"And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ has also forgiven you." Ephesians 4:32

Happy “Love” Month …

I’m sure many of you know the Frank Sinatra tune “Love & Marriage.” Well, the first verse sums it up for us;

Love and marriage, love and marriage They go together like a horse and carriage This I tell you, brother You can't have one without the other

As I was preparing my calendar for the New Year, moving important meetings and ministry opportunities into the pages of 2019, I realized I already have five weddings to officiate and two more that are waiting for details to unfold. Love is certainly in the air! One of the things that Kendra and I enjoy doing is meeting with the couples for marriage counseling. We invite them into our home for dinner, fellowship and review of the pre-marriage inventory. It’s an opportunity to get to know the couples more intimately and decipher what makes them tick! We use a marriage inventory program called SYMBIS (Saving Your Marriage Before it Starts) and it details many interesting facts about the couple prior to making that covenant before God, family and friends.

I’m sure you all know the Energizer Bunny, right? He is the famous pink mascot and marketing icon for Energizer batteries. That little rabbit, with his sunglasses, beats a bass drum … and he never stops. He just keeps going and going and going. As I think about meeting with our couples, I think, “Wouldn’t it be nice if marriages were like that? Wouldn’t it be nice if, when you tied the knot, it wasn’t a slipknot?” The sad truth is that tons of marriages don’t seem to last as long as an Energizer battery and the statistics regarding marriage failures continue to climb upward, hovering around 50%.

& Marriage

My heart breaks when I hear of a marriage that I performed has resulted in separation or worse, divorce. When I do a wedding, one of the things that Kendra and I stress is if they are having struggles, don’t become a statistic, but rather reach out to us for counseling and help! Divorce should not be an option. As Ruth Graham once said, “I never considered divorcing Billy. Murder, yes, but not divorce." She was obviously kidding about the latter. Without question, if you want to have a good and lasting marriage, one that keeps going and going and going, getting better and better and better as time marches on, there is one big requirement. It is the word forgiveness. What is the source of all the problems in marriage relationships? It is simple. Guys, you married a sinner ... and she married a bigger one! When you get two sinners together, there will be fireworks, disagreements, hurt feelings, and the need to seek forgiveness and grant forgiveness.

1. Seek Forgiveness. When you do something dumb, selfish, and hurtful, be quick to take full responsibility and humbly and genuinely apologize. Don’t go to bed until you make right those things you made wrong. A good maxim to live by in your relationship with the Lord and your spouse: “When you mess up, fess up.” Spit on your pride and your rights. Be quick to seek forgiveness for your sins and your failures.

2. Grant Forgiveness. When your feelings have been hurt, don’t hold on to the hurt. Let it go. Even if your spouse does not seek forgiveness, grant it to him/her. Every hurt eventually turns to anger and unresolved anger turns to bitterness and resentment. God’s Word is clear, “Do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity” (Ephesians 4:26-27). Talk through problems, hurts, and issues in the marriage. Don’t let molehills turn into mountains. Give your hurts to God and refuse to live in resentment and un-forgiveness.

February is the ‘love’ month, a time for us to celebrate the love we have for those special people in our lives. It’s not just for couples though. In your friendships, relationships, or your marriage, make it your goal to be kind, tender-hearted, and forgiving. If you are married and thinking of throwing in the towel, call me before you do anything you may regret. God is the God of love, might and miracle. Seek Him and He will infuse your relationships with life, love, and laughter.

Celebrating love with you …

Pastor Jim (and Kendra too!)

Women’s Ministry News I would like to extend a thank you to the all the ladies that came out to the January meeting to help clean and reorganize the kitchen and the storage closet. It is true that “many hands, make light work”. Women's Ministry will meet on Saturday, February 9th at 10 am in the Fellowship Room. We will have our Secret Sis Reveal followed by a video Bible Study with discussion on "RUTH- Staying Focused in a World of Distractions". We will begin our fundraiser of selling Con Yeager Spices during the months of February and March to support the Youth Mission Trip this summer. Order forms are available in the Meet and Greet area. Completed forms may be returned to the Welcome Center accompanied by a check made out to St. Peter's Women's Ministry. Order deadline is March 31st. Your spice order will be available for pick up at the church in the Meet and Greet Area in about 3 weeks. Blessings, Marla Clouse

Spice Up Your Life!

