The Lord be with you.And also with you.Let us pray. Dear God of all grace, we would pause this morning to voice our thanks for all that you have done for us, for giving us of your Spirit to live our lives to your honor and glory, and so we pray, take our lives and use them to show forth your grace and give to us thankful hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

P s a l m 1 06 : 1 – 8

Responsively

Hallelujah! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever.

Who can declare the mighty acts of the Lord or show forth all his praise?

Happy are those who act with justice and always do what is right!

Remember me, O Lord, with the favor you have for your people, and visit me with your saving help;

That I may see the prosperity of your electand be glad with the gladness of your people, that I may glory with your inheritance.

We have sinned as our forebears did; we have done wrong and dealt wickedly.

In Egypt they did not consider your marvelous works, nor remember the abundance of your love; theydefiedtheMostHighattheRedSea.

But he saved them for his Name’s sake, to make his power known.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Lord be with you.And also with you.Let us pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Dear Members and Friends,

As many of you know so very well, it doesn’t come easily putting the brakes on doing what one has done for years, decades, almost a lifetime. It feels a wee bit overwhelming, because in my mind and heart, there is an inward sense that I am not simply applying the brakes for a sudden or even subtle stop. It is more like throwing the car keys away as one parks the faithful old vehicle at the precarious edge of a cliff!

I take some comfort, however, in the knowledge that so many of you have been on this journey and you have managed to maneuver the process, so making something worthwhile come forth from the experience of “hanging one’s boots up in retirement.” Because of the example of your journey through such experiences, I know that there is something worthwhile, meaningful, and rewarding in what we call “retirement” and that one doesn’t need to rely on “our reason for being” in the job you’ve done for most of your life. In a sense, real meaning comes from relationshipsandthereIhavebeensoveryfortunate.Youhavebeenlikefamily, some of you serving in the role of a loving parent, ready and willing to say what needed to be said and always with encouragement and care, and so very many who are like brothers and sisters, willing to share and be honest and supportive!

All I can say to each of you is: “Thank you!” And I will have that opportunity to do so publicly today! What is also exciting is that in the middle of this “family time” we will have the privilege and pleasure of having our new minister with us in worship, becoming part of this very wonderful family right here in Pebble Beach! It doesn’t get any better than this, andforthatIsay—“THANKYOU!”

See you in church,

WillliamB.Rolland

From Ecclesiastes Chapter 3: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven... a time to weep, and a time to laugh… a time to get, and a time to lose....” (The parts I omitted have an unusual level of detail for the conduct of everyday life. “A timetopaintthingsredandatimetoleavethemunfinished.”Justkidding.) But now is a time of both at once, not fully covered even if you restore the versesIleftout.Recallwewereonlypromisedlifewouldbeinteresting,notthatitwouldbesimple.Thusit’shardtoloseBillRolland,ourspiritualguideforthelast eighteen years, but a joy to welcome Joanne Swenson, of shining promise for the future. “Time” stumbles here on a technicality, but recovers on a re-evaluation of “weep” and “lose,” meaning that Bill remains in the neighborhood, available to consult or needle as the occasion demands. PersonalmessagetoBill:Youdonegood.Ifyouwereactuallyleaving,we’dmiss you awful.
