IntroductionToday’s environmental and energy considerations demand innovative chiller plant designs whichsave expensive peak load kW hours and eliminate CFCs. In a growing number of applications withwaste heat or abundant low temperature hot water, single effect absorption chillers offer an idealmeans of saving on cooling costs without a significant installation cost penalty. That’s why Johnson Controls is proud to present the YHAU-CL/CH Single Effect Absorption Chiller. The YHAU-CL/CH Absorption Chiller offers a rugged, industrial grade design, with PLC-basedcontrols, designed to increase reliability and enhance performance.Applications particularly well suited for the YHAU-CL/CH Absorption Chiller include the following:Combined heat & power or cogeneration – For CHP systems, high pressure steam has manyvaluable uses, while low pressure hot water is considerably less useful, yet more plentiful. In theseplants, the YHAU-CL/CH absorber can provide cooling with low temperature hot water, freeing highpressure steam for power generation or other valuable uses.Waste heat recovery – Recover waste heat from industrial processes or gas engine jacket water toprovide required comfort or process cooling at little operational cost.Commercial cooling/peak shaving – For particularly pronounced peak loads with few operatinghours, the YHAU-CL/CH absorber’s lower first cost may provide an acceptable payback when moreefficient, yet more expensive double effect chillers cannot. For these and similar cost saving designs, consider the field proven YHAU-CL/CH design. In manyyears of operation, the single-effect design has proven itself in applications ranging from schools torefineries. Now, with state of the art controls and continual product improvement, the YHAU-CL/CHabsorption chiller is truly without peer. When it comes to absorption technology, there's only oneleader - Johnson Controls.

7YHAU-CL/CH Single Effect Hot Water Absorption Chiller (Mod A)

How it worksThe single effect (hot water driven) absorption chiller uses water as the refrigerant and lithiumbromide (LiBr) solution as the absorbent. It is the strong affinity that these two substances havefor one another that makes the chiller cycle work. The vapor pressure of the LiBr solution is lowerthan the vapor pressure of the refrigerant. The vapor pressure of the LiBr solution is directlyrelated to the amount of refrigerant (water) present in the solution with the LiBr and the solutiontemperature. The entire absorption process occurs in almost a complete vacuum.

Figure 1: Single effect hot water absorption cycle

YHAU-CL/CH Single Effect Hot Water Absorption Chiller (Mod A)8

Two step evaporator-absorberThe evaporator, as well as the absorber, is split into two sections. This design, similar to aseries counterflow chiller arrangement, provides an advantage in that it allows the overall cycleconcentration to be lower than a similar chiller with a conventional absorber/evaporator. Thisinnovative design provides higher reliability, increased efficiency, and the ability to use lowertemperature hot water in the generator. The two evaporators are in series with respect to the chilled water flow through the tubes. Thechilled water flows through the lower evaporator tubes first and then the upper evaporator tubes. Each evaporator operates at a slightly different temperature and pressure. The refrigerant in thelower evaporator boils at a slightly higher temperature than in the upper evaporator, consequentlycooling the chilled water in two steps. The two absorber sections are split as well, with the strongsolution first entering the top of the uppermost absorber and flowing down through the topabsorber bundle. It then flows into the top of the lower absorber section. The strong solutionentering the upper absorber takes advantage of its lower vapor pressure allowing the upperevaporator to operate at a lower pressure and temperature. When the LiBr solution enters the lower absorber section it is already somewhat diluted from therefrigerant vapor that boiled off in the upper evaporator. At this lower concentration the solutionvapor pressure would normally not be sufficient to provide a low enough evaporator pressureto satisfy the leaving chilled water design. However, since the lower evaporator is the first stepof the chilled water cooling, the dilute solution vapor pressure is adequate to maintain the lowerevaporator at the required temperature and pressure. The cooling water enters the lower absorber section first, keeping the vapor pressure of the weakersolution as low as possible.

Figure 2: Two step evaporator-absorber

Solution heat exchangerThe dilute (weak) LiBr solution leaving the lower absorber section is pumped to the generatorsection through a solution to solution heat exchanger. It is pre-heated before entering thegenerator section. Such pre-heating of the dilute solution reduces the driving heat sourcerequirement in the generator and also helps to cool down the concentrated (strong) solutionbefore entering the upper absorber section.

