This project is in collaboration with Professor John Folan and students: Sandra Kalayan, Emily Punaty, Kyle Woltersdorf, Noelle White, Karno Widjaja, and Dan Quaintance.
The Urban Design Build Studio is a comprehensive studio that allows for the collaboration between students, professors, community members and organizations, municipal groups, contractors, and granting foundations; all working towards making socially-conscious urban architectural interventions for the betterment of the communities in which they are built.
The focus of the Fall and Spring term is the design and execu-tion of the C3: Community, Construction, and Cooperative. The C3 is about the social, educational, and business collaboration between Urban Design Build Studio, The Trade Institute of Pittsburgh, and Construction Junction.
The C3 workshop is housed in the Construction Junction ware-house connected to an existing retail space. What is being added is a storefront entrance, a community room, flex room, and an upper level design studio. In addition, a mobile digital fabrication lab funded by Ford Motor is being built.

The C3: Community Construction Cooperative looks to serve the needs of the community in a self-sustaining venture which brings together people from all backgrounds to create opportunities where they have never existed before. Inte-grating the unique talents of the Urban Design Build Studio, Trade Institute of Pittsburgh, and Construction Junction will fuel innovation through collaborative efforts. The design is focused around public and private utility depending on the programs and entities which are using the space at the time. The centerpiece of the warehouse retrofit is the community room where a wide variety of activities are possible to take place. The flexible floor plan allows for formal conference meetings, casual discussions between shoppers, and everything in between.
The two main modular walls of the community room open up into the production space and wood shop area to allow for demonstrations or large public gatherings.
The construction of the Community will be done both with high-tech (digital fabrication) and low-tech (traditional con-struction) equipment.

C3: DIGITAL FABRICATION LAB PITTSBURGH,PA
The Mobile Fabrication Lab is an educational, promotional, and constructional aid for C3’s presence in the Pittsburgh area. This Lab will be brought to construction sites to retrofit historic homes in the community. Many of the homes in this region are in need of repair due to soil settlements and long term environmental exposure.
This Lab will house a CNC machine that will allow for precise customization of any retrofit needs. It will also contain a Vacuum former which will allow for quick reproduction of any mold made of this house. The intent for this is that through speed and accuracy a team of students will be able to fix low income homes that are in extreme need of renovation.
The design and construction of the Lab will be done with both machines housed in the Mobile Fabrication Trailer and use all recycled products including cardboard and recycled plastics. The expected date of completion will be in the end of May and hopefully will begin aiding in retrofits throughout this upcoming summer.

CATENARY ARCH GREAT HALL OF COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS/ CARNEGIE MELLON, PITTSBURGH, PA
This project was in colloration with Dale Clifford (professor) and Elizabeth Duray (TA), Christina Chen, Sung Hwang, Matt Adler, Max Park, Rohan Rathod, Jacob Russo, Sage Altenhofen, and Esra Aras.
The assignment was to design and build a catenary arch. The final product was to be a 15 ft2 free standing structure made of plywood and mechanical joinary. 24 hours was given to build on site. The design began with precedent studies and model making which led to full-scale testing, and corresponding shop drawings. The final design consisted of three laminated arches anchored to timber footings, The canopy was a result of geometric studies done of a hexogonal grid.

How do we wear our clothing? Is it sim-ply applied like so much paint, or can it be inhabited, occupied?
The APPARATUS for the 2012 Lunar Gala show explores the ambiguity between garment, prosthetic, body, and mechanism. Each look involves a combination of traditional garment construction and the digital fabrication of acryllic or wooden armatures for the body. The use of lasercut fabric adds a layer of texture and dimensionality to some of the clothes.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER SCHOOL FRICK PARK//NINE MILE RUN, PITTSBURGH, PA
A project for an environmental charter school located at Nine Mile Run in the area of Frick Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Nine mile run creates the boundary for the south end of Frick Park. Renovations have been done by the city of Pittsburgh to revitalize the wetlands in this area. However, the surrounding landscape is still populated and is in need of public attention.
This project introduces an educational component allowing us-ers of Nine Mile run to be exposed to the rising environmental issues in Pittsburgh. The campus is dispersed into three aca-demic buildings: classrooms, administrative, and lecture hall. They are intertwined by a continuous path shared with public users of Frick Park. This path takes the users along different landscapes existing in Frick park, as well as new innovations designed by students of the environmental charter school. The architecture responds to the topography of Frick Park, and con-siders how the environment will change with time.

The project first began with a quarter-mile site survey of Frick Park. As a studio-wide collaboration, topography, vegetation, and user’s activities were documented. This data was recorded on a transect of Frick Park.
The renovations made over time to better the park were noted from the site survey. In Nine Mile Run, this included an introduction of a wetland vegetation as well as board-walk for recreational uses. These same devices were used to create continuity of the school with Frick Park.

MARKET HALLEAST LIBERTY, PITTSBURGH, PA.
Located at the intersection of Penn Avenue and Penn Circle in Pittsburgh’s historic East Liberty District, this farmer’s market is a response to the complex nature of the site as well as the flexible program of a market.
To propose a fexible space, a masted structure was chosen for the primary structural system. This system allows the weight of the roof to be suspended on a center column. As a result, the perimeter walls are in tension - pulling the roof down, rather than in compression. Because the perimeter walls are no longer holding up the roof, they have the ability to be rotated and allow for interaction with users of Penn Ave. and Penn Circle.
To fit the complex nature of the site, three modules of the market hall were designed to be connected at the seams for the administra-tive spaces. The most potent aspects of the design are the three columns that reach a height of 94 feet. The purpose of the height of the columns is to place less stress on the suspension cables. Because of the prominent nature of the intersection, it also becomes an icon for the growing urban needs of East Liberity

PERFORMANCE CENTERBOSTON, MA
This project is an addition to the historic Shubert Theatre in Boston.
The main focus of this center is to provide visibility of the dance studios to the public. The four dance rooms are double height and placed on alternating floors. This creates connection of the dancers to each other as well as viewers.
The facade is correlated to the volumes of the dance studios as well as the typology of Shubert Theatre.

ACTION HOUSING UPTOWN // PITTSBURGH, PA
This project was in collaboration with Ting Wang, Ling He, Emily Punaty, and Alexandre Kinney for the organization of Action Housing.
The aim of this project is to create an affordable, residential home for a resident of Uptown living with 80 percent to median income. The project began with a thorough understanding of the project scope : Demo-graphics, Site Location, and Developmental Prospect.
The plan of house aims to attract the demographic of young professionals while abiding by the zoning and building codes. The first floor is an open kitchen and living room. The second and third each contain a bedroom, study, bathroom, and balcony. By consulting with Action Housing, this project went through revision to fit the historical, environmental, and financial context of Uptown Pittsburgh.
The end product was a 96 page book containing the design and research done collaboratively.

UPTOWN HOUSING // PROCESS
To understand who would be the potential buyer of a residential home in Uptown, research was done to observe the potential urbanization of Uptown. Surveying the existing residents was useful in understanding what they would like to see changed in Uptown. The proximity of Uptown to downtown, Oakland, UPMC, and Duquense University led to the conclusion that young professionals would be inclined to rent or purchase in Uptown.
The cost and logistics of the house were calculated based on young professionals making a salary on median income. The final cost was $520,000 for two housing developments in Uptown.