It’s time to weed out all those decades-old spices and replace them with fresh, quality spices. During the months of February and March, Women’s Ministry is having a Con Yeager Spice Fundraiser to raise money for the Youth Mission Trip this summer.

There are order forms available in the Meet and Greet area with prices listed for each item offered. Feel free to take an order form home and take inventory, then return it to the Welcome Center. Checks should be made payable to “St. Peter’s Women’s Ministry” and accompany your order. Order deadline is March 31. About three weeks later, your order will be ready to be picked up at the church.

Help the church support our youth as you add spice to your life!

Volunteer Ministry News

From the pen of Pam

SPOTLIGHT ON: St. Peter's Singers If you came to our worship services on December 2 and Christmas Eve, you were privileged to hear two wonderful songs of the season sung by members of our newest music ministry! The idea for St. Peter's Singers came from Kate Konyak back in the spring of last year. Kate was interested in bringing musicians together to be part of a small vocal ensemble that would primarily do acapella, but also sometimes accompanied, music. Under the auspices of the Ministry and Worship Committee, Kate put together eight musicians who began rehearsing in the fall and their time together resulted in them achieving a remarkably blended sound as well as capturing the style of each of these two great songs ('Mary, Did You Know?' and 'Shout for Joy, Mary Had a Baby'), something that small ensembles don't usually arrive at so quickly or easily. As they sang for the Lord's glory, their music really enhanced those two worship services. We thank Kate for acting on her brainchild and bringing together the rest of the group, which, in addition to herself, includes Jen Bowers, Taryn Zeigler (mom Heather filled in for her on Christmas Eve), Betty Kraynik, Vance Williams, Keith Stauffer, Bryan Kraynik, and Scott McMaster. The ensemble hopes to be able to sing in church on a quarterly basis, and we will be more than ready to be blessed by their musical offerings when we hear from them again!! SPOTLIGHT ON: Women's Ministry The mission statement for St. Peter's Women's Ministry reads as follows: 'To show Christ's love to others through selfless serving and fellowshipping together as Christian women as we use our gifts and talents to further build God's kingdom at St. Peter's and beyond.' Undoubtedly, this ministry, under the leadership of Marla Clouse, lives out its mission statement in many and various ways every year, and both inside and outside our church walls people continue to be touched and blessed by this special group of women! Each month Marla writes an informational article for the newsletter and the congregation is also made aware of what the ministry is doing through timely bulletin and video announcements. My purpose in writing about the ministry this month is just to share what a great beginning to this year those who were present at January's meeting had when, of all things, the time that day was devoted to thoroughly cleaning and reorganizing the Fellowship Room kitchen and the storage closet. In addition to Marla and myself, the women who attended the meeting (Judy Double, Debbie Evans-Kanell, Sally Hamilton, Lynn Meyers, Kay O'Neill, Cathy Ratay, Joan Schiever, and Ginni Smoke) made what could have been a time of drudgery (and certainly not a very exciting way to spend a Saturday morning) a time of productivity and fun, and the more than two hours we spent together didn't seem to be all that long! From having Joan on the step ladder in the kitchen to having Cathy, Judy, and Ginni wading through things in the storage closet, we all had some task to accomplish and lots of progress was made, even though there were things we still didn't have time to finish. I think God had to be pleased with the end result because He saw sisters-in-Christ working together in a spirit of unity - some people could do more than others, some people moved faster than others, but we all contributed and we really enjoyed ourselves in the process! I encourage you to read Marla's article for this month and the months to follow and you will find that Women's Ministry will be doing all kinds of different service projects or hosting social events this year, all of which are geared to living out their mission statement. And remember this - if you are a woman who attends St. Peter's, you are already a member of Women's Ministry. You can come regularly (the normal monthly meetings are held the second Saturday morning of each month in the Fellowship Room from 10:00-12:00) or just come when you can! You can also contact Marla (724-772-5595) or Pam at the church office (724-452-8120) if you would like any more information or have any questions.

