A Note of Gratitude

Dear Friends and Supporters,Earlier this year, a well-known personal finance website released its annual rankings of the most diverse cities in America. It may come as no surprise, but Gaithersburg, Germantown, Silver Spring and Rockville all ranked in the top 10. At Adventist HealthCare, we celebrate the diversity of the communities we serve. Recognizing the infinite worth of every person from every background and walk of life is a core value. I have neighbors whose first languages are Mandarin and Spanish. My children have teachers from France, Ivory Coast and Haiti. Our friends celebrate bat mitzvahs and quinceañeras, one comes from Uzbekistan, and another brings a traditional bento box to lunch. Our community embraces diversity and our community hospital does, too. Here at Shady Grove Medical Center, people from around the globe representing many cultures come to be cared for and serve others. What makes us a community, then, if we cannot look to our cultural traditions, our faiths or even our languages as our commonality? For me, you and your generosity are what makes us a community. You have put your arms around every person served by Shady Grove Medical Center – present and future – and have cared for them together with us. You have ensured that all of your neighbors – each one – have access to exceptional healthcare. This year, through your support, you cared for people in your community suffering from stroke and heart attack, comforted families with premature babies, offered hope to those battling cancer and more. You are more than generous members of a community; you are community builders. Thank you for leading the way in caring for one another.

With deepest gratitude,

Christina M. BerubeDirectorShady Grove Medical Center Foundation

This summer, we are taking our world-class stroke program to new heights with the addition of state-of-the-art technology that produces detailed, three-dimensional images of blood vessels leading to and inside the brain. A biplane imaging system will allow a highly-trained physician to perform an innovative procedure known as thrombectomy.

In this procedure, the physician places a catheter into the patient’s femoral artery, located in the thigh, and guides it to the brain so that a special tool can suction and remove a blood clot. The same technology can also be used to prevent an aneurysm from rupturing.

Nearly 110 golfers teed off at the annual Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Campus Golf Classic on Sept. 17. The event at Lakewood Country Club raised $185,000 to support the biplane. A very special thanks to our Platinum Sponsors, Michael and Amy Aquilino, and all our sponsors and participants for making the event a success!

REVOLUTIONIZING STROKE CARE Because of your generosity, Shady Grove Medical Center acquired the SAVI SCOUT, a cutting-edge device that eases breast cancer surgery without using radiation or wires. With the SAVI SCOUT, a radiologist implants a tiny reflector the size of a grain of rice in the patient’s breast up to a month before a lumpectomy or biopsy to mark the tumor.

Then, the day of surgery, the surgeon uses a small wand that emits radar waves to locate

the reflector and remove the tumor. SAVI SCOUT allows surgeons to target the affected tissue with pinpoint accuracy, which can preserve healthy breast tissue and result in better outcomes from both a recovery and cosmetic perspective.

The Power of Your Generosity

Below are some of the ways that your gifts helped heal and save lives at Shady Grove Medical Center.

Our Center for Fitness & Health helps people with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions recover faster through exercise, education and counseling programs. Gifts from generous community members allowed the Center to upgrade its recumbent stepper machines, which are particularly helpful to those with limited mobility. The new machines, which can be tailored to fit a patient’s height and weight, help increase cardiovascular stamina for those who cannot exercise on weight bearing machines such as the treadmill or elliptical trainer.

IMPROVING HEART HEALTH

Surgeon Glenn Sandler, MD, and Sonya Kella, MD, breast radiologist and medical director of women’s imaging at Adventist HealthCare.

Cardiac Rehab patient Robert Romano works out on one of the new recumbent stepper machines.

ENHANCING COMFORT FOR NICU FAMILIES

Through charitable support, Shady Grove Medical Center acquired an MRI-compatible IV pump, which has helped transform care for some of our most fragile patients. With this pump, nurses can safely and quickly transport patients to diagnostic exams while they remain on critically needed medications. The first use of this pump helped diagnose a potentially life-threatening spinal cord injury, allowing a patient to undergo a timely surgical intervention.

ADVANCING PATIENT CARE

Because of you, the Robert V. Aschenbach EmergencyDepartment acquired new LifePakdefibrillators, a critical piece ofequipment that enables caregiversto provide life-saving interventionto cardiac patients and monitortheir progress with the samemachine. The new defibrillatoris compact and less than half thesize of the old model.

PROVIDING LIFE-SAVING CARE

Thank you Conrad and

Lois Aschenbach for

your very special gift!

The Aquilino Cancer Center Clinical Research Program provides new treatment options for our cancer patients right here in our community. Charitable gifts support the Program, which enables patients to have access to cutting-edge treatments, new drug combinations and innovative diagnostic tests, all close to home. In 2018, patients participated in a cutting-edge liquid biopsy study, which offers the potential to use blood tests to detect cancer cells, instead of invasive and costly biopsy procedures.

OFFERING INNOVATIVE CANCER TREATMENTS

Thanks to your generosity, loved ones with babies in Shady Grove’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) now have a place to decompress and recharge with the addition of our new family lounge. This special space allows parents to stay near their babies while they rest, have a meal or connect with other NICU families.

Matt and MJ, whose son Jason was born at 24 weeks, were grateful to have a comfortable space to rest and make a meal during their daily NICU visits.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Shady Grove Medical Center’s pediatric emergency department treats nearly 20,000 patients each year, with more families seeking emergency mental health services than ever before. This year, Shady Grove is adding a special pediatric emergency psychiatric treatment unit that will benefit patients and caregivers alike.

This separate, secure unit will include five rooms with appropriate safety features, a nurse workstation and an open space for patients who have stabilized. With this dedicated space, young people suffering from a mental health crisis will receive immediate care in a healing, low-stress setting.

A Look Ahead Renovations to improve and expand patient care are underway at our Behavioral Health Services hospital, which is now part of Shady Grove Medical Center. As the largest provider of mental health services in Montgomery County, Adventist HealthCare offers comprehensive and life-changing care to people of all ages.

The first phases of the renovation and expansion project will focus on our units that serve adults with acute care needs, as well as those with severe and chronic mental illness. The next phase will upgrade and expand our units that serve children and adolescents, allowing us to provide critical services to more young people in need.

In 2019, our commitment to exceptional care continues:
