A PROUD BEGINNING?
1885 -Prescott keeps territorial capital
-Florence gains a prison
-Phoenix awarded asylum and $100,000
-Tucson awarded University and $25,000
1889 -Established as a land grant institution
1891 -Classes in Agriculture and Mines met
with 32 students and six teachers
It was a bold move in 1885 to start a university in the middle of the desert before Arizona was even a state. Faculty and students have been
on the cutting edge ever since.

THE UA TODAY The annual UA budget is $1.1 billion:
– 28.6% state funds– 71.4% tuition and fees, research grants, contracts,
and auxiliary services
One of Tucson’s largest employers with over 14,403 employees
UA Economic Impact on Arizona (FY 2004):More than $2.3 billion and 41,300 in-state jobs created
Serves 37,036 students in 18 colleges and 12 schools
Nearly 2,600 faculty members teach more than 37,000 students in 174 buildings.
There are 18 colleges offering 300 degree programs on three campuses.
