INT O T ON

What is the Forum of Young Global Leaders?

The Forum of Young Global Leaders is a unique, mul -stakeholder community of more than 700 excep onal young leaders who share a commitment to shaping the global future.

Young Global Leaders represent the future of leadership, coming from all regions of the world and represen ng business, government, civil society, arts & culture, academia and media, as well as social entrepreneurs. The Young Global Leader pla orm helps ensure the voices of individual members carry more weight during debates on the future of humankind. The World Economic Forum YGL has become a global brand represen ng exper se and responsibility that opens doors and minds. However, the fact that the forum is a network for communal ac on is even more important.

In a nutshell: They are the leaders of the next genera on. Their “term of offi ce” lasts fi ve years, and last year saw the fi rst intake graduate in Geneva.

Who can be a Young Global Leader?

Nominated under the age of 40, these young leaders are proposed through a qualifi ed nomina on process and assessed according to rigorous selec on criteria that create a diverse and truly representa ve body, while accep ng only the very best leaders who have already demonstrated their commitment to serving society at large.

Out of the thousands of candidates nominated each year, between 100 and 200 extraordinary individuals are honoured each year with the tle “Young Global Leader” at which me they are invited to become Ac ve Members and sign the YGL Charter of rights and responsibili es.

The role and concept of YGLs

The Young Global Leaders see their organiza on as a pla orm for personal learning experiences and greater public visibility (leading to a socially produc ve impact), and as a network for joint ac on. Everything serves a collec ve goal, which Klaus Schwab summarized at the

Page 6: Ygl Book Viii 23 (3)

organiza on’s inaugural mee ng in 2005 by asking: What can we do to make the world a be er place? Within the context of the YGLs, personal learning experiences ini ally involve learning from each other. The network is so diverse and rich in individual knowledge that, for prac cally every problem, there is an expert who has already produc vely tackled the issue. Inspira on for YGLs comes in the form of sharing ideas with other members. This includes when the network meets at regular workshops, organized as part of the mee ngs of the World Economic Forum in Davos, and the WEF regional forums. In a par cularly compact form, YGLs also share learning experiences at the start of their fi ve-year term, as part of an intense course in responsible leadership run by Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Why Mongolia?

A group of 30 YGLs started an ini a ve at the 2011 World Economic Forum in Davos with an objec ve to contribute to the development-related policy discussions in small developing countries. At Ganhuyag Ch. Hutagt’s invita on, YGLs formed an “YGL Panel to Advance Development” (YPAD) under the auspices of the Mongolian Prime Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar. YPAD conducted a fact-fi nding trip to Mongolia in March and par cipated in a discussion with the Mongolian Prime Minister in Jakarta in June. The mission of the Mongolia YPAD is to serve as a sounding board to Mongolian policy-makers and to organize events that contribute to the development of the country. YPAD has iden fi ed several key areas of focus for Mongolia, including natural resources, sustainability, risk management and repor ng, wealth and revenue management and fi nancial markets.

The up-coming YGL event will include unique mee ngs with senior government and business leaders to learn about Mongolia’s economic development prospects and social issues facing this Central Asian democracy, which was recently named as a top Global Growth Generator country. We envisage discussion sessions along YGL ini a ves. At the same me we hope to engage the YGLs in discussions on general topics including

public leadership, geo-poli cs, business and environment, social and economic development.
