York Rite Crusader Spring, 2011 Volume XLV1 -- Issue 2 Governor General’s Message To all Companion Knights, I extend to each of you greetings on behalf of the York Rite Sovereign College of North America. It is hard to believe, but almost a year has gone by since I was installed as Governor General. During the travels of my first year, I have been greeted with such fraternal hospitality, and respect, that I must say I am truly honored; and at the same time, a bit awe struck that I have this privilege of being your Governor General for this biennium. I thank you all for your continued support and fraternal companionship. As you know, our 54 th General Assembly is just around the corner, July 28-30, 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee. Great events have been planned by the capable members and their ladies of the colleges in Tennessee. We have three tours planned, as well as an ice cream social, and we would be remiss to not take advantage of the great country music performers at our entertainment on Friday night. We have rearranged the schedule of events to permit some Companion Knights, who choose, to save a day of travel and expense. The new schedule will also permit the Sovereign College Officers to attend the most important workshop for Grand Governors and Deputy Grand Governors. I would like to extend my congratulations to the members of the 2011 Order of the Purple Cross Class. I know each of you realize what this honor means. It is the highest honor we confer on an individual. I thank each of you for your continued service and look forward to greeting you in Nashville. This year’s Class will be named in honor of Rev. Robert J. Cave, a great mason and gentlemen of the first order. Our very capable Sovereign College Officers are stepping aside this year in the conferral of the Order of the Purple Cross. We are trying to involve more Companion Knights in the General Assembly and a team of volunteers will confer our College’s highest honor. I look forward to their fine exemplification. Governor General’s Message

To all Companion Knights,

I extend to each of you

greetings on behalf of the

York Rite Sovereign College

of North America. It is hard

to believe, but almost a year

has gone by since I was

installed as Governor General.

During the travels of my first

year, I have been greeted with

such fraternal hospitality, and

respect, that I must say I am

truly honored; and at the same

time, a bit awe struck that I

have this privilege of being

your Governor General for this biennium. I thank you all for

your continued support and fraternal companionship.

As you know, our 54th General Assembly is just around the

corner, July 28-30, 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee. Great events

have been planned by the capable members and their ladies of

the colleges in Tennessee. We have three tours planned, as well

as an ice cream social, and we would be remiss to not take

advantage of the great country music performers at our

entertainment on Friday night. We have rearranged the

schedule of events to permit some Companion Knights, who

choose, to save a day of travel and expense. The new schedule

will also permit the Sovereign College Officers to attend the

most important workshop for Grand Governors and Deputy

Grand Governors.

I would like to extend my congratulations to the members

of the 2011 Order of the Purple Cross Class. I know each of you

realize what this honor means. It is the highest honor we confer

on an individual. I thank each of you for your continued service

and look forward to greeting you in Nashville. This year’s Class

will be named in honor of Rev. Robert J. Cave, a great mason

and gentlemen of the first order.

Our very capable Sovereign College Officers are stepping

aside this year in the conferral of the Order of the Purple Cross.

We are trying to involve more Companion Knights in the

General Assembly and a team of volunteers will confer our

College’s highest honor. I look forward to their fine

exemplification.

It is with great sadness that we are informing you of the

passing of our 1994-1996 Governor General, Edward R.

Saunders, Jr. He was not only a giant in American Freemasonry,

but was a kind gentleman, who lead effectively and displayed a

great sense of humor. His guidance will be sorely missed.

I look forward to greeting you in Nashville, Tennessee.

Parthenon Tour - Thursday, July 28, 2011

Nashville‟s Parthenon is the only full-scale replica of the Greek Parthenon in existence.

Created with exacting attention to detail, its massive columns and pleasing dimensions will delight

everyone. This elegant structure serves as a monument to what is considered the pinnacle of

classical architecture, highlighted by the 42-foot gilded statue of Athena and plaster casts of the

Elgin Marbles which adorned the pediments of the Athenian Parthenon dating back to 438 BC.

The Nashville Parthenon also houses three art galleries including the James Cowan

Collection of 19th-20th century American art. This collection emphasizes mostly

landscape and seascape, technical styles vary from Neo-classic to Impressionism.

Another gallery Exhibit is the large-scale color photography by nationally

prominent nature photographer Byron Jorjorian. All the photographs in this

collection are taken in Tennessee. He enables his viewers to see moments we

might otherwise miss. The buses leave the hotel at 1:30 pm and return at 4:00 pm.

Lunch is on own, there are no restaurants available on site, so plan accordingly.

The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum's core, permanent exhibit tells the

story of country music from its pre-commercial roots in the nineteenth century through

its vibrant life today. This exciting, multi-layered experience includes artifacts,

photographs, original recordings, archival video, newly produced films, touch screen

interactive media, and beautifully rendered text panels. The exhibit immerses the visitor

in the history and sounds of country music, its meanings, and the lives and

voices of its honored personalities. The self-guided tour is organized

chronologically and covers two floors of the Museum. Part one is titled Sing

Me Back Home: The Journey Begins, Folk Roots to the 1960s. In 2010 the

Museum greatly expanded and renamed the second part: Dreaming My

Dreams: The Journey Continues, 1960s to the Present.

