Education plans & packages that support the needs of the aviation industry

Colleges/academies in Africa

• Create their own content or purchase aviation courses from associations like IATA, ICAO, ACI and other specialised companies (GDSs, Security companies, etc.)

• Package these aviation courses along with other courses like soft-skills courses or technical courses

• Offer as full diploma programmes, sometimes with room and board

Education plans are most successful and appealing to students when they lead to job placement

• Training academies often form agreements with travel agencies, cargo companies and ground handlers for internships or even employment after training• Kenya – travel and tourism courses, cargo handling courses, soft skills courses, life skills, work

experience job placement at travel agencies or freight forwarders

• Ethiopia – fares and ticketing courses + separate GDS courses joint diploma

• South Africa – Technical courses, non-technical courses internal job placement11

Which skills shortages have been identified within the aviation industry?

The IATA Aviation Human Resources Report 20181 identified 3 areas that will be impacted by the doubling of passenger traffic in the next 20 years:

• Cabin Crew

• Customer Service

• Ground Operations

The IATA Aviation Ground Handling Report 20192 - Attracting, developing & retaining talent, outlined the unique challenges of retaining people in Ground Handling positions:

• Lack of obvious/attainable career path

• Unfavourable working conditions

• Competes with other low-skilled industries

14

Additional skills could be in short supply in the future… how can we predict what they will be?

In 2020, IATA will create a Skilled Staff Think Tank comprised of industry stakeholders to:

• Define critical skills needed now and in the future

• Understand through surveys the current levels of these skills to determine the shortage

• Ask the industry what the root causes of the shortage are

Call for participation from industry stakeholders:

• We are looking for: Airlines, Airports, ANSPs, CAAs to join the Think Tank

Page 15: $YLDWLRQ 7UDLQLQJ 1HHGV DQG - ATNS · 2019-10-30 · )udphzrunv iru wudlqlqj +rz grhv ,$7$ gholyhu dyldwlrq wudlqlqj" ,qvwuxfwru /hg ,$7$ fodvvurrpv ,$7$ lqvwuxfwru 5hjlrqdo 7udlqlqj

What is Africa doing to develop specialised accredited training courses for the aviation industry?

• Joint initiative between Absa bank in South Africa and nonprofit organisation Maharishi institute to establish a cyber security academy to train youth in South Africa on cyber security skills1,2

• Students who participate will become certified cybersecurity analysts

• These students can eventually bring their skills to the aviation industry

• Collaborations between organisations for the development of secondary students

• Honeywell and Gauteng Department of Education (GDE)3

– Honeywell noted there is a decline in engineers in South Africa due to a lack of interest by kids at school level in pursing engineering as a career

– Collaboration is comprised of initiatives to increase interest in STEM subjects among students

• Partnerships between training schools and GDSs

• Diploma programmes that include travel and tourism training and practical experience on GDSs –leading to diplomas and joint certificates

What about highly-specialised courses?

Some highly-specialised courses are only available in a handful of countries in the world due to limited demand in individual countries as well as the high cost of provision

• Flight Procedure Design

• High investment required for technical software/equipment for institution

• High cost of course for students

• Retention of SMEs is a challenge

• Aeronautical Information Management (AIM)

• Specialised position

• Focus has been more on air traffic control within Africa

• Obstacle Evaluation, Cartography

• SMEs in this area traditionally have not come from an aviation background

16Attracting engineers to flight ops is key…

Page 17: $YLDWLRQ 7UDLQLQJ 1HHGV DQG - ATNS · 2019-10-30 · )udphzrunv iru wudlqlqj +rz grhv ,$7$ gholyhu dyldwlrq wudlqlqj" ,qvwuxfwru /hg ,$7$ fodvvurrpv ,$7$ lqvwuxfwru 5hjlrqdo 7udlqlqj

What is being done to retain aviation skills/knowledge developed within Africa?

• Fostering a virtuous circle of education/employment/giving back to the community

• Academies and travel agencies/cargo companies/etc. work together to build the pipeline of talent

– Travel agencies, cargo companies inform training schools of their needs

– Academies train students to meet those needs

• Aviation companies provide internships and then hire new graduates

• Employers (former graduates) hire future graduates

• Former graduates re-join academies as teachers

• Entrepreneurship to nurture interest in the industry

• Young African Aviation Professional Association – YAAPA

• Young Aviators Club of Africa – YACA

• Internship & graduate programmes: Boeing International Business Internship Program 2020, Airbus Internship and International Graduate Programme

• IATF brings needed aviation training to Africa so airlines can train/upskill their employees, especially in Safety

• IATA is focusing attention on bringing more women into the industry – meaning women will not have to travel outside of South Africa/Africa to join the industry or progress in their careers17