Figure 3: Solution heat exchanger

GeneratorThe generator section is of a falling film design. Such a design ensures substantially reduced wearand tear at the tube supports compared to the conventional flooded design. The falling film designensures superior heat transfer and extended tube life. It also reduces the quantity of LiBr solutionthereby ensuring reduced startup time from a cold start. The stainless steel tubes are arranged in aseries counter flow arrangement allowing for design with lower leaving hot water temperatures. The pre-heated dilute solution enters on the top of the generator tubes where it is heated by thehot water (driving heat source) flowing through the stainless steel tubes. The refrigerant (water)vapors migrate to the condenser, leaving behind a concentrated (strong) LiBr solution, which isthen cooled before being distributed in the upper absorber section using a solution pump.Figure 4: Generator

YHAU-CL/CH Single Effect Hot Water Absorption Chiller (Mod A)10

CondenserThe refrigerant vapor from the generator enters the condenser section where it condenses intoliquid refrigerant as a result of the cooling (condenser) water. The liquid refrigerant water is thendistributed to the lower evaporator section.Figure 5: Condenser

Equipment overview

GeneralThe YHAU-CL/CH Hot Water Single Effect Absorption Chillers are factory-packaged including theevaporator, condenser, generator, absorber, pumps, automatic purging system, control center, interconnecting unit piping, and wiring. The initial charge of solution and refrigerant is supplied for each chiller. Actual shipping procedureswill depend on a number of project-specific details.Johnson Controls factory-trained, field service representatives will supervise or perform the initialstart-up, and provide concurrent operator instructions.

ConstructionThe chiller consists of a generator, solution heat exchanger, absorber, condenser, and anevaporator. To minimize the risk of corrosion, the evaporator dispersion tray and the absorberdispersion tray are stainless steel. Each dispersion tray has two stage construction and any foreignmaterial is removed from the lithium bromide solution or the refrigerant at the first stage tray. Thiswill avoid any degradation of dispersion performance due to clogging. The evaporator, absorber, condenser, and generator are a shell and tube construction. The hotwater generator for YHAU-CL models is designed for 150 psig and air pressure tested to 160 psig, the high temperature hot water generator for YHAU-CH models is designed for 150 psig and airpressure tested to 160 psig according to ASME code requirement. A shell-side rupture disk arefurnished and set to burst at 12.0 psig, ± 2.0 psi.

The evaporator cycle and the absorber cycle consists of two steps (upper stage and lower stage). This technology makes the absorber solution concentration weak, extending the machine life.Furthermore, this technology makes the generator solution temperature lower than the ordinarychiller, which enables to utilize lowered hot water temperature as driving heat source. The hot water generator is a falling liquid film type. The plate-type solution heat exchanger preheats the diluted solution in order to achieve higherefficiency.

Tube materialsGenerator tubes are 0.032 in. wall stainless steel (CL: SUS436LTB; CH: SS32205) and allow for theremoval of the tubes from either end of the machine. Evaporator and absorber tubes are madeof low residual phosphorus deoxidized copper (C1201), finned type with a wall thickness beforefinning of 0.024 in. Condenser tubes are bare tubes and are made of 0.024 in. wall low residualphosphorus deoxidized copper (C1201).

WaterboxesWaterboxes are removable to permit tube cleaning and replacement, whereas absorber andcondenser waterboxes for CL/CH 630EXW2S(L) model or larger are of marine type. Water circuittubing are replaceable from either end of the absorption unit. All water boxes and associatedwater circuit nozzles and tube bundles are designed for 150 psig working pressure and airpressure tested to 160 psig. The high temperature hot water generator for YHAU-CH models isdesigned for 150 psig working pressure and air pressure tested to 160 psig according to ASME coderequirement. Vent and drain connections are provided on each waterbox. All the water connectionsare equipped with ANSI flanges. Mating flanges are not included. The inside of waterboxes andwaterbox covers are coated with epoxy resin paint, except for the generator.

