    RABBI DOVID ROSENBAUM

One of the most difficult questions to ask oneself in life is, “How well am I really doing?” What might beeven more challenging is the question, “How can I improve?” Many of us are so confounded and terrifiedby these questions that we don’t even give ourselves a chance to perform teshuvah (repentance) in aneffective manner. Are we comfortable recognizing our flaws? Even if we are, will we be able to correctthem? Why attempt a mission doomed for failure?

During the High Holiday season, the optimum time for introspection, it behooves us to reflect on adiscussion in Meseches Shabbos, 88b. The Talmud recounts that, as Moshe ascended to Heaven toreceive the Torah, the angels asked Hashem, “What is man that You should remember him?” Clearly man isflawed, whereas G-d and His Torah are perfect. Why allow man’s imperfections to detract from the Torah’spurity? Hashem invites Moshe to respond. He proceeds to list off different mitzvos (commandments) thatwould not seem to be relevant, or, more significantly, challenging to angels. Just to list a few; do they liveamong the nations, thereby being tempted to serve other gods? Do they work during the week, therebybringing significance to the rest which occurs on the Shabbos? Do they conduct business dealings, forwhich there may be a temptation to swear falsely? Do they live with jealousy? Are they driven by theyetzer hara (evil inclination)? The angels concede the argument to Moshe.

What is Moshe really responding to the angels? Is his argument merely technical? It would seem thatMoshe is demonstrating that the Torah, and service of Hashem in general, is not rooted in perfection, rather in improvement. Our goal must not be to right all of our wrongs, rather to be a bit better this year.Had G-d desired perfection, He surely could have chosen the angels. Instead, He desired growth, and, forthat mission, we indeed are perfect.

May we, and all of our families, merit to be written and sealed in the Book of Life, and may we all seize theopportunities, both during this season and throughout the entire year, to truly grow as people and deepenour relationships with Hashem.

    Dear Members and Friends,

Our shul has continued to undergo changes as well as flourish over past year. Most notably, wemarked the first yahrzeit of our beloved Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer, zt”l, this past year. Tomemorialize and show our appreciation for his work the shul is planning to dedicate our ArcolaAvenue building to his memory.

Building dedication to Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer, zt”lThis coming year, our shul is undertaking a new campaign. The board approved theappointment of a renovation committee comprised of Dr. Howie Schulman, Mr. Bill Zimbalist,Mrs. Debi Rudmann, and Mr. Noach Wolfe. Their goal is make our Arcola Avenue buildingsuitable for dedication to the memory of Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer, zt”l. To that end, they plan tohave the outside of our building renovated so that the old cedar shingles are removed and thebuilding is to be resurfaced to look like our newer addition. This is a tremendous undertaking forour community. And we are fortunate to have a dedicated committee to see it through so thatwe will properly honor the memory and accomplishments of Rabbi Anemer.

    BOOK REVIEW

    continued on page 17

A Timeless People, Photo Albums of American Jewish Life,By Saul H. Landa, Gefen Publishing House, Jerusalem, 5771

    Reviewed by David Hornestay

This remarkable volume of photojournalism by a remarkable author is certain to inform andplease in both words and pictures. Dr. Landa, a New Jersey dentist, ordained Rabbi, andclimber of Mount Kilimanjaro, visited eighteen American Jewish communities and produced aunique blend of history, vintage photos, contemporary description, and current photography.

The communities range from the well-known, like New York’s Lower East Side , Baltimore, and our own Washington, to Bangor, Maine, and Seattle. Familiar sepia-toned New Yorkscenes of Hester Street, immigrants, pushcarts, and the late Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt arejuxtaposed with interior shots of the restored Bialystoker and Eldridge Street Synagogues.Interviews with today’s leaders reflect a pride in the survival of Judaism in the cramped area thatgave so many their start in the New World, dramatized by shuls which have maintained dailyminyanim for 150 years, and where HIAS is still there to help new immigrants’ adjustment.

The many of us who came late to Washington may be surprised to learn that there were Jewshere in 1840, and that the first building of Adas Israel, then Orthodox, was dedicated in 1876with President Ulysses S. Grant in attendance. Old buildings and old rallies have given way tomodern edifices and high-tech demonstrations, and the continued growth of the nation’s capital’sJewish institutions and amenities is documented. Our former Shepherd Park neighbors, Pauland Helen Sperling, were among Rabbi Landa’s primary sources on the development of thelocal Jewish community.

