and the girls being invited to ‘check out’ Secondary School. Mrs Tenenbaum, Mrs Cowen and Mrs Glasman spoke about student independence and autonomy, how to navigate the

timetable, subject and elective choices within the Middle Years Program, rules and policies and the wonderful extracurricular activities BRS has on offer.

Families were then invited to rotate through a series of ‘subject stations’ where various interactive activities were showcased, depicting areas of study that the students will encounter in Year 7.

The girls made a fantastic impression with their positivity, manners and endless enthusiasm. Special thanks to the Primary School staff and administration for clearly doing such a remarkable job educating and guiding the girls to date. We look forward to continuing the chinuch journey and await hosting them again in November for their full orientation day experience.

Year 7 Hospitality Taster ProgramThe Year 7 students have been busy using their skills in planning and preparing dishes for the opening of the new Beth Rivkah Primary Wing which was held on Monday.

Gimmel Tammuz CommemorationOn Friday, Year 7 to 10 students spent some time in commemoration of Gimmel Tammuz. In keeping with the legacy of the The Lubavitcher Rebbe to share Torah with other Jews, students and staff engaged in activities where both were able to share with others in their Torah learning. They demonstrated the concept of “knowing an Alef and teaching an Alef ”. Students across the year levels paired up and taught/learned a teaching of the Rebbe on Parshat Korach. Teachers presented engaging workshops on different ‘Why?’ questions in Yiddishkeit, which students were able to choose from and attend sessions of interest. Students were also fortunate to hear words of inspiration from Rabbi Yossi Chazan. At the conclusion of the activities, students received a checklist explaining the customs of this special day. Year 11-12 participated in a special all-day conference, details of which will be in next week’s newsletter.

Five students from the Year 10 Sport & Recreation elective were recently awarded the Royal Life Saving award of Bronze Medallion. Mazel tov to Racheli Baker, Emma Budin-Slabe, Yael Franck, Fraidy Raskin and Talia Schachna. Well done also to Nil Bahar who was present for some of the Water Safety sessions and gained valuable information and skills during this time.

Students participated in theory and practical sessions to develop survival skills such as using a Personal Flotation Device and stroke correction in preparation for a timed swim of 400m within 13 minutes. The course also covered rescue principles and techniques including reaches, throws and tows to bring a weak or injured swimmer to safety. Students practised new skills in the water and reviewed First Aid procedures in preparation for their final assessment.

Pnimi updateMrs Mushka Krasnjanski, Pnimi Coordinator

Session 2 of the Pnimi Program is off to a powerful start with girls creating “a new norm” for themselves through doing the same things daily and turning them into good habits. In addition, last week we had had a designated “Menchlichkeit day” which focused on being respectful to parents, teachers and peers. Teachers and parents have shared their appreciation for the difference they already see in the Pnimi girls in this area. Thank you to the family of Perry Wolf (year 8) for sponsoring the Nush n Niggun and Cocoa for the soul for this session. The girls have been enjoying learning a new niggun each week and starting their day Thursdays with a dose of inspiration. In other exciting news – were gearing up for the Session1 prize this Monday at 5:45 in the Princess Park Pavilion. The girls who completed the first session have all invested themselves and worked hard and the night is set to recognize and reward that with great program, dairy desserts and entertainment.

Year 8 Youth Alcohol Program - Visit from a RepresentativeTali Reuben and Yael Bloom

Students in Year 8 had a visit from a representative from the Youth Alcohol Program, on the risk of drinking alcohol underage. There were two programs; the first which described the effect the alcohol has on a developing brain, and the second which discussed problems created by peer pressuring others.

The key theme mentioned in the first discussion was the fact that when someone has drunk over their limit the alcohol sticks to the neural receivers and blocks pathways. It impairs peoples’ ability to think straight, feel pain and stay balanced. When drunk, reactions are slow. This is why driving after drinking is such an important issue. The second discussion talked about the effects of peer pressure, which starts from the age two, when a child can start to understand social signals, peer pressure begins. This affects everyday things such as sleeping patterns, eating habits and general behavior.

However, when talking about teenager years, peer pressure is most commonly associated with alcohol and drugs. The Youth Alcohol Program was an enjoyable experience, and did a great job on educating us on the dangers of alcohol and persuasion.

From the ShluchotRivka and Raizel

School has been very quiet this week with all of you taking your exams. It must be such a relief to have them all over! We hope you enjoyed our treats. Now, it’s time for the end of Term Celebrations, and very very sadly, our goodbyes. But have no fear, Winter Camp is near and for you lucky ones who are joining us, we can’t wait to spend the extra few days with you. Don’t forget to sign up for the Gimmul Tammuz Event this Motzei Shabbos at 7:30pm in the Erdi Performing Arts.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Opening of The Spigler Family Wing

Spigler Family Wing Opens at Beth Rivkah Lisa Frenkel, Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah Marketing and Communications

The official opening of the new Beth Rivkah Primary building – The Spigler Family Wing – was an interactive delight of STEM demonstrations, coupled with a warm welcome to mark the occasion. The Queen’s birthday public holiday provided the perfect opportunity for over 300 donors, staff members, Rabbonim, parents, alumni, grandparents, community members, Government and Council officials to flock to the impressive new building for a guided tour and the official unveiling of the new facilities, whilst enjoying a morning tea prepared by our very own Culinary Arts students.

