Neighbours are entirely / highly dependent on South Africa from an automotive perspective:

Common dealer groups in Botswana & Namibia,

Limited major OEM dealers in Lesotho & Swaziland -many deals done across the border.

South Africa - Automotive Exports

Vehicle exports from South Africa into the rest of Africa are growing (considered a gateway),

Toyota export in the order of 40,000 Hilux pick-ups into Africa each year,

The export of Ford Ranger pickups is growing to similar levels,

South Africa exports in the order of 100,000 vehicles to Africa each year,

Algeria, Nigeria and Angola are important destinations (24,281 units), Nigeria (14,874) and Angola (7,781),



Nissan is also a major pick-up exporter to Africa,

“The rest of Africa” is typically a new pick-up market (excluding imported used cars) and South Africa is an important source,

Export values to Africa for parts (excluding vehicles) including Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia were in the order of ZAR30b in 2013,

Main parts export countries include Algeria, DRC, Nigeria, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland & Mozambique.


South Africa – Automotive Exports




Egypt

Manufacturing in the order of 100,000 passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses (GM, Toyota, Suzuki are large assemblers),

Market in the order of 200,000 to 3000,000 units, balance currently made up by imports, numbers vary depending on conflict situation which creates pent up demand,

Assembly capacity for 225,000 vehicles,

Egypt is the third largest car-producing market in Africa, after South Africa and Morocco,

There are roughly 300 factories that produce most automotive components,

Players include GM, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai, Daewoo, Geely, Renault, Kia, Suzuki, other Chinese growing.


Algeria

New vehicle market in the order of 400,000 units (grown by four times in 10 years),

Renault, Peugeot, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan and VW are major players,

Mercedes-Benz produced its first two vehicles( Sprinter & G-Class) in Algeria in 2014,

A joint venture between the Algerian state and France's Renault started operation in 2014,

Initial capacity of 25,000 vehicles/year (target 75,000 / 150,000),

Just 17% of the car parts will be produced locally, mainly plastic components (will grow),

Renault has a three-year period of exclusivity on car manufacturing in Algeria.


Angola

Was a plan at one point to assemble using Japanese Nissan technology and many other similar projects – none of which have come to fruition,

Huge used car import market,

Formal new imports include many trucks,

There is and established luxury segment in spite of poor roads (Porsche has a dealer in Luanda along with its other African dealers in South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria),

New vehicle market worth roughly 40,000 units per annum (cars roughly 75%),

Major brands include Hyundai, Suzuki, Toyota, Kia, Ford & Chevrolet,

The Chinese brands are attempting to gain a foothold.


Morocco

Somaca (Renault) produced 60,000 cars in 2012 (Renault and Dacia) now Sandero (process copied from Romanian plant),

Objective to export to Europe,

Renault also has a plant at Tangier (400,000 unit capacity, will target exports),

2012 total car production 120,000 (roughly 90,000 of them exported to Europe and Arab nations),

2014 market in the order of 120,000 new cars,

Strong local parts supply (roughly 40% of plant requirements),

Renault claims a 37% market share within Morocco (under recent pressure),

Peugeot and Ford also have major presences in the market.

New vehicle sales <20,000 units pa (constitute 30% of the market -rest used imports): Pick-up / SUV / Commercial (most passenger cars are used

imports), Toyota, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, GM, Hyundai.

Toyota is the major overall player: Imported used Toyotas dominate the market (informal channels), Toyota assemble.