But equally fascinating are the chapters on Charleston, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Phoenix,Newport/Providence, and, in fact, all eighteen in one way or other. Charleston had a Sephardiccongregation in 1749 with some very demanding rules for members (Note for David Mazel:offending the President drew a fine.). The city’s Jewish population, almost wiped out in the CivilWar, struggled for many years, but has rallied more recently under young, dynamic leadersmixed with resolute old-timers and now features a thriving day school.

Landa’s visit to New Orleans yielded the story of how emissaries from ZAKA, the famed Israelirescue and recovery organization, went out in boats and retrieved seven Sifrei Torah fromKatrina’s flood waters for proper burial. In Memphis, home of the 3,000-seat Baron Hirsch

Synagogue, he was treated to the tale, already known to some of us, of Elvis Presley’sShabbos Goy service to the family of our Chaim Fruchter.

But perhaps the most surprising and gratifying piece of history in the book ishow the Reformand Conservative Rabbis of Providence, Rhode Island, alarmed at the state of Jewish educationin their town, became prime movers in the establishment of the Providence Hebrew Day Schoolin 1947. It’s still doing well.

“A Timeless People” has all that and much more.

    Amounts are in thousands;

As I noted last year, YISE utilizes an accrual accounting system. We record dues as they areearned during the fiscal year, not when dues are collected. Hence, the dues numbers at the topof the chart are for record keeping, but they are not “money in the bank.” That fact is reflectedin our accounts receivable. Those large balances in accounts receivable each year at the bottomof the chart mean that our collected revenues are less than what we budget to meet ourexpenses. Nevertheless, our expenses still have to be paid. We cover any gap by withdrawingcash from our reserves (savings the shul keeps in bank accounts) to pay expenses that shouldcome from expected operating income.

From the President’s Desk continued from page 5

    continued on page 20

  • Overall, our shul is doing better now than we did just a few years ago. Our revenues haveincreased so that they now exceed our expenses. Plus, our accounts receivable have declined, albeit with a slight upward bump last year. Our margin is still thin but the picture is nonethelessgood news. You can continue to help your shul by paying your account in a timely manner andby supporting your shul whenever you can.

Our shul continues to grow in members as can be seen from the growth of dues. But we are along way from capacity. If you have friends or family in our community, I invite you to bring themto your shul and see just how special Young Israel Shomrai Emunah is. Rabbi Rosenbaum(more below) would be delighted to greet them; you can take them to a kiddush (more below);and they can see for themselves just what makes our shul such a special place.

In terms of expenses, the shul has seen a marked increase on that side of the ledger but forgood things that we need and use. Our compensation line item has increased markedly. A majorcontributor to our compensation is the growth of the nursery where Mrs. Lianne Heller has hiredmore teachers for its expanded programs.

Our occupancy costs are another major expense. As our shul infrastructure ages, it simplytakes more money to keep up with repairs and maintenance. Our executive director, Mr. AlanZimmerman, has been diligent in this area, but there is much to do. You can help your shul bytreating it as you would your home and being careful with our building and internal systems suchas the plumbing. If you see something that needs repair, please call the office. An early repairusually saves money over the long run.

Our NurseryOur YISE Nursery is thriving and this coming year it will be at its maximum capacity. Mrs.Lianne Heller and the Nursery committee have continued to do an outstanding job of expandingprograms and services for our community. If you are considering a Nursery for your children, you owe it to yourself and your children to call Mrs. Heller at 301-593-7365. See for yourselfthe warmth and care the teachers will provide your children.

Our annual banquetOur annual YISE banquet continues to soar with wonderful attendance and great food anddrink. Mr. Jules Meisler has continued to produce a professional and beautiful journal thathonors not only the honorees but the shul and all our attendees. This year Mrs. Barbara Priceand Mrs. Nancy James have agreed to co-chair the event for their third year in a row! Successbreeds success and we look forward to another outstanding good time in just a few shortmonths. When you receive your invitation, reply affirmatively right away.

CHOOSE LIFE: GEMILAS CHESED IN KEMP MILL

    SYMPATHY TO OUR MEMBERS

    M

Our kiddushesYISE often has three kiddushes on a Shabbos and you’ll see that our income for kiddusheshas increased over the past two years. We owe our kiddush committee and all our volunteersour gratitude for their tireless work to set up and clean up. Mr. Josh Breitstein, chair of thekiddush committee, is always looking for volunteers to help. If you’re thinking “What can I doto help?” please contact Josh.

A few years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Rosenthal saw a need for a weekly kiddush at the 8:45minyan. They generously sought to fill that need and thus began the haimish kiddush. A littleover a year ago, Mr. Raphael Ginsburg decided that he could help. He took the lead andorganized a devoted group to fund a kiddush each Shabbos. Thus began the Haimish KiddushGroup. It’s been going strong ever since.

Our RabbisThis past year the board decided to hire a “new” rabbi. Rabbi Yehoshua Levy is now ourSephardit minyan leader. Rabbi Levy has been a part of our community for many years—theboard simply decided to make it official.

This is our first complete year with Rabbi Dovid Rosenbaum as our rabbi. His energy andenthusiasm is boundless: He offers weekday classes during the day and in the evenings. He hasa set time for phone calls: dial (301) 593-4465, ext. 405, every weekday between 10:00 a.m.and 11:00 a.m. to speak with him directly. He often gives sermons twice on Shabbos with aclass between mincha and maariv as well. We are, indeed, fortunate to have such a leader.

Installation of Rabbi RosenbaumIn honor of Rabbi Rosenbaum’s new appointment, the shul held its first rabbinic installation inover half a century. With many other volunteers, Mrs. Barbara Price and Mrs. Sarah Maslowco-chaired the packed event. It was truly an evening to remember. If you missed it, well, it’slike missing Halley’s comet. There’s sure to be another siting, but (hopefully) not anytime soon.

Our kitchen tenantOur shul kitchen has new cooks and crew. Last summer the board approved renting ourkitchen to Wrap2Go for six months. I guess Wrap2Go enjoyed their time with us because thispast January they asked to stay longer. So the board decided to rent our kitchen to them for athree-year term. Wrap2Go is an excellent “tenant.” They have helped organize our kitchen andhave worked closely with our office and kitchen committee. We are happy to have them.

  • From the President’s Desk continued from page 21You should know that Wrap2Go is not exclusive to our kitchen. While they are in our kitchenmost days, our agreement does not preclude you from using other caterers for your functions. We like Wrap2Go, but we gladly welcome other caterers to our kitchen for your events, too.

Our sanctuary and lobbyThis past year our sanctuary underwent a flooring upgrade. The old carpet was replaced withnew carpet tiles throughout the main level and the balcony. In addition, our lobby carpet, whichwas ragged and torn, was replaced with tile. While we were at it, the shul replaced the sink andcabinet in our lobby with a new sink, Silestone top, and new cabinet. If you like what you see, please thank Mrs. Debi Rudmann who worked with the office and contractors to make it happen. It was a big job, and took lots of time, but Debi was there every step of the way.

Our safety committeeThis year the board approved our new safety committee: Mr. Ken Saks (chair) and Dr. RonSheinson. They have worked hard to improve our shul’s safety features. Notably, they placedthree cell phones throughout the shul so that if there’s an emergency, say on Shabbos, a phone isclose at hand to call 9-1-1. While we hope we will not have to use the phones, our experiencesays we are better off with them nearby.

Thank youFinally, please join me in thanking our Board of Directors for their leadership and guidance overthe past year. They all put in tremendous service for our shul and I am delighted to serve youwith them.

Of course, we have many other active and wonderful volunteers. The list is simply too long torecount here. They truly make our shul and community what we have today. Please join me inextending a special thank you to all our members who make possible much of what we dependupon in the shul.

When you see a volunteer or staff member please thank them for their service. Everything weenjoy and come to expect is a product of their work.

Finally, thank you for your contributions to our shul. You, our members, make our shul specialand a place where we all feel at home.

May the New Year be filled with health, happiness, and success, for you and your families.

    JOB SEARCH ACROSS MULTIPLE GENERATIONS

byDavid Marwick, Max Rudmann, and Avi Zemelman

Anemic economic growth and gales of layoffs in the past three years have led dozens ofjobseekers within and outside Kemp Mill to seek assistance from JobAssist. Ourneighborhood-based effort cuts across generation lines — from high school students to BabyBoomers. While the focus of the Kemp Mill Employment Assistance Initiative is mostly onadults that have been in the workforce for several years, we also hear from high school andcollege students (and their parents), as there is a widespread understanding that finding workin almost all occupations now takes longer and must start earlier. Students seek internships andother work opportunities in order to learn their options and to show off skills andaccomplishments to pickier employers.

Whether communicating with teenagers or seasoned workers, JobAssist offers advice formultiple aspects of a successful employment search: developing and strengthening resumes, handling different rounds of interviews, developing and sustaining networks for identifying jobleads, and providing information about potential interviewers and employers. Because manyKemp Mill residents are willing to help, we are able to connect jobseekers with those in theirfields who can offer invaluable tips on how to assess opportunities, potential employers, andthe highlighting of skills that will help in gaining interviews. For those seeking a governmentposition, some community members have provided invaluable coaching in how to address jobrequirements. Continuous interaction and feedback to jobseekers, through workshops, emails, and phone calls, demonstrate solidarity, and strengthen the resilience needed to getthrough employment-seeking efforts that frequently run for several months.