LIBRARY HIGHLIGHTS FOR FEBRUARY - READ ALL ABOUT IT!!!! Are you ready for some fabulous February fiction finds?? Listed below are the book jacket blurbs for four new additions to our church library: 1) "Petticoat Detective" (Book one in the 'Undercover Ladies' ser ies by Margaret Brownley): 'Pinkerton detective Jennifer Layne has a past full of identities, but posing as a lady companion named Amy at Miss Lillian's Parlor House and Boots in Goodman, Kansas, is a first for her. Amy's current assignment has her on the trail of the notorious Gunnysack Bandit, when one of Miss Lillian's girls - Amy's best hope for a lead - meets an untimely demise. Former Texas Ranger Tom Colton has every reason to distrust the green-eyed beauty at Miss Lillian's who calls herself Amy. Determined to clear his brother's name, he's convinced she knows more than she lets on, and he means to find out what it is. As Amy's investigation continues, her biggest problem is Tom and his stolen kiss. The closer she gets to tracking down the outlaw, the harder it is to keep Tom from finding out the awful truth about his brother. The Gunnysack Bandit she can handle, but it will take a whole lot of faith and a little help from Miss Lillian and her girls to snag the man who stole her heart.' 2) "In Dreams Forgotten" (Book two in the 'Golden Gate Secrets' ser ies by Tracie Peterson): 'Judith Gladstone came to San Francisco after her parents died to find her last living relative, an aunt she never knew she had. Instead she has fallen head over heels in love with Caleb Coulter, her friend's brother. Caleb has promised to help Judith find her aunt, but she can tell he thinks of her only as a friend, and she struggles to hide her feelings whenever she is with him. When Caleb traces Judith's aunt to the wealthy Whitley family, Judith is united with her long-lost relatives. The truths she learns about her past and her parents are shocking and overwhelming, however, and the more she gets to know her new family, the more danger she uncovers. Someone feels threatened by Judith's appearance in the Whitleys' lives, and they will do whatever it takes to get rid of her.' 3) "In Times Gone By" (Book three in the 'Golden Gate Secrets' ser ies by Tracie Peterson): 'After getting left at the altar, Kenzie Gifford flees to San Francisco to start her life over, determined never to love again. She's made new friends and has a good job in the office of her cousin's chocolate factory. The only thorn in her side is Dr. Micah Fisher, who insists on pursuing her despite her constant resistance. Then the Great Earthquake of 1906 strikes the city and everything changes. The devastation all around her makes Kenzie re-evaluate her outlook on life - and possibly even her feelings for Micah. Her world is rocked again when her ex-fiancé appears, determined to win her back. But Arthur has already broken her heart once - does she dare trust him again? The sudden arrival of a hidden danger will expose the motivations of all involved, but it could cost Kenzie her heart - and her life.' 4) "The Traitor's Wife" (A r iveting histor ical novel about Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America's most infamous act of treason, by Allison Pataki): 'Everyone knows Benedict Arnold - the Revolutionary War general who betrayed America and fled to the British - as history's most notorious turncoat. Many know Arnold's co-conspirator, Major John Andre, who was apprehended with Arnold's documents in his boots and hanged at the orders of General George Washington. But few know of the integral third character in the plot - a charming young woman who not only contributed to the betrayal but orchestrated it. Socialite Peggy Shippen is half Benedict Arnold's age when she becomes involved with the war hero during his stint as military commander of Philadelphia. Blinded by his young bride's beauty and wit, Arnold does not realize that she harbors a secret - loyalty to the British. Nor does he know that she hides a past romance with the handsome British spy John Andre. Peggy watches as her husband, crippled from battle wounds and in debt from years of service to the colonies, grows ever more disillusioned with his hero, Washington, and the American cause. Together with her former love and her disaffected husband, Peggy hatches the plot to deliver West Point to the British and, in exchange, win fame and fortune for herself and Arnold. Told from the perspective of Peggy's maid, whose faith in the new nation inspires her to intervene in her mistress's affairs even when it could cost her everything, this novel brings these infamous figures to life, illuminating the sordid details and the love triangle that nearly destroyed the American fight for freedom.'

Continued ~ Library Highlights

February is our shortest month, but you can pack a lot of reading enjoyment into your days with either these selections or many others, both fiction and non-fiction, when you come to our library and 'check things out!' And for those of you who have signed up for our recent book club, it will be great when we get together on February 24th to discuss all that we have gleaned from reading Pastor Louis Giglio's book "Goliath Must Fall". Thanks to Heather Zeigler for organizing this wonderful opportunity for everyone who likes not just reading and discussing good books from our church library, but also having great fellowship together!