Taking place in the new state-of-the-art ‘Loti & Victor Smorgon Family Library’, the morning’s events opened with an instrumental prelude from the talented Beth Rivkah Primary Ensemble, followed by Rabbi Yehoshua Smukler, Principal of Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah Colleges, welcoming the guests and expressing the school’s appreciation for the generous donors and Federal Government grant that have made this new wing possible. He noted, “This building is a true partnership of school, government and community support, it enables us to keep our ‘open door’ policy and to continue to empower more students with a better future.”

Opening of The Spigler Family WingRabbi Smukler outlined the significance of the day, stating that “on this day 77 years ago, 28 Sivan 1941/ 5701… the Rebbe and his wife escaped Nazi-occupied France and arrived in America… [where they became] involved in the leadership of 3 organisations… one being Merkos L’iyunei Chinuch – promoting the importance of Jewish education. [With this new building] we can expand on this tradition, and expand our school that was founded and guided by him.”

Attendees heard inspirational and heartfelt messages from major donors and Senator James Paterson, representing the Australian Federal Government. From the Spotlight Foundation, Morry Fraid AM and Vivienne Fried addressed the attendees as donors of the Roth floor that has been dedicated in memory of Mrs Marianne Roth (Vivienne’s late mother). The Fried and Fraid families have had a long and close association with YBR – for Morry’s late brother Rueben Fried it was a relationship going back 62 years when he was in Rabbi Groner’s Gemorah class. Supporting Jewish education has always been a focus for the family, and Morry highlighted his “strong emotional attachment to the school” and his passion for promoting Jewish education. He expressed that “it is an honour to partner in this endeavour with the Spigler family” and that he was so glad to be able “to honour the former matriarchs of our family” [with this building] – honouring his mother’s dedication and commitment to education. Vivienne Fried expressed that she was “honoured to have this named after [her] mother”, and reflected on her mother’s deep passion for education - in particular her love of art – and she outlined the lengths her mother went to in order to attain an education. Marianne’s career as a teacher for many years allowed her to pursue her passion and in later years Marianne took “great joy in helping students with their Art folios” and sharing her love of painting with others.

Mia Eckstein and Goldie Marcus – Year 6 Beth Rivkah students – presented Morry and Vivienne with gifts to show the school’s appreciation for their involvement and contribution in this endeavour.

Senator James Paterson, in attendance to represent the Government’s contribution to the building, took to the floor and noted that there is “something special and unique about opening this school building”. He commented that “it is a tribute to the Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah community [that] the vast majority of funds raised to construct the new building were raised from the school community, philanthropists and donors.” He highlighted Beth Rivkah as a “wonderful example of passion and dedication to education”, with its outstanding academic results and its focus of passing on Jewish values to the next generation. Further, he praised YBR, stating “Rabbi Smukler, you and your school have much to be proud of ”.

Representing the YBRSL board, Chairperson Dr Shana Reuben presented gifts of appreciation to Senator Paterson on behalf of the Australian Government, and Belinda Bardas in her capacity as Head of Philanthropy at Victor Smorgon Charitable Fund.

A moving and heartfelt address from Saul Spigler expressed his joy at being a partner in the building and outlined his longstanding support of and connection to the Colleges – with this being his 60th year of association with the Colleges. He recognised the original founders of the community and those who influenced his life. On behalf of himself and his wife he dedicated the building in memory of their parents Kalman and Rochel Spigler A”H and Harry and Betty Rubinstein A”H – who were “inspiring role models of how to lead a Jewish life, how to build and make your own success and to put the less fortunate before yourself ”. He outlined the “tremendous impact that [their] belief and dedication to Jewish continuity and Jewish education had on [their] families…” and that “the 3 generations now involved in Yeshivah would bring enormous nachas” to his and Beverly’s parents.

“We hope their memories and legacy will live on and be an inspiration to many who will learn and grow in this building”. He complimented the schools on providing education standards and educators of such a high calibre and commented that he is “proud and happy” that his family can assist. To express hakaras hatov (gratitude) Beth Rivkah Year 1 student Layla Spigler, Saul and Beverly’s granddaughter, presented them with a thank you gift on behalf of the school.

Opening of The Spigler Family WingDuring the event a morning tea was enjoyed by guests, with several dishes expertly prepared by our Year 9 and 10 Culinary Arts students. In addition, students in Year 6 and 7 were instrumental in assisting on the day by ushering guests, waiting upon them and presenting gifts during the formalities.

