The Young Musicians’ Bursary Fund (Y.M.B.F.) is a charitable fund established to provide educational and performance opportunities for young musicians. Those supported must live in Yorkshire and show exceptional artistic potential. Please note, all applicants are means tested to ensure Y.M.B.F. resources are allocated to those most in need. The fund was set up in 2014 by Mr. Samuel Moore (Director of Music, Arts@Trinity and Course Leader for Flamenco Guitar Studies, Instituto Cervantes) and currently receives patronage from: Councillor Michael Gibbons the Lord Mayor of Bradford 2014-15, Sir James Hill Bt OBE (W W Spooner Charitable Trust), Arts@Trinity, La Casita, Instituto Cervantes, Hobgoblin Music and many other generous individuals and organizations. Dr Anastasia Belina-Johnson, Assistant Head of Programmes at the Royal College of Music, is our advisory patron.

Despite the abundant musical talent in Yorkshire, educational and performance opportunities for many young musicians is limited. As a result, many young people demonstrating a strong aptitude in music in their early teens are unable to gain the experience of study and performance that will help them progress to higher education. Over the next three years the Y.M.B.F., with the help of its many donors, will provide educational and performance opportunities for at least one deserving young musician per year.

• Educational Opportunities: The Y.M.B.F. facilitates a wide range of educational opportunities for its beneficiaries.

These include music workshops, master classes and one-to-one lessons with world-renowned musicians.

• Performance Opportunities: The Y.M.B.F. also provides its beneficiaries with public performance opportunities. These are specifically designed to acclimatize them to diverse concert situations, such as: recitals in cathedrals and auditoriums, festival performances, and function-based work in restaurants.

• Career Advice: As the core focus of the Y.M.B.F. is to help young musicians progress to higher education, our advisory patron, Dr Anastasia Belina-Johnson, provides advice and support for our beneficiaries when preparing for their auditions at Universities and Music Colleges.

The Y.M.B.F. currently supports one beneficiary, Arthur Daniel Gonzalez-Jareño Wacey (Artie Gonzalez). Over the next year we intend to identify a second young person who requires support and so forth over subsequent years.

Artie Gonzalez: Artie Gonzalez is a fourteen-year-old musician based in Leeds who during the last six months of tuition has demonstrated exceptional potential as a performer. He is proficient in a number musical forms; however, his principal area of study, is flamenco. In one-to-one lessons, Artie has mastered musical material most students do not encounter until university, as well as demonstrating an aptitude for composition well beyond his years. In June 2014 Artie performed a solo guitar recital at the Leeds Flamenco Festival and attended a guitar workshop with Juan Martín, the internationally renowned flamenco musician. Juan was deeply impressed with Artie’s ability remarking: “He just has a natural talent in his hands.” As a result of this encounter Juan has agreed to offer Artie a place on his international Flamenco Guitar Summer School in Spain. Such invitations to study with a performer of Juan’s standing are not given lightly and Artie’s musical experience would be greatly enhanced by this unique opportunity. Despite his evident talent, the overall costs of the opportunities now open to Artie are prohibitive. The total amount required for Artie to study with Juan Martín, despite discounts, is still substantial, given accommodation and travel

expenses. The Y.M.B.F. is committed to support Artie in being able to attend this once in a lifetime opportunity. In addition, the Y.M.B.F. is currently organizing quality performances to help Artie develop his skills, as well as other opportunities outside of his core (school) education. In order to ensure transparency, the Y.M.B.F. operates a three-tier system of decision-making. All recommendations regarding the initial allocation of funds are the responsibility of our Core Team. An Independent Committee, comprising of individuals with expertise in specific relevant fields, must then review and unanimously approve these decisions. Once this approval is given, an application must be submitted to Arts@Trinity who administers the Y.M.B.F.’s finances allowing funds to be drawn. Arts@Trinity is a charitable company limited by guarantee; it has 12 trustees who meet regularly to administer to the management and finances of the company. The Y.M.B.F. is exclusively to facilitate educational and performance opportunities for its beneficiaries, this will be provided by musicians and organizations that are independent from the Y.M.B.F.’s decision making process. Under no circumstances can any member of the Y.M.B.F.’s Core Team, Independent Committee or Arts@Trinity receive payments from the fund. This system creates a clear separation of responsibilities. In addition to this, further checks and balances have been put in place to ensure all Y.M.B.F. payments are controlled centrally and are in keeping with the aims and ethos of the fund. Under no circumstances can bank transfers be made, or cheques issued to beneficiaries directly. Instead Arts@Trinity will pay the supplier of any service on behalf of the Y.M.B.F.’s beneficiaries. Arts@Trinity is also responsible for keeping a detailed record of all Y.M.B.F. donations and all accounts are professionally audited.

The Y.M.B.F.’s Core Team comprises of two highly qualified individuals who each have expertise in specific relevant fields to the funds work. It is the responsibility of the Core Team to make recommendations to the Y.M.B.F.’s Independent Committee as to whom the fund will support and how this support will be allocated.

All submissions must be sent via email ([email protected]), or as a physical submission by post (Samuel A. Moore, Y.M.B.F. Applications, Arts@Trinity, Holy Trinity Church, Boar Ln, Leeds, LS1 6HW). The adjudication process is as follows:

• First Round of Adjudication: Our Core Team will initially assess all submissions for Y.M.B.F. funding. It is the job of the Core Team to select the three most promising submissions to progress through to the second round of adjudication.

• Second Round of Adjudication: The chosen three young musicians will then be invited to meet the Y.M.B.F.’s Core Team and Independent Committee in early September at Holy Trinity Church. During this meeting the chosen musicians will perform a short prepared piece, no more than five minutes in length.

• The Decision: Following the second round of adjudication, the Core Team will make a recommendation to the Independent Committee as to who the Y.M.B.F. will support and how this support will be allocated. The Independent Committee must unanimously approve this recommendation before it is confirmed.
