The First Grade teachers and students

would like to THANK YOU for such a

successful food drive this year. Poff was

able to help more than 8 families in the

North Hills area during this holiday

season. Thank you for your donations

and support!

Opening Our Hearts!

Dear Poff Families,

For the past EIGHT years, Poff fifth graders have completed a very special community service

project by collecting items for the homeless and less fortunate in our area. We want to keep

this tradition alive, and we hope to make it even better this year! We will be collecting a

variety of items that will be delivered on Christmas morning to the shelter.

We are collecting TRAVEL SIZE personal care items. Students will decorate and fill bags with

these items right before the holiday break. We are asking each grade level to donate different

TRAVEL SIZE items, so that we have a consistent and wide variety of items for each bag.

Grade Level Items:

Kindergarten: Washcloths and body soap

1st grade: Combs, small brushes and nail care items (emery boards, nail clippers, etc.)

2nd grade: Toothbrushes and toothpaste

3rd grade: Hand sanitizer and hand/body lotion

4th grade: Shampoo and conditioner

5th grade: Tissues, deodorant and gum/candy

** We would like to have these items by December 20th.

Unfortunately, there are so many people in need this year, but we know that TEAM POFF can help make a difference this holiday season! (Collection boxes will be in the lobby.)

Thank you so much for your help and generosity!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Howe, Mrs. Dunmire, Mr. Lee and the Poff fifth graders!

Dear Parents,

The annual Poff Holiday Shop will be open on December 4th, 5th,

6th, and 7th during the school day.

A big part of the Holiday Shop's success is having parent volunteers

to help the kids shop, wrap presents, and help everything run

smoothly. Please see the Sign-Up Genius link below to volunteer.

The times that each class will be shopping are listed by the teacher's

last name, so you can sign up for when your child is shopping, or

any time that works for you.

Thank you for helping to ensure the success of the Holiday Shop!

What’s for dinner? That simple question can open a host of concerns: Is the food I’m preparing healthy? How much should my child be eating? My child will eat only mac ’n’ cheese. Buying healthy foods can be expensive!

Relax! You can serve up healthy food choices that even the pickiest of eaters will savor without breaking your budget. Healthy eating includes foods that are low in saturated fat, trans fat, salt (sodium), and added sugars. For kids ages 4–18, keep the total fat intake between 25 percent and 35 percent of their calories, with most fats coming from sources of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and vegetable oils. Offer whole grains and a variety of fruits and veggies. Serve fat-free and low-fat dairy foods. Limit foods that are high in saturated fat, trans fat, salt (sodium), and added sugars. As for the “clean your plate” rule, get rid of it. Overeating is one reason kids get too many calories.

Got a picky eater? Introduce healthier items into foods your child already likes: top cereal with fruit, add blueberries to whole-grain pancakes, or shred veggies over rice. Play the eat-your-colors game with brightly colored fruits and vegetables, and include your child in the preparation—it may make him or her more likely to eat the food. Don’t buy unhealthy foods. If there are no chips in the house, kids will munch on healthier options instead.

Sincerely,

Dear Family,

On a budget? Try these healthy choices that are less than $1 per serving. Then go to the American Heart Association website at heart.org/HealthierKids to find more.

Good to Know!Chew on this: One in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese. This contributes to a wide range of health problems for kids, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and high blood cholesterol levels. Excess weight at young ages also has been linked to earlier death rates as adults. Teach your child good habits that will last a lifetime!

• Apples, bananas, oranges, and pears—Eat one as a snack or serve it in a fruit salad with dinner. Bananas are tasty in smoothies, and a pear served with cheese makes a tasty appetizer. Cut it up to serve as finger food. One piece of medium-size fruit equals one serving.

• Baby carrots—Eat them as a snack, include them in a stew, or serve them in

a veggie platter.

• Fat-free or low-fat yogurt—Eat it as a snack or use it in a smoothie. A six-ounce container usually is one serving. Read the Nutrition Facts label and select a yogurt without a lot of added sugars.

• Sweet potato—Bake it, mash it, steam it! One medium sweet potato is one serving.

• Oatmeal—Serve it hot for breakfast. One serving is a half cup.

• Frozen or fresh corn on the cob—This is a quick, kid-friendly side dish.

One ear of corn is one serving.

CALLING ALL BAKERS!!!!

In conjunction with the Hampton Band’s Holiday Extravaganza at Hampton High School on December 2nd, we will be holding our annual Holiday Cookie Walk as part of the event. Proceeds from this event benefit the Elementary, Middle, and High School band programs. Feel free to sign up for one of the cookies listed on the Sign-Up Genius – add your own family favorite, or try a new recipe. A link to sign up is included below. For those who aren't familiar with how the Cookie Walk works…

We ask willing band families (and friends of the band) to bake a minimum of 4 dozen of their favorite holiday cookie.

Cookies will be trayed and clearly labeled with the type of cookie and displayed on tables.

Customers will be provided with a plastic glove and a take-out container and they will proceed through the Cookie Walk choosing their favorite cookies.

When finished making their selections, they will pay for their cookies by weight at $9 per pound. ***We typically have close to 100 different kinds of cookies and well over 5,000 cookies!***

KEEP IN MIND: We are requesting a minimum of 4 dozen of the same kind of cookie from each baker, although feel free to sign up for several different kinds! Several bakers making the same type of cookie is OK, but keep in mind that we want to offer as large of a selection as possible so customers will have a hard time choosing and be enticed to buy more! If we get too many sign-ups for the same type of cookie we may need to reach out to ask a baker to consider a different cookie. TIPS:

1. When deciding on a cookie to contribute, remember that the cookies are going from your original container, then to a tray, then to the customer's container. Consider cookies that will hold up well in their travels and still make a nice presentation when the customer serves them.

2. Cookies should be delivered in a DISPOSABLE box or container. We will be unable to keep track of containers/trays that need to be returned to individuals.

3. Also, please clearly mark your box/container with the name of the cookie so we can accurately label them when trayed so that customers can easily identify what is available for purchase.

DROP OFF dates, times and locations are as follows:

PREFERRED: Friday, December 1st - Hampton High School Cafeteria from 4 pm - 8pm

Saturday, December 2nd - Hampton High School Cafeteria no later than 8am.

WE WOULD PREFER TO HAVE ALL COOKIES ON FRIDAY EVENING IF POSSIBLE TO ALLOW FOR SET UP. If you are absolutely unable to drop off at the High School on Friday or Saturday morning, please contact Lisa Wagner - [email protected] to make other arrangements. COOKIE WALK SIGN UP LINK: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c4ba5ab28a2f85-cookie2 Please consider baking a few extra dozen for the Cookie Walk! Remember that this event benefits ALL Hampton Band students, so even if you don't have a child in the High School Band, your child will still benefit from the proceeds of this event. Feel free to contact Lisa Wagner with any questions at [email protected] or 412-980-8902. Thanks for your support!