Fully automatic decrystallization systemThe YHAU-CL/CH chiller is built with an anti-crystallization system. The absorber and the evaporatorare located side by side in the same shell and separated by the eliminator. When the concentrationof lithium bromide in the chiller goes up, the water level at the evaporator increases andautomatically spills over to the absorber. This causes the concentration of the solution at theabsorber to go down. When the solution temperature, pressure, or concentration of LiBr rises to each protection pointand the chiller-heater runs load limitation, the refrigerant blow solenoid valve opens automaticallyand dilutes the solution to prevent crystallization.

PumpsSolution and refrigerant pumps are hermetically sealed, self-lubricating, totally enclosed, factory-mounted, wired, and tested. Motor windings are not exposed to lithium bromide or water. Thesuction and discharge connections for each pump are fully welded to the unit piping to minimizethe opportunity for leaks. Suction and discharge connections are equipped with factory installedisolation valves (optional) to permit quick and easy servicing of pumps. Pumps are designed tooperate for a total of 60,000 hours. The parts in the pumps, such as bearings and sealing gaskets, are replaced every 20,000 hours.

Automatic purging systemThe chiller is equipped with a purging system to remove non-condensable gases from the unitduring operation. Non-condensables are collected by an eductor and accumulated in the purgetank. The chiller can dictate the pressure increase in the purge tank and automatically remove thenon-condensable gas through the operation of an electric vacuum pump. The purge pump is an oil rotary two stage design, and is furnished complete with a motor, and allrequired accessories. The purge pump is shipped mounted on the chiller and connecting hose isfactory installed. The purge pump oil is charged before delivery.

YHAU-CL/CH Single Effect Hot Water Absorption Chiller (Mod A)14

Lithium bromide and refrigerantLithium bromide contains lithium molybdate corrosion inhibitor to minimize the rate of ferrousmetal corrosion on both the solution and refrigerant sides of the unit. The solution and deionizedrefrigerant water is kept in the barrels and shipped with the chiller. They are charged at the fieldduring the commissioning.

Dry-shipmentThe solution and refrigerant water are kept in the barrels and shipped with the chiller. They arecharged at the field during the commissioning. The chiller is charged with N2 to 4.4 psig during thedelivery.

Hot water valveHot water absorption chillers are designed with a 3-way diverting type valve (DN≤6 in.) or twotwo-way valves (DN≥8 in.), with the actuator motor. This assembly is for field installation. Thevalve features a cast iron or carbon steel body. The hot-water control valve assembly is capable ofmodulating hot water flow continuously from approximately 20% to 100% of the maximum designchiller capacity into the chiller. The actuator motor is powered by the chiller’s control panel. The actuator motor position iscontrolled by the control panel through a 4-20 mA DC control signal. The hot water control valve is not in the factory scope. It must be sourced by the local JCI branchaccording to engineering specifications.

Control panelEach unit is furnished complete with a factory mounted and pre-wired control system. The controlpanel enclosure is equipped with a hinged access door with lock and key. The protection rating ofthe control panel is equivalent to IP42. All temperature sensors and other control devices necessaryto sense unit operating parameters are factory mounted and wired to panel. The control panelincludes a touch panel showing all system parameters in Chinese language with numeric data inmetric or imperial units. The operating program is stored in non-volatile memory (SRAM) to eliminate chiller failure due toAC power failure.Capacity control - The control panel automatically controls the input hot water flow rateto maintain the programmed leaving chilled water setpoint for cooling loads ranging fromapproximately 20% to 100% of design. The input hot water flow rate can also be manually adjustedfrom the control panel to any setting between minimum and maximum, when automatic operationis not desired and when hot water input is not being inhibited by a specific operating condition.

15YHAU-CL/CH Single Effect Hot Water Absorption Chiller (Mod A)

YHAU-CL/CH control centerThe YHAU-CL/CH control center, furnished as standard on each chiller, provides the ultimate inefficiency, monitoring, data recording, chiller protection and operating ease. The control centeris a factory-mounted, wired and tested state-of-the-art microprocessor based control system forlithium bromide absorption chillers. The panel is configured with a color display with keys that areintegrated into the display, which are redefined with one keystroke based on the screen displayedat that time. This revolutionary development makes chiller operation quicker and easier thanever before. Instead of requiring keystroke after keystroke to hunt for information on a smallmonochrome LCD screen, a single button reveals a wide array of information on a large, full-colorillustration of the appropriate component, which makes information easier to interpret. This is allmounted in the middle of a keypad interface and installed in a locked enclosure. The LCD display allows graphic animated display of the chiller, chiller sub-systems and systemparameters; this allows the presentation of several operating parameters at once. In addition, theoperator may view a graphical representation of the historical operation of the chiller as well as thepresent operation. A status bar is displayed at all times on all screens.Data can be displayed in imperial or metric units plus keypad entry of setpoints to 0.1 increments.Security access is provided to prevent unauthorized changes to setpoints. This is accomplished withthree different levels of access and passwords for each level. There are certain screens, displayedvalues, programmable setpoints and manual controls not shown that are for servicing the chiller. The following listing describes the various system screens and subscreens, and what informationthey provide.

Application dataThe following discussion is a guide for the application and installation of YHAU-CL/CH Single-EffectAbsorption Chillers to ensure reliable, trouble free life for which this equipment was designed. While this guide is directed towards normal water-chilling applications, your local Johnson Controlssales representative can provide complete recommendations on other types of applications.

LocationYHAU-CL/CH units make very little noise or vibration and may generally be located at any level in abuilding where the construction will support the total system emergency weight. The system location should provide sufficient space around the unit to permit tube removal, ifrequired. If a door or other large opening is conveniently located opposite one end of the system, the tubes may be extracted and replaced through these openings. Allow sufficient clearance on theremaining sides of the unit for necessary access and maintenance.Standard absorption chillers are not suitable for outdoor installation. The machine room must beenclosed, well lighted and properly ventilated to keep its temperature no higher than 104°F and nolower than 50°F.

Water circuitsFlow rate – For normal fluid chilling duty, the evaporator and absorber/condenser flow rates arepermitted at water velocity levels in the heat exchangers tubes of up to 10.9 ft/s.Under variable chilled fluid and cooling fluid flow conditions, special attention needs to be paid tothe rate of change of flow rate with time and the minimum/maximum velocities through the tubes. The chilled water and cooling water flow accept 50% to 120% designed flow. The hot water flowcan accept up to 110%. The recommended flow is the designed flow. The acceptable chilled watertemperature variation is within ± 0.9°F : 1.5% per minute; the acceptable cooling water temperaturevariation is 0.9F per minute. Applications involving chilled and cooling fluid flow rates which vary bymore than +20% from design will require special considerations on a case by case basis.Water quality – The practical and economical application of liquid chillers requires that thequality of the water supply for the evaporator and the absorber/condenser be analyzed by awater treatment specialist. Water quality may affect the performance of any chiller throughcorrosion, deposits of heat resistant scale, sedimentation or organic growth. These will hurt chillerperformance and increase operation and maintenance costs. Normally, performance may bemaintained by corrective water treatment and periodic cleaning of tubes. If water conditions existwhich cannot be corrected by proper water treatment, it may be necessary to provide a largerallowance for fouling, and/or specify special materials of construction.General water piping – All chilled water and cooling water piping must be designed and installedin accordance with accepted piping practice. Chilled water and cooling water pumps must belocated to discharge through the YHAU-CL/CH unit to ensure positive pressure and flow throughthe unit. Piping must include offsets to provide flexibility and must be arranged to preventdrainage of water from the cooler and condenser when the pumps are shut down. Piping must beadequately supported and braced independent of the chiller to avoid imposition of strain on chillernozzles and components. Hangers must allow for alignment of the pipe. Isolators in the piping andin the hangers are highly desirable in achieving sound and vibration control.Convenience considerations – With consideration given to facilitating the performance of routinemaintenance work, some or all of the following steps may be taken by the purchaser.Evaporator, absorber and condenser waterboxes are equipped with plugged vent and drainconnections.

