FOCUS

Good: “I am a young, intelligent person aspiring to become one like no other while pursuing
an education in the field of communications, marketing, and business leadership.”
Better: “Communications and marketing student aspiring to become a
business leader.”

Short History Founded on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and
Chris Hughes while at Harvard
Political candidates were the first to be allowed to have what are now known as “fan” pages.
Got the idea from a student / faculty pamphlet in boarding school informally known as the “Face Book”
Has been blocked in Syria, China, Vietnam, and Iran….and countless workplaces.
Used to be for students only. Now open to anyone over 13 with a valid email.
Rules of the Road Facebook is a wonderful way to keep in touch with friends and family.
Facebook can definitely help build your personal brand.
Employers have ways to research you on Facebook regardless of your privacy settings.
Facebook is not the enemy. A profile is encouraged, but not right for everyone.
Facebook is the most powerful new medium in marketing since the invention of the television.
No one cares about your mafia, your lost chicken, your virtual drink, or your Sex and the City doppelganger.

The Power of Social Media
"Instead of reciting a list of why we wanted people to vote for Barack, like we did for Kerry, we were told to ask what was important to people and listen to them.”
