You Give Children Hope.A Healthy Future for Vancouver Island Children
Today and Tomorrow
PlannedGiving-Final-4.indd 1 4/19/13 10:20:04 AM
Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, formerly the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children, traces its
roots back 90 years. The Foundation as we know it today started
with a call for help in 1922. A desperate mother appealed to the
Women’s Institutes of British Columbia—her daughter Polly was
suffering from tubercular disease of the spine and their family
needed help.
Today, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, the Foundation
remains true to its original mission: to improve the health and
well-being of children and youth on Vancouver Island.

Children’s Health Foundation
Children mean the world to us. Children are first in our hearts and in our name.
When you make a planned gift to Children’s Health
Foundation of Vancouver Island it will have an
incredible impact.
Your gift has the power to make a difference in
the lives of children and youth with special needs.
Your legacy will live on through every success and
milestone they achieve.
Your kindness will resonate in everyone touched
by the work of Children’s Health Foundation of
Vancouver Island.

We share your vision for a healthier future for all children, and we work hard every day to make it happen. Thanks to our incredible donors, the reach of Children’s
Health Foundation is broad and has tremendous impact.
We fund innovative projects, programs, services and
equipment at the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s
Health in Victoria and various charitable agencies around
the Islands. Our Foundation also owns and operates the
Sooke and West Shore Child, Youth & Family Centres to
ensure families receive health care and social services close
to their homes. Jeneece Place, a home away from home for
families travelling to Victoria for their child’s medical care,
is another program of ours.

The power of a gift through your Will is incredible. It is a statement of your values and what you
stood for in your lifetime. It is your chance to provide children
on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands with the best
opportunities for their health and well-being.
This type of gift is an investment in your community and the
lives of future generations of children. Your gift may help your
grandchild or even their grandchildren. Although you may
not know today who will benefit from your gift, you can rest
assured the impact of your love, care and compassion will be
immeasurable. They will thank you for helping them achieve
their full potential.
Your legacy gift will have the
power to make a difference,
regardless of its size.
As Jeneece Edroff says,
“I’m a bit like a penny; by
myself I’m not worth much,
but with a little help and lots
of pennies you can achieve a
lot. Every penny counts and
even the smallest person
can make a difference.”

Jeneece PlaceMoms and dads arrive at Jeneece Place in absolute turmoil at the
affliction their child is facing. They are in survival mode, oblivious
to everything around them. Once settled into the house, just
steps from the hospital, they start to feel reinvigorated. They rest
in the calm of the house; they
share stories with other parents
facing similar circumstances.
The comforts and amenities
of Jeneece Place allow them to
concentrate their energy where
it is needed most—on the care
of their child.
Bear EssentialsSocial workers and child development agencies serving Vancouver
Island and the Gulf Islands identify children and families that need
a helping hand. Through Bear Essentials, these families can receive
up to $1,000 per child to help with expenses related to their child’s
health and well-being. In the past, funds have been used to help pay
for such things as emergency travel, ballet for a girl with low muscle
tone, specialized positioning equipment for twins who underwent
hip surgery, and a glass eye for a little boy who fought eye cancer
and won!
There are many ways your legacy gift can make a difference.

$1,000 will provide ten hours of therapeutic riding lessons to children needing physical therapy.
$5,000 will purchase two shower commodes for families to borrow through an equipment loan program. The shower commodes ensure a child’s comfort, safety, and respect while they undertake basic functions that many of us take for granted.
$10,000 will purchase 650 self regulation “fidget toolboxes” for children receiving in- and out-patient mental health services. When they are feeling agitated, frightened, or are at risk of self-injurious behaviour, these kits help calm their nerves and refocus their energy.
$15,000 will send 42 children with special needs to summer camp. It is a place for them to have everyday kid experiences like singing songs, making crafts and exploring nature.
$100,000 will cover the operating costs of Jeneece Place for 100 days—providing support and solace for families facing their child’s medical challenges.
Here are a few more examplesof how your gift can impact the lives of children. We look
forward to working with you to ensure your legacy gift supports
your areas of interest.

There are many ways you can leave a legacy gift.
BequestA charitable bequest is a gift specified in your Will. You may wish to designate a certain sum of money, a particular asset, or a percentage of your estate to Children’s Health Foundation. Whatever form your donation takes, it will have the same impact—helping kids.
Many of our donors set up bequests so the needs of their family are met first and any additional funds can help a cause they are passionate about. As with all donations to our Foundation, each one makes a difference regardless of its size.
Gift of Life InsuranceA gift of life insurance can be made with even a small financial investment. You can sign over an existing policy to Children’s Health Foundation, take out a new policy and donate it to our Foundation, or just simply make us a beneficiary of a policy— don’t forget about the policy you may receive through work.
Gift of SecuritiesAlthough this is more often a current gift rather than one made through your estate, it does require planning. If you donate publicly-listed securities, bonds or mutual funds which have increased in value to Children’s Health Foundation, you will not pay taxes on the capital gain. You also receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the shares.

Retirement PlansAs part of your estate planning, you may choose to designate Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island as the beneficiary of your RRSP or RRIF. The entire value of these assets is treated as income in your year of death and taxed accordingly, although that tax is deferred until the last of your or your spouse’s deaths. By directly donating an RRSP or RRIF, your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt for the full amount of the value, which can offset taxes otherwise payable.
Charitable Remainder TrustThis type of planning allows you to donate capital assets during your lifetime, reserving the right to all income earned during your lifetime. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the capital, adjusted for the value of your income interest, which can be used to reduce taxes in the year of the donation (with some carry forward possible). Upon your death, the capital held in the trust passes to the Foundation to help children.
You may prefer to restrict the use of your gift through your Will. Since the needs of children and youth change as years pass, we recommend that you add a “power to vary” clause to ensure your gift will deliver maximum value to the children you want to support.
If you wish to meet the most important health needs of children on Vancouver Island, we suggest that you make an unrestricted gift to Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. This allows us to address the most urgent needs of children, youth and families.

Your legacy giftis vital to the work of Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.
The Foundation does not receive any government funding and relies
entirely on the generosity of the community in our mission to help children.
Legacy gifts provide approximately one half of the money we need
each year to help children on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
Your gift will allow us to be responsive to the needs of the day.
If you prefer your gift to be endowed, it will become part of our
professionally managed investment portfolio. This helps ensure we
will be here serving children for the next ninety years—and longer.
We recognize that some donors do not wish to be publicly recognized
for their gifts. We assure you we will respect those who wish to remain
anonymous. It is still possible to enjoy many of the benefits of the
Queen Alexandra Legacy Circle without the loss of privacy.
If you have remembered Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver
Island with a future gift, please tell us so your intentions are
appropriately honoured. Some donors might worry that, by making
us aware of a gift in their estate, they will leave themselves open to
unwanted requests for additional donations. Any donor who does not
want to be solicited for further gifts
need only let us know and we will make
an appropriate note in our records.
Thank You.
