Entrepreneurs are the life blood of any economy. It is their success that drives innovation and creates jobs. The 25 young entrepreneurs featured here have created 280 jobs and all of them have participated in JA-YE entrepreneurship education programmes.

The JA-YE Europe Young Entrepreneur of the Year Competition is now in its third year. These are inspiring success stories and each of them will tell you how important it was to them to have had an entrepreneurial experience at school. It was there that they learned the basics and, thanks to their teachers and volunteer business advisers, the encouragement they needed to strike out on their own.

Their entrepreneurial talent encompasses a wide range of activity including educational tools and services, web and application development and a host of innovative products.

‘Young’ entrepreneurs have perhaps the greatest potential of all—with a lifetime of opportunity in front of them. As you will see, some have been at it for several years already—even at the tender age of 25!—while others have barely begun. We applaud them all for their boldness and their spirit.

Jørgen Clausencome from a family of entrepreneurs, and Danfoss is still a family-owned business today.

It is this heritage which has stemmed my big interest and passion for entrepreneurship education. I feel we have an obligation to educate and inspire young

people and give them as many opportunities as possible to see the fantastic world of entrepreneurship. To this end, I am a member of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences and board member for Young Enterprise Denmark.

Organisations like JA-YE Europe are making a considerable contribution to increasing the number of people who choose to become entrepreneurs. The young people in this book are outstanding examples of the impact such educational initiatives can have. I have a dream that entrepreneurship will fl ourish in Europe so that we can compete with the many new economies and be able to create workplaces and new industries for many years to come.

I hope that the young entrepreneurs of the coming years will fi nd the same love and happiness in innovation and the development of new ideas, products and solutions that have made my own life so rich. The world of creation is by far the most rewarding you can possibly embrace – I hope for all of you that this world will also be yours!

Nothing beats the feeling you get when you have made a real diff erence to the world and to other people!

Danfoss is headquartered in Denmark and manufactures and sells products and solutions within the cooling and air conditioning industry with a turnover of 3.5 billion Euro in 2009. Danfoss is a global company with more than 25,000 employees and more than 100 factories worldwide that was started by an entrepreneur—Jørgen Clausen’s father—76 years ago in a room on top of the family farmhouse.

Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award Winners 2009

At a gala awards presentation in Brussels, Benjamin Kainz & Oscar Lundin, Founders of “Ung Omsorg” were awarded the JA-YE Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2009.

Benjamin and Oscar really impressed the judges because at the age of 21 and 20 respectively they had already built a successful social enterprise which employed over 400 people and has made a really positive impact on the lives of thousands of Swedish elderly. Now, one year on they have grown to employ 515 people.

When they received the award Oscar said; “We are honoured to receive this prestigious award. It means a lot to us and we are thankful to JA Sweden (Ung Foretagsamhet Sverige) for giving us the opportunity to try and test how to run a real company whilst we were still in secondary school.”

As a result of their award, over the past year, Oscar and Benjamin have been invited to take part in the following European promotional opportunities:

• CNBC article

• Euractiv article

• European Commission Your World, Your Business video & printed teaching resources

• Speakers at the closing conference of the European Year of Innovation & Creativity, Stockholm

• Speaker at JA-YE Europe Skills Summit panel session

They have also received wide spread media coverage in their home country and throughout Europe. Their achievement also prompted one of their key customers to advertise themselves promoting their link to the young entrepreneurs.

One year on we caught up with Oscar to find out what he thinks of the JA-YE Europe Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Why do you think the JA-YE Europe Young Entrepreneur Award is a good idea?

“Personally I think the Young Entrepreneur Award is great initiative. It shows that great national entrepreneurship has a possibility to make a global impact and that each one of us could create projects and business structures that could grow from one country to another if we just keep on fighting.

“The European Award says that we have to learn from each other and have the self confidence to think big and believe that it’s possible to change the world. Many problems and opportunities are not just national.”

What opportunities has winning the award brought you?

“For us as entrepreneurs the Young Entrepreneur Award shows that our company is solving an important problem, with potential not just in our home country, but also in the whole Western world.

“It has given us better self confidence and a chance to make an impact on both a European and International level.”

What opportunities has winning the award brought you?

“I think it’s a great way to spread the vision and brand of your company abroad.

The people who are connected to the JA-YE movement are all individuals who believe in the power of entrepreneurship and have new contacts and ideas who could help entrepreneurs and start-ups to grow in a good way!”

Age: 24 & 24Employees: 7Business idea: An easy and efficient way for sport teams and sport clubs to simplify the communication between players, trainers and parents. Year founded: 2005Website: www.laget.se and www.klubben.se

“It all started when we played football and bandy and noticed a huge problem with getting information out to the team, everything from cancelled matches to pack lists before a training camp”, explains Johan. “When we had the chance to start our own company through Junior Achievement Sweden it felt like the perfect opportunity to try and solve this problem.”

The first product they developed was a service for sport teams where they can create their own homepage to facilitate communication. The service is free of charge for a team or club to use with the site being financed by adverts instead. Mikael explains “It’s a win-win model where the sports club get a homepage for free and the advertisers get an obvious and clear target group.”

Now, five years later, the company has grown from a “Company Programme” company to a large and expansive company that provides a service which is used by over one million Swedish people every month.

Simon-Pierre founded the company ArtiCadeau sprl with two friends who he knew from college. “We discovered a gap in the market for high quality hand-made products and developed our business model to focus only on products that are fully hand-made in Belgium.”

At first the company focused on selling their hand-made candles, writing items and fashion accessories only through their website. Recently, they have enlarged their customer base by selling the candles directly to florists to use as a decorative item in their arrangements.

This new business development is already proving very successful only a few months after its start. Simon-Pierre explains his plans for the future; “we hope to continue this promising beginning. We want to increase our growing popularity and seduce more and more people by these unique items created in Belgium.”

Age: 22Employees: 2Business idea: Simple, effective solution for collecting medical stool samples. Year founded: 2006

Christian explains; “to understand our product you must understand the issue we solve. In the process of collecting stool samples patients often have to resort to creative solutions. Our product is a paper sheet that is placed on the toilet covering the bowl area. The patient then uses the toilet as normal. The area covering the bowl is then easily reachable for the patient and there is no need for other creative solutions.”

Patent problems and a bankrupt investor meant that Christian had to leave his previous job to work full time to save the company. After a long patent process the product was introduced to market in late 2009 and with an estimated market of nearly 20 million samples per year Christian thinks that after months of struggle the future is now brighter than ever.

“As I have learned, experienced and fought for my company my big inspiration has been working with the Danish and European JA-YE alumni organizations” explains Christian, “the support and interest from other entrepreneurs has brought me to where I am today.”
