When you will listen to Hashems voice the Torah declares: ברוך אתה בעיר,וברוך אתה בשדהYou will be blessed in the cityyou will be blessed in the field” . The Medrash has an unusual reading of this verse saying that it refers to blessings which will come as a result of a persons home being located in close proximity to their Shul. Never an excuse to miss a Davening due to weather or laziness (and a plug for living in the Swanseas!). Perhaps this refers not only to the geography but to the Hashkafa as well. When there is no distance or disconnect between our behavior in the Shul and the way we act in our homes - that is truly a blessing. The same way we behaverespectfully in Shul choosing our words carefully and acting in an exemplary fashion, we can not let our guard down at home. Food for thought ! A last will and testament of Janin Haining, a Scottish missionary who died in Auschwitz at the age of 47, was recently discovered in Scotland, along with some 70 previously unseen photos of her and her Jewish students. Haining, a Scottish missionary fluent in German and Hungarian, moved to Budapest in 1932 to work in a boarding school which during the war offered sanctuary to Jewish girls, most of them orphans. Haining declined to leave Hungary when the Nazis started arresting and detaining the Hungarian Jews. She chose to remain in Hungary to protect her students. She was sent to Auschwitz after refusing to abandon the girls. Haining is the only Scot listed in the Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum. Her handwritten will and several of Hainings personal effects including a radio, typewriter, fur coat and watches were among the items found in Edinburgh, Scotland. Documents detailing demands for her release from Auschwitz were also discovered. These historical items were donated to the National Library of Scotland.