Beth Rivkah’s new wing will take learning at Beth Rivkah Primary to new heights – with the four storey construction encompassing state-of-the-art classroom facilities, library hub, makerspace, STEM centre and breakaway spaces. Learning for students from Foundation to Year 6 will be enhanced by the exceptional new facilities – with robotics, coding and STEM classes that will empower students to take risks, encourage broad thinking, develop communication skills and advance students’ collaborative abilities. The new building is a space for exploration and learning, for creativity and discovery and we hope students will use the facilities to their full potential.

Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah wishes to extend our sincere gratitude to all donors, contributors and the Australian Federal Government for making this dream a reality!

Bentleigh Transport Service Expressions of InterestWe are very pleased to report that the Bentleigh transport service resumed for students in Term Two for afternoon pick up and drop off. We are gathering

expressions of interest for a School Bus to pick up students in Bentleigh before School and drop off students after School. Please note we have very limited spots available for the afternoon service.

What have our parents be saying about the Bentleigh Bus: “The Bentleigh Bus is a life saver!”

If you live in the Bentleigh or Moorabbin area and would be interested in this service, please contact Michelle Blutman - [email protected]

The Werdiger Jewish Education Assistance GrantIn 2007, in honour of their father, Nathan Werdiger’s A’H 80th birthday, the Werdiger Family established the Werdiger Jewish Education Assistance Grant. Just as his children were given the opportunity to attend Jewish day schools, he wanted to assist other families in providing their children with a Jewish education. The fund offers grants to families who are committed to sending their children to a Jewish school, despite a financial difficulty associated with school fees. Since 2007 the Werdiger Family Jewish Education Assistance Grants have assisted nearly 200 children to attend an orthodox Jewish day school.

We are privileged, at Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah Colleges, to be able to offer this grant to our parents for 2019. Applications must be submitted to me by 29th June. If you would like to discuss the criteria, or would like to apply for the grant, please contact me via email at:[email protected] or via phone on 9528 8333.

YBR Colleges, the Rebbe’s Legacy and the new Spigler Family WingBy Rabbi Yehoshua Smukler, Principal Yeshivah - Beth Rivkah Colleges

3540 years ago, in the year 2238, Yaakov Avinu sent his son Yehuda ahead of his family, down to Egypt where they were going to live due to famine. In Bereishit, Perek 46 Pasuk 28 it says:

ף להורת.“ ח לפניו אל־יוס ה של ואת־יהודיו גשנה And Yosef sent Yehuda – לפנahead…. to set up Goshen”, which was to become the Jewish neighbourhood. Rashi explains he was setting up a Torah academy, i.e. first formal school set up for the Jewish nation.

This week we had the tremendous zechus of opening what will be our single largest building of learning spaces across our schools – the Spigler Family Wing. The opening auspiciously took place on the 28th of Sivan, the day on which, 77 years ago in 5701 - 1941, the Rebbe and the Rebbetzin arrived on the shores of America. Due to the extreme efforts of the Frierdiker Rebbe, they managed to escape Nazi occupied France and travel on land through Portugal and across Spain to catch a ship which was attacked and torpedoed numerous times.

Finally, after a perilous journey, the Rebbe and Rebbetzin arrived in NY. The Frierdiker Rebbe immediately appointed his extremely capable son in law to the leadership of three major organisations within the Chabad Lubavitch movement. One of them was Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch – the educational branch of Chabad. Thus it is opportune that we merited to open this wonderful facility and expand our school, continuing a Jewish tradition of education over 3500 years old, on the very day that the founder and namesake of our school, the Frierdiker Rebbe, Reb Yosef Yitzchak, appointed the Rebbe to the educational branch of Chabad and under whose

guidance and auspices our school has flourished and grown.

As we commemorate the anniversary of the passing of the Rebbe this Shabbos, the 3rd of Tammuz, and the 10th Yahrzetit of Rabbi YD Groner A’H on Sunday, the 4th of Tammuz, we are confident that they are looking down at our institutions with great joy and nachas and blessing all of our endeavours. They see a school that has grown, a school that is true to its mission, catering to the broad range of Jewish families across Melbourne; families from all levels of religious involvement and affiliation, and families that span the socio-economic spectrum, ensuring that a Jewish education is accessible to all children and that no one should miss out due to affordability.

We are a humble school, yet we are proud of our outstanding offerings and results. The Jewish pride, learning and powerful Jewish identity that our students are inculcated with; the Jewish and Australian values of menchlechkeit, mateship, respect and community instilled in all our students, and our exceptional General Studies programs and outcomes ensure that we are truly empowering our students to pursue any path they choose in life, and in doing so, creating a better future for themselves.

This week we truly celebrated living in a society and a country as wonderful as Australia where a school can partner with Government and our extremely generous community donors to enable our mission to continue to be fulfilled, to keep our doors open to all, and to educate and empower a growing number of Jewish children. Our humblest Hakaras Hatov – gratitude and appreciation, goes to all our supporters and benefactors. May our school be bestowed the Bracha to continue to grow מחיל אל חיל - from strength to strength in the quality and quantity of all our educational offerings & endeavours, and we should be zocheh to bring Moshiach now.

Wishing you all a good Shabbos.
