1. Why was there a war in England?

One reason for the war was that people in Parliament were angry with the King because he closed them down.

The evidence for this is on page 12 of ‘King’ Cromwell :

“Charles sent the MPs home (closed Parliament) in 1629. MPs were angry because they thought the King should rule with the help of Parliament.”

2. Why was the king’s head cut off?

There were many reasons for this. Cromwell and others did not trust King Charles. The book ‘King’ Cromwell shows Cromwell thinking on page 29:

‘Can Charles be trusted? He talked peace before but then he deceived us and started another war. He might do

that again.’

3. Why was Cromwell loved, then hated?

Different people loved and hated him.

By the 17th century (1600s) kings still ruled but they also had to

listen to Parliament.

Members of Parliament were elected. All men who owned a lot

of property could vote.

Kings had to ask the opinion of MPs before making new laws.

Kings could not make new taxes without the permission of MPs in Parliament.

Protestant.

King Charles believed in the ‘Divine Right of Kings’.
