February 2012 Senior Adult Ministry
Join a Life Group Today! Even when we are separated physically, we are always together
as a part of God’s family in spirit and heart!
Dear Young at Heart,
Hebrews 10:25, “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encourag-
ing one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Welcome to June! The flowers are just beautiful. The trees are waiving praises to their creator
and in turn breathing God’s breath of pure oxygen into our lungs. There is something that is
even more beautiful to the Lord, the fellowship of kindred hearts and minds; the family of God.
This bond of love is the foundation of our relationship with Christ and finds its roots in what we
call our Life Groups.
A Life Group is a group of believers and seekers who are gathered in Jesus’ name and experi-
ence the presence and nurturing power of the Lord Jesus in a life changing way. It is the
church assembled in a close and accountable way; a place where everyone is included, remem-
bered and blessed. It is there, that everyone knows your name and values your life. In Life
Groups we love each other, we talk to and hear from God, we listen to one another and we learn
how to live. We present the gospel and even encourage each other to share the gospel. Here, we
celebrate wonderful moments and walk with each other through the difficult ones. Most of all,
our Life Groups cause us to love our Savior and one another more deeply. All this happens
whether you can attend physically or not. The Life Group is your family for life no matter
where you are. That love and belonging reaches across town and even across the ocean.
Have you joined a Life Group yet? You may say, how do I do that? Here’s how!
1. You can call our office anytime at 864-699-4211 and we will connect you with
our best helpers. They will give you some options for great groups who are meeting by
phone, text messages, online or even by personal calls. Then, a Life Group leader will be in
touch with you. There are groups that meet different days and times of the week. We are
here to help you get connected to a caring group of people who will love you as you grow
closer to Jesus.
2. Your “Care Callers” will also invite you to join a life group. They too will be glad to have one
of our helpers contact you right away.
A dear friend of mine once said, “if you’re not a member of a Sunday school class (Life Group),
You ain’t got no class!” That’s a funny way to say it, but it’s true. Your Life Group truly is your
family for life and the source of encouragement that you can depend on, especially now. So, join
today! Remember whether you live in Arkwright or Alaska, whether you are mobile or on mis-
sion from your home, you are loved, wanted and invited to be part of a life giving family, a Life
Group. By the way, your Life Group is waiting for you. They already love you because you’re

Message from the President… Johnny McCraw Hello friends,
Well, what a year this has been so far! It certainly has been different from the perspective
of our daily lives and events. As we celebrated New Years Day 2020, none of us would have
imagined the current circumstances we are facing. Our plans for almost everything for the
past three months have been affected and changed by the evolving circumstances around
us. We see and hear so many differing scenarios and advice from our leaders, “experts” and
of course, the media. How do we begin to sort all of this out?
I love music and am especially fond of the 60s music so many of us grew up with. One such
song I heard recently was “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds and written by Pete Seeger. Or
was it? The words (except for the last sentence) were actually penned by Solomon (whom
God granted great wisdom) in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. It starts out telling us “to everything there
is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven”. The current circumstances we face
are definitely out of our control (as is every day when you think about it), but have a pur-
pose under God’s plan. We can confidently face this and put our complete faith and trust in
God to accomplish His purpose. We can use the wisdom He has given us as we go through
this time and rest assured that this is a “season” of His choosing. Know that we can trust
Him regardless of these or any other circumstances. How comforting to know that God is
our one constant and He will never forsake us now or ever!
Please continue to lift each other up in prayer and call or email one another with words of
encouragement. As Sal mentions in his letter, Life Groups (or Sunday School classes as
most of us know it) are a wonderful way to fellowship and bond with each other as we study
our Bible and seek His wisdom and comfort. A lot of testimonies come from this experience
and hopefully, some of you can share yours in the upcoming months as God leads.
I love you all and hope we can see each other again very soon (even if it’s from a distance)!
In Christ’s love,
Johnny
Call soon, 864-583-7245, to update your contact information. Many have done that and
they’re so glad that they did! Also check out our website at www.fbs.org and or new Senior
Ministry Facebook page, FBS Senior Adult Ministry and help others to do the same.
Every graduating class has a story to tell regarding what made their year stand out from oth-
ers. Could it have been the worldwide influenza pandemic? The Korean War? The Vietnam
War? Was there something that your generation had to depend on the Lord to help you over-
come? How did your faith see you through such a challenging time?
It would be so rewarding for you, OUR SENIORS, to share your graduation year’s stories
with today’s graduating seniors. As their year has been marked in history with a pandemic,
you can reassure them they are not alone with a disruption. A note from you would encour-
age our young people to trust in the Lord Jesus and remind them that better days are ahead.
You are our beloved seasoned seniors! We are asking that you sprinkle your faith and wis-
dom on the graduates of 2020 by writing a few lines to tell your Christ based story. You can
email your wisdom to [email protected] or drop it in the mail addressed to First Baptist
Spartanburg, 250 East Main St. Spartanburg, SC 29306. Attn: Rebecca Steadman.
Call 864-583-7245 for any questions.
