What is
happening in this
photograph?
How does this picture make
you feel?
Is there anything
about this picture that may disturb
people?
Islam like the other main world religions believes organ donation is
an individual choice.
However many Muslims are split as they feel there are teachings both for
and against it!
Look at the card you have been given...
In PAIRS – work out which are FOR and
which are AGAINST transplant surgery.
Summarise each argument into a short sentence
and complete the table.
IT GOES AGAINST
TEACHINGS IN THE QUR’AN The body,
including its organs, is holy and should not be interfered with. Organ
donation delays burial.
Muslims believe that on the LAST
DAY, the body will be resurrected.
The organs are needed for the afterlife and
bodily resurrection.
Only Allah can give life and take life away.
Transplant surgery may go against Allah’s plan.
Giving away body parts is not allowed as the body is a GIFT from Allah.
I’m a MUSLIM!
Me too!
That’s OK then!
The organs used by Muslims should only be donated by Muslims and this can’t be guaranteed.
The Qur’an promotes the saving of a life
and hold its in great esteem.
Its allowed!!!
The Muslim Law Council issued transplant surgery
as FATWA (scholars think it should be
allowed).
Muslims should try to help EVERYONE.
It prevents suffering – the necessity makes the unlawful lawful.
Allah will reward Muslims who save people from
death.
Grade C
All will be able to DESCRIBE 2
Muslim arguments FOR and 2 AGAINST transplant surgery.
.
Some Muslims disagree with donating from living
donors for similar reasons they disagree
with transplant surgery.
More agree with this than disagree as people can live
without the organs they have donated (e.g. one kidney) so
they are not essential for bodily resurrection.
HOWEVER... Most Muslims agree
with this but the donor should be a
close relative.
Why do you think most Muslims agree
with this?...
In 1995 the UK Shari’ah law (Muslim law) council
issued a FATWA (a religious opinion)
supporting organ donation and transplantation.
Organ donation is ALLOWED as a
means of stopping pain or to save a life
Muslims are allowed to carry a DONOR
CARD.
Next of kin may give permission to donate organs to
save lives.
Would you be FOR or
AGAINST transplant
surgery in the following cases?
Imagine u a part of the jury in a Sharia’h court...
For each scenario write a brief sentence explaining the circumstances.
Andrew is in need of a Kidney transplant and
is currently on the waiting list.
Kidney transplants can be
taken from live donors as you can survive with
only one.
Would the Shari’ah court be FOR or AGIANST this
transplant going ahead?
Brian is in need of a cornea (eye)
transplant and without it he will most certainly go
blind
Would the Shari’ah
court be FOR or AGIANST this
transplant going ahead?
Would the Shari’ah court have been FOR or
AGIANST this transplant going ahead?
After loosing her limbs to an infection when
she was young– Jessica became the first
woman to ever receive a hand transplant.

Watch the following 2 clips... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoAk5mcmV4c&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvUkT3vGs24&feature=relmfu
Is there anything about face transplants that concerns you
more than transplantation of internal organs?
What do you think Christians/Muslims would think about this? Would it be allowed? Explain your response.
SIMILAR DIFFERENT
Draw the following table in the front of your books...
Use what you have learnt about Christian and Muslim teachings about organ transplants and donation to list
any similarities and any differences. Once you have some ideas share with a partner.

Both believe that organ donation can be seen as ‘playing God’
Muslims believe in Bodily resurrection so some disagree as
the organs will be needed.
Both believe it is a loving and charitable thing to do.
Christians believe it does not affect the afterlife as only the soul is
resurrected.
Both believe your should not interfere with God creation.
Muslims believe live donors should be family members.
