PLAN NUMBER 10-2-205

T W O - B E D R O O M RECREATIONAL HOME

With details borrowed from a fairy-tale cottage, this two-bedroom rec-reational home boasts a curved roofline that sweeps over the arched front entry and an open veranda that wraps around three sides of the home. Rustic river rock clads both the support beams on the veranda and the arched front façade.

The compact floor plan features two bed-rooms on the main level plus a 288-sq. ft. loft a space that could easily be used for a home office, library, games room or guest accommodation.

From the covered veranda, the front door opens to reveal a spa-cious great room with a vaulted ceiling, a gas fireplace and two walls lined with windows. The adjoining kitchen includes a work island with a cook top and a raised eating bar.

From the good-sized dining area, a door opens to the back veranda, the

perfect spot for barbecu-ing meals in summer. A corner pantry cupboard provides all the storage space needed for grocer-ies.

A spacious mud room off the kitchen also enjoys access to the out-doors, making this the ideal entry to use after working in the garden.

A three-piece bath-room is situated opposite the staircase to the loft area. A sliding pocket door to the master bed-room makes this bath-room a semi-en-suite. The second bedroom is also conveniently locat-ed beside the bathroom.

The master suite has a vaulted ceiling, two clothes closets and a large picture window topped by a decorative arch. This window is trimmed with shutters on the outside and over-looks a built-in planter.

The airy loft is open to the floor below and also has a side window, ensuring lots of natural light.

This home has 1,633 square feet of finished living space and mea-sures 40 feet wide by 47

feet deep.Plans for design 10-2-

205 are available for $725 (set of 5), $820(set of 8) and $896 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 out-side of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges.

Parenting Tips from Regional KidsFirst

Dealing with strong emotions

Young children lead challenging lives. They have to learn everything. It can be frustrating for a child to walk through a store full of goodies and toys and all they hear is no, no, no! When they reach a level of frustration that they can no longer handle, they may have a ‘tantrum’.Remember that when your child is having a full blown tantrum, they are already beyond reason. You won’t be able to argue them out of a tantrum and yelling at them will only escalate things. A child’s sense of security depends on knowing that when they lose control, you won’t. Try and soothe your child by rocking, humming, singing, stroking or holding them. When their tantrum is over, calmly continue whatever was happening, not letting the tantrum affect things. The most important tool that a parent has for dealing with tantrums is to try and avoid them. Here are a few tips to help:

Offer choices, whenever possible

Avoid placing the child in situations that are going to be difficult for them. For example, waiting at a doctor’s office with nothing to do. Come prepared with snacks, toys and books available for long waits that you can’t avoid.

If you need to take them shopping, make sure that there is something in it for them.

Give warnings. “We need to go in 10 minutes.”

Explain your warnings. “because we need to pick up Sandy from school.”

Don’t sweat the small stuff

Remember that anger is a normal part of life. Everyone feels angry from time to time.

Did you know that about one-third of the world’s food crop pro-duction relies on pol-lination? Perhaps due to this connection, the plight of pollinators (bees in particular) has recently become highly publicized worldwide. Todd Farrell, conserva-tion biologist with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) says that while bees have been the poster child in the media, other pollinators such as butterflies and moths that are facing similar challenges should not be left out.

“We are just begin-ning to understand pol-linators’ importance in our ecosystems and food systems, and their status in the wild,” says Todd. “Insect diversity is vast and there’s a lot we still don’t know. Building up

this knowledge base can help us better manage our lands.” Farrell says that by conducting target-ed surveys and contrib-uting to province-wide counts, NCC scientists are able to gather more information on popula-tion sizes, trends and the locations of certain pol-linator species.

For example, findings from one of last year’s moth surveys at an NCC property in the Rice Lake Plains Natural Area proved great potential as a core area for prov-incially and nationally significant moths. While conservation organiza-tions like NCC are mak-ing progress in the field and helping us build a better picture of pollin-ators on the lands they protect, change can hap-pen right at home.

Here are three ways

you can be a champion

for our pollinators:Pollinator friendly plants

and wildflowersSpecies such as wild

bergamot and black-eyedSusan are examples of plants suitable in allareas. However, someplants may only be appropriate for a certainhabitat type or climaticzone. Use native plantguides to learn aboutwhat’s appropriate for your area.

Plants that pollin-ators will love include bee balm, milkweed andother nectar- and pollen-rich species. Choosing a variety of plants that flower at different timesof the year helps ensure a steady food supply forour pollinators!

Tip: Once you’veselected your seeds, help them germinate by seal-ing the seeds in a Ziploc bag with a damp paper towel. Then store themin the refrigerator for a few weeks until the risk of frost has passed.

Water and salt licksAccess to fresh, clean

water is essential forpollinator health. Line ashallow dish with a few pebbles as landing pads, and voilà: a hydration station for your ladybugs, butterflies, bees and more.

Butterflies also usesalt licks to satisfy a needfor nutrients and min-erals. Make your gardenmore inviting by creatinga damp area over bare soil mixed with a littlesea salt for a DIY saltlick.

Tip: Spot a grounded, exhausted bee stragglingabout? Help get it back on its feet (or wings rath-er) by offering a spoonwith sugar water.

Nesting havensYou may be surprised

that not all bees live inhives; in fact, of Canada’s 800 native bee species, about 30 percent are soli-tary and live in under-ground burrows, woodtunnels or other cavities.

Tip: Even without anycarpentry skills, you canbuild a bee condo usingwood blocks and hollowstems.

Will you help bringback the buzz of pollin-ators this season? Find out how you can help by contacting your localNCC office and sign upfor volunteer opportun-ities such as tree plant-ings, invasive species removal and butterflycounts at www.nature-conservancy.ca.