The Ryman Auditorium is often called the Ryman Theater. The venue is one of the most

historic theaters in the US. From 1943 to 1974 the Ryman Theater was the home of the Grand Ole

Opry. In 2001 the Ryman Auditorium was designated a state historical landmark. You can actually stand on stage and pretend

that you are a rising star. Buses leave the hotel at 11:00 am and return at 4:00 pm. Lunch is on own, restaurants are available

for your convenience.

The Hermitage is one of the largest open spaces in the urban Nashville, Tennessee area. The

Hermitage includes 1,120 acres, thirty-two historic buildings, dozens of archaeological sites, two

springs, a formal garden, a vegetable garden, and a cotton patch. You will enjoy

the experience of visiting many of these sites on your visit. The Hermitage

mansion has been meticulously restored to its 1837 appearance and today looks

much as it did when Andrew Jackson returned to it after finishing his second

term as President. After the home was damaged by fire in 1834, Jackson had it

remodeled in the Greek Revival style. Today, six wallpapers installed after the

fire still hang on the walls and the majority of the furniture in the home was

purchased by the Jackson family to replace pieces damaged in the fire. Personal

objects, like Jackson‟s swords and books, also adorn the home along with the Jackson family‟s

collection of portraits. When you arrive at the Hermitage mansion, costumed historical interpreters

greet you and prepare you for your tour. Inside, historical interpreters stationed throughout the house tell you about Jackson,

his family, and his home and answer any questions you have. Buses leave the Hotel at 1:00 pm and return at 4:00 pm. Lunch

is on own. There are no restaurants available on site, so plan accordingly.

Pictured above are the 2010-2011 Officers of Illinois College

No. 15 located in Chicago, Illinois.

In fulfillment of their mission to assist and support the York

Rite bodies, members of Illinois College No. 15 worked together

over a period of two years to restore and relocate a dormant

Council of Cryptic Masons from the Windy City to a new home

in the suburbs.

Adoniram Council No. 95, chartered in 1912, had originally

met in downtown Chicago. However, they had lost their

meeting place to a sale of the temple. Many members had

passed away, and most officers had become inactive. With little

paraphernalia and its records in storage, the Council had ceased

to meet.

Not wishing to see yet another York Rite body surrender its

charter, a small group from Illinois College No. 15 decided to

try to salvage the Council. Officers included Bradley L. Baker,

OPC, Jack D. Chasteen, DSA, Alan M. Hubble, James W.

Patton, OPC, and Paul A. Scheeler.

Preeminent Governor Richard E. Yena, OPC, served as

Recorder during the transition period, while the Council met

with a daylight Royal Arch Chapter at a suburban temple. Also

providing support was Richard T. Carnall, OPC, Past Grand

Master of the Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of the State of

Illinois.

With its records squared away, Adoniram Council began

looking for a more permanent location. They found a group of

interested Royal Arch Companions at Euclid Chapter No. 13 in

nearby Naperville. Euclid‟s members were eager to bring an

evening Cryptic Council to their temple, where only a Lodge

and Chapter had met since the mid-1800s.

Nearly six months after its relocation, Adoniram Council

has attracted additional members, installed new officers, and is

acquiring paraphernalia for conferring the Cryptic Degrees,

using its own members and officers. Andrew B. Siedelmann,

also a member of the College, helped organize and transfer the

Council‟s finances.

“It was gratifying to help preserve a nearly century-old

Cryptic Council,” said Preeminent Governor Yena, “We expect

to assist them with degrees and anticipate obtaining even more

new members for our College going forward, so this effort has

turned into a win-win for the whole York Rite.”

for their approval.

Article 5, Regents, Section 3 Currently reads –

“If, in the opinion of three fourths (3/4) of the Regents

present at a General Assembly, a Regent is considered by

them to be inactive, his status shall be changed to that of

Regent Emeritus, or a Regent may become a Regent

Emeritus at his own request. Regents Emeritus shall have

a voice at Assemblies of the YORK RITE SOVEREIGN

COLLEGE OF NORTH AMERICA but shall have no

vote.”

Be amended to read – Words appearing in black italicized are

added to the section

Members of the York Rite in Rochester, New York

participated in a “York Rite Have a Heart Day” at a local

shopping mall to generate donations for the local Ronald

McDonald House. This effort by the York Rite Masons was

organized by Genesee York Rite College No. 25 of Rochester.

The York Rite Masons, along with all other Masonic

organizations within the Rochester area, helped to raise over

$19,000 during the “Have a Heart” program that ran the first

two weeks of February. This money will help support families

that stay at the local Ronald McDonald house while their child

undergoes medical treatment at a local hospital.