21YHAU-CL/CH Single Effect Hot Water Absorption Chiller (Mod A)

If desired, vent and drain valves may be installed with or without piping to an open drain.Pressure gauges with stop cocks, and stop valves, may be installed in the inlets and outlets of thecooling and chilled water lines as close as possible to the chiller. An overhead monorail or beam hoist may be used to facilitate servicing.Connections – The standard unit is designed for 150 psig design working pressure in both thechilled and cooling water circuits. The connections (water nozzles) to these circuits are furnishedin accordance with ANSI flanges. Piping must be arranged for ease of disassembly at the unit forperformance of routine maintenance such as tube cleaning. All water piping must be thoroughlycleaned of all dirt and debris before final connections are made to the YHAU-CL/CH unit.Chilled water – The chilled water circuit uses a differential pressure switch as standard, factorymounted in the water nozzle connection and wired to the chiller control panel. A water strainer witha 10 mesh, must be field installed in the chilled water inlet line as close as possible to the chiller. Iflocated close enough to the chiller, the chilled water pump may be protected by the same strainer. The flow sensor and strainer ensure chilled water flow during unit operation. The loss or severereduction of water flow could seriously impair the YHAU-CL/CH unit performance or even result intube freeze up.Cooling water – Like the chilled water circuit, the cooling water circuit requires a means of provingflow. Low flow protection are provided by an optional differential pressure switch mounted in thewater nozzle connection and wired to the chiller control panel. The YHAU-CL/CH chiller is engineered for maximum efficiency at both design and part loadoperation by taking advantage of the colder cooling water temperatures which naturally occur inthe winter months. For standard air conditioning applications, YHAU-CL /CH absorbers can tolerateentering cooling water temperatures as low as 64.4°F without a cooling tower bypass. For process or critical applications which have strict requirements for leaving chilled watertemperatures, a three-way cooling tower bypass valve is recommended.

Control valvesThe automatic control valve is prepared by a JCI local team, and is mounted and wired on the field. The valve is electrically actuated and automatically closes on unit shutdown. The valve must belocated at the absorption unit generator hot water inlet.Automatic control valves are sized according to job specific full load hot water parameters.

Sound and vibration considerationsSince the YHAU-CL/CH unit generates very little vibration, vibration eliminating mounts are notrequired. However, when the machine is installed where even mild noise is a problem, rubber padscan be used.

Thermal insulationPerform thermal insulation on site for YHAU-CL/CH units on both hot and cold surfaces in order toachieve maximum efficiency and to prevent sweating.

Insulation1. The recommended materials and their thickness for hot insulation or cold insulation are

shown in Table 16

2. Use a bonding agent, iron wire, iron band, and so on, to fix the hot insulation/cold insulationmaterial. Never rivet them. The use of welding pins is not permitted.

3. Make the outer covering, flanged parts, and evaporator water chamber casing easilyremovable to facilitate servicing.

4. The points that require hot insulation or cold insulation are shown in Table 17. The casingof the absorber and the condenser water chamber does not require hot insulation or coldinsulation. If insulation is used, make it easy to remove.

ConstructionThe chiller consists of a generator, solution heat exchanger, absorber, condenser and anevaporator. To minimize the risk of corrosion, the evaporator dispersion tray and the absorberdispersion tray are stainless steel. The evaporator, absorber, condenser, and generator are a shell and tube construction. The hotwater generator for YHAU-CL models is designed for 150 psig and air pressure tested to 160 psig. The high temperature hot water generator for YHAU-CH models is designed for 150 psig and airpressure tested to 160 psig according to ASME code requirement. A shell-side rupture disk arefurnished and set to burst at 12.0 psig, +/- 2.0 psi.The evaporator cycle and the absorber cycle consists of two-stages (upper stage and lower stage). This technology makes absorber solution concentration weak, which enables to extend themachine life. Furthermore, this technology makes generator solution temperature lower than theordinary machine, which enables to utilize lowered hot water temperature as driving heat source. The hot water generator is falling liquid film type. The plate type solution heat exchanger is equipped to preheat the diluted solution and achievehigher efficiency. The unit is hermetically tight and built to very stringent standards. It operates under a bettervacuum, which improves performance and reliability ensuring design performance to GB/T18431-2014. Standard (2.03*10^-6 Pa*m3/s).

