Local News

Last week, from May 27th to the 31st, the latest edition of the Euronoise conference was held in Hersonissos, Crete. The conference was a success with 410 papers submitted to the proceedings and more than 600 researchers attending. Besides the main sessions and events, the YAN was represented at the EAA General Assembly and was given the opportunity to organise two gatherings for young acousticians.

EAA General Assembly

The General Assembly approved the YAN action and the members seem satisfied about how the network grows and touches more acousticians each year. It was also the opportunity for the YAN to organise it's yearly board meeting and the outcomes are very promising. After the new newsletter template, we will work on improving our presence on social networks and online with a brand new website (partnering with the EAA Fenestra team). We have a few other ideas to better serve you but to out them all, we'll need energy and a few new board members! Send us a mail if you would like to join!

The YAN Events

The first one consisted in two presentations: the traditionnal presentation of the YAN action towards early career acousticians by the board and a presentation by Pr. Michael Vorländer (RWTH, Aachen) of a Summer School on Acoustics to be held in Leuven, Belgium on September 6-8, 2019. This training session will be organised besides the next ICA 2019 and the organisation team is working for it to be free of charge to attend. Stay tuned!

The second was an unforgettable YAN social event that took place right on the beach of Hersonissos, in a partner restaurant. The awesome weather, great food and more than 70 Young Acousticians allowed to set a tremendous new official record of attendance in a YAN event!

On behalf of the YAN Board and team, we would like to thank all of the attendants. We are really looking forward the next event!

▼ Left: The audience of the YAN presentation filled the room! Right: Beginning of the evening with about 40 acousticians... 30 more would come later.

Abstract

Marine renewable energy development raised concerns over the impact of underwater noise. Here we assess the acoustic impacts of an operating tidal current turbine (Paimpol-Bréhat site, France) on marine fauna. Its source level (SL) has been measured in situ using 19 drifting transects at distances between 100 m to 2400 m from the turbine. SL ranged from 118 to 152 dB re1 μPa@1 m in third-octave bands at frequencies between 40 and 8192 Hz. It is comparable to the SL of a 19 m boat travelling at 10kt speed. This SL was used to estimate the impact of this noise type based on acoustic propagation simulations. The acoustic footprint of the device corresponds to a 1.5 km radius disk. Our results show that within this area of greatest potential impact, physiological injury of the hearing apparatus of invertebrates, fishes and marine mammals is improbable. Behavioral disturbance may occur up to 1 km around the device for harbor porpoises only. This is of little concern for a single turbine. However, greater concern on turbine noise impact, particularly on behavioral reactions has to be granted for a farm with up to 100 turbine. The lack of consolidated knowledge on behavioral disturbances identifies the needs for specific research programs.

About the Author

Julie Lossent, 28 y.o., is a young researcher in passive underwater acoustics and soundscape ecology. In 2011, during her studies at the École des Mines d'Alès, Julie collaborated with the CHORUS research institute (  chorusacoustics.com  ) to perform passive acoustic monitoring and understand marine ecosystems. That is how she discovered underwater acoustics and the "world of silence" and led her to enter a PhD project at France Energies Marines on passive acoustics and benthic populations with applications to Marine Renewable Energies impact assessments. Since 2017 she joined CHORUS as technical director where, being a professional diver, she spends a third of her time on field work. She took part in projects all around the globe: Arctic and Antarctic regions, Saint Laurent estuary, Mediterranean Sea, English Channel, Philippines and French Polynesia. Her current topics include the sounds emitted by icebergs to locate these potential obstacles, the evaluation of the effectiveness of ecological restoration solutions by listening to the benthic biophony and the sounds of fish, the impact of anthropogenic sounds on marine life, etc.
