Create a Nation
You will create a nation, then make a plan to improve it.
To begin with, follow these steps.
1. Draw an imaginary country and give it a name
2. Show 4 geographical features
3. Based on your features identify 3 major resources present in your country
4. Determine living areas in your country (i.e., cities, towns, villages, etc.)
5. Based on your resources what are two finished products which you could export
Create a NationWalking around the room, find from others at least 4 products/ resources that you would like to have. (5 minutes max)
What will make your nation Stronger?

Develop a 5 point plan (bullets work fine) to get those wanted items under your control to benefit your country.
The goal is, as brainstormed before, is to make your country strong.

American Imperialism
Imperialism: America Joins
the Club
IMPERIALISM: one people or
country ruling the affairs of another people or country (“mother country”)
Around the turn of the 20th century, American interest in imperialist expansion grew for a number of reasons.
Why American Imperialism?
1. Economics: U.S. industry
needed (as always) raw materials and new markets for American goods
Why American imperialism?
2. Nationalism: Extreme devotion to
one’s own nation, coupled with the idea that nations benefit from competition
To prove its greatness, the U.S. needed to compete with European countries. In order to compete with Europe, the U.S. needed colonies.
Why American Imperialism?
3. Social Darwinism: The idea that some people and ways of life are better – “more fit” – than others
America should expand because:
1) it deserved to; and 2) expansion would be
good for those “other people”.