All water boxes and associatedwater circuit nozzles and tube bundles are designed for 150 psig working pressure and air pressuretested to 160 psig. The high temperature hot water generator for YHAU-CH models which isdesigned for 150 psig working pressure and air pressure tested to 160 psig according to ASMEcode requirement. Vent and drain connections are provided on each waterbox. All the waterconnections are equipped with ANSI flanges. Mating flanges are not included. Inside of waterboxesand waterbox covers are coated with epoxy resin paint, except the generator.

51YHAU-CL/CH Single Effect Hot Water Absorption Chiller (Mod A)

Automatic decrystallization systemThe chiller has an anti-crystallization system. The absorber and the evaporator are located side byside in the same shell and separated by the eliminator. When the concentration rate of LithiumBromide in the chiller goes up, the water level at the evaporator will increase and automatically spillover to the absorber and the concentration rate of the solution at the absorber will go down. When the solution temperature, pressure, or concentration of LiBr rises to each protection pointand the chiller-heater runs load limitation, the refrigerant blow solenoid valve opens automaticallyand dilutes the solution to prevent crystallization.

PumpsThe solution and refrigerant pumps are hermetically sealed, self-lubricating, totally enclosed,factory-mounted, wired and tested. Motor windings are not exposed to lithium bromide orwater. The suction and discharge connections for each pump are fully welded to the unit pipingto minimize the opportunity for leaks. Suction and discharge connections are equipped withfactory installed isolation valves (optional) to permit quick and easy servicing of pumps. The pumpdurability is designed to operate for a total of 60,000 hours. The parts of pumps such as bearingsand sealing gaskets are to be inspected every 20,000 hours and replaced depending on necessity.

Fully automatic purging systemThe chiller is equipped with a fully automatic purging system to remove non-condensable gasesfrom the unit during operation. Non-condensables are collected by an ejector and accumulated inthe purge tank. The chiller can dictate the pressure increase in the purge tank and automaticallyremove the non-condensable gas through the operation of an electric vacuum pump. The purge pump is an oil rotary two-stage design, and is furnished complete with a motor and allrequired accessories. The purge pump is shipped mounted on the chiller and connecting hose isfactory installed. The purge pump oil is charged before delivery.

Dry shipmentThe solution and refrigerant water is kept in the barrels and shipped with the chiller. They arecharged at the field during the commissioning. The chiller is charged with N2 to 4.4 psig duringdelivery.

Hot water valveHot water chillers are designed with a one 3-way diverting type valve (DN≤6 in.) or two 2-way valve(DN≥8 in.) with the actuator motor. This assembly is for field installation. The valve features a castiron or carbon steel body. The hot water control valve assembly is capable of modulating hot waterflow continuously from approximately 20% to 100% of the maximum design chiller capacity into thechiller. The actuator motor is powered from the chiller’s control panel. The actuator motor position iscontrolled through the control panel using a 4 mA to 20 mA DC control signal. The hot water control valve is not in the factory scope. It must be sourced by the local JCI branchaccording to engineering specifications.

Control panelEach unit is furnished complete with a factory mounted and pre-wired control system. The controlpanel enclosure is equipped with hinged access door with lock and key. Protection rating of thecontrol panel are IP42. All temperature sensors and other control devices necessary to sense unitoperating parameters to be factory mounted and wired to panel. The control panel includes a touchpanel showing all system parameters in various languages with numeric data in metric or imperialunitsThe operating program is stored in non-volatile memory (SRAM) to eliminate chiller failure due toAC power failure.Capacity control - The control panel automatically controls the input hot water flow rateto maintain the programmed leaving chilled water set-point for cooling loads ranging fromapproximately 20% to 100% of design. The input hot water flow rate can be manually adjustablefrom the control panel to any setting between minimum and maximum when automatic operationis not desired and when hot water input is not being inhibited by a specific operating condition.