Recognizing that the majority of jobs are not widely publicized, JobAssist has offeredseveral workshops by Kemp Mill professionals focusing on how job search can be enhancedby using social media, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Large attendance at thesesessions has cut across several generations.

In addition to helping jobseekers develop their own networks, JobAssist makes referrals toother and more extensive resources. These include state and local government agencies, inaddition to the local and national Jewish organizations that have expanded their efforts inhoning jobsearch skills. We get and make referrals to the local Jewish Social Service Agencyand Baltimore-based JobLink.

  • 33

continued from page 32Job search Across Generations

Because jobseekers often feel isolated during the long haul of their search and need specificcoaching for their particular circumstances, we hope to develop a job search group to meetregularly and provide much-needed support as well as significant job search tips.

A young, highly credentialed professional, who continues to seek a full-time job and has lostunemployment benefits after a year of searching, quietly assessed what JobAssist offers: “Youhave given me chizuk (strength). That means a lot to me.” JobAssist helps because of leadsfrom residents and their willingness to extend a hand to those who need it. We seek yourassistance in allowing JobAssist to achieve its objective of providing guidance and support tojob seekers. Job Assist could benefit from the input from those who are currently gainfullyemployed and those who are retired in sharing their knowledge and experience in helping thosewho are currently seeking employment. Please contact Avi Zemelman to indicate youravailability to participate in this community initiative of helping our fellow community members intheir time of need.

    CHESED IN KEMP MILL

    continued on page 40

They converge from every corner of Kemp Mill Estates to make a minyan and to prepare mealsfor the shiva home. Even before comforting fellow mourners, Kemp Mill residents extendthemselves in diverse ways to help each other, aware that we need each other to faceincreasingly common and devastating challenges, ranging from unemployment and depletedsavings, the vagaries of weather, and the illnesses and isolation that may accompany aging.

Over the years, Kemp Mill residents have taken a variety of steps to mitigate the sting ofeconomic want among fellow Jews. Year long, the locally run Franco Foundation and theYehudah Mond Foundation provide modest gifts of cash and scrip to a number of individualsand families in this area that struggle to pay rent, meet other basic necessities, and makeShabbos and Yom Tov.

Every year since its launching in 2003, the Kemp Mill Employment Assistance Initiative hasresponded to scores of jobseekers’ request for help in developing and fine-tuning resumes, sharpening interview skills, and expanding networks in a wide range of occupations. Atworkshops and support groups, through emails and phone conversations, advice on everyaspect of finding employment, and job leads are provided to professionals, students, and thosereturning to the work force. Relying extensively on local talent for assistance and referrals,JobAssist has helped place, or otherwise supported jobsearch efforts that can run many months. To offer or receive assistance, please contact Avi Zemelman, [email protected]

Kemp Millians have also developed a number of educational and social programs to assist thosecaring for aging parents or planning for their own senior years. In the past three years, aneldercare series, under the auspices of Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington and localsynagogues, has offered speakers on diverse topics - legal, financial, religious, and mentalhealth. For more information, contact [email protected]. Volunteers have alsorecently organized a monthly series on Jewish History that has become popular, giving areaapartment dwellers an opportunity to learn and socialize. In collaboration with the Boys’Yeshiva of Greater Washington and Shomrai’s Chesed Committee, visits have been made toseniors with limited mobility or at assisted living homes. A new effort is also underway,GoldenNetwork, to provide Jewish study opportunities to the aging in this region.

for the YISE Nursery parents & childrenand for all Klal Yisrael.

    The YISE Nursery Staff

Approaching Rosh Hashanah, with another year almost behind us now, do you wonder aboutthe new challenges ahead, and the old ones that will continue? What sorts of obstacles willYISE face in serving its community? The economy remains extremely volatile. Real estate remains depressed and the job marketcontinues to be tough on almost everyone. Under such conditions YISE retains its most valuableasset- its members. Programs continue to be scheduled, shiurim are offered on most days andsimchas continue to be celebrated.Volunteers continue to be the backbone of these efforts. On committees, in the kitchen onShabbos and Yom Tov, assisting with preparations for the High Holy Days you’ll find ourmembers giving of their time and energy to make sure things run properly. Take the time to lookat how your favorite function in the Shul is carried out. Look for the volunteers in thebackground helping make YISE a better place for is all.And if there is an area that needs improvement, consider offering your time as well as advice toget things going. Call the office and let us know if you are available to help. We can be reachedat 301-593-4465, ext. 401, 402 or 403, or at [email protected].
