What you do to play the game: 1. Divide the group into two teams. 2. Give each team a set of RESPECT Cards. For non-reading groups, briefly explain the words/actions on each card. 3. Give teams time to sort their RESPECT Cards into two piles. They should make one pile of cards that show respect and one pile of cards not showing respect. 4. Establish a starting line (using the tape) and set up the hula-hoops about 15 feet from the starting line. 5. In one hoop place the “RESPECT” Activity Page and in the other hoop place the “RESPECT . . . NOT” Activity Page. 6. When teams finish separating their RESPECT Cards, they will compete in a relay race. Taking a RESPECT Card, one kid from each team races to the hoop and places the RESPECT Card in the hoop that best describes the action on the card. They return to their team and then the next kid races to place another RESPECT Card in the correct hoop. 7. The first team to put all their RESPECT Cards in the correct hoops wins. 8. After a winner has been declared, take the cards from the “RESPECT… NOT” hoop and brainstorm ways to make the scenario show respect. Potential discussion topics for these scenarios are listed below: What are things you can do to show respect to someone who is talking to you? Get Their Attention! (5-10 min) Materials: 2 sets of “RESPECT Cards” (Activity Page cut apart), “RESPECT” and “RESPECT . . . NOT” Activity Pages, 2 hula-hoops, painter’s tape

Respect? What you do to play the game:

1. Divide the group into two teams. 2. Give each team a set of RESPECT Cards. For non-reading groups,

briefly explain the words/actions on each card. 3. Give teams time to sort their RESPECT Cards into two piles. They should

make one pile of cards that show respect and one pile of cards not showing respect.

8. After a winner has been declared, take the cards from the “RESPECT…

NOT” hoop and brainstorm ways to make the scenario show respect. Potential discussion topics for these scenarios are listed below: • What are things you can do to show respect to someone who is

talking to you? (listening to them, making eye contact, not interrupting, etc.)

• What about the words you choose? How can words show respect? What about the way you speak?

• Sometimes your parents make you mad or they frustrate you. What are things you can do even when you are mad to show respect to your parents? What are things to remember to help you show respect even when you are mad? (show God respect because He is in charge of everything, you respect God when you respect the people He made and God made your parents, etc.)

• Your parents ask you to do something and you don’t want to do it. How does your attitude show respect?

Sometimes it is really easy to show respect to your parents, and sometimes it’s more challenging. God created your parents in His image and placed you in their care. You should work at showing your parents they are important to you because [Bottom Line] you respect God when you respect your parents.

Bible Lesson (10-15 min) Materials: Bibles

Pass out Bibles and assist the children in finding Ephesians 6.

Begin by reading Ephesians 6:1-3 as the children follow along. Then, ask the following questions:

1. Who are you supposed to obey? (Your parents) 2. Why should you obey your parents? (It is right!) 3. Why should you honor your father and mother? (It is a commandment

from God and so that you may enjoy a long and good life.) 4. Why do you think people who obey and honor their parents will have a

long and good life? (God will bless them, they listen to their parents’ advice to be safe, they will believe what their parents’ taught them about God and chose to follow Him, etc.)

Tell kids that you’re going to give them a scenario. They will first decide if the kid is being respectful or disrespectful of his parents or grandparents. If the kid is being respectful, they will act out the scenario. If the kid is being disrespectful, they should talk about how to change the scenario so the kid is being respectful, and then act it out. As you go through the scenarios, help arrange the groups so that every kid has the option to participate.

Scenarios: • Jami’s mom tells her to clean her room. Jami says she will, but then she

sneaks downstairs to play a video game with her brother. • Lamar’s mom is really tired after a long day at work. After dinner,

Lamar’s dad asks Lamar to help him clear the table, put away the leftovers, AND put the dishes in the dishwasher. He usually only has to clear his own plate, but he does it all without complaining.

• Toni’s stepmom tells her it’s time to go to bed. Toni doesn’t want to; her dad never makes her go to bed this early. She says, “No! Dad always lets me stay up later than this!”

• Karson’s dad is sick and in bed. He has asked Karson and his brother Kris to be quiet so he can sleep. Karson and Kris end up getting mad at each other about what quiet game they are going to play, they start yelling at each other, and their dad wakes up.

• Max KNOWS his grandma doesn’t like it when he whines when she asks him to do something. When she asks him to help find her glasses for the FOURTH time today, he is frustrated, but he says, “Sure, Grandma. I’ll help you.”

These are only just a FEW of the many situations you might face with your parents. But whatever the situation, it’s important to treat your parents with

respect. [Bottom Line] You respect God when you respect your parents. It’s not always easy, and there will be times when you just don’t want to. We’ve all been there. But it’s what we need to do. This week, whenever you find yourself wanting to do something that shows disrespect to your parents, take a minute to ask God to help you show respect, and then do it! Memory Verse Practice (5-10 min) Materials: 1 Hula-hoop (or 2 for larger groups), memory verse cards and pins

1. Read the verse aloud (see margin), and invite the children to practice it with you.

2. Get into a circle with your group. Form two circles if you have more than 10 group members.

3. Place the hula-hoop on your wrist and have everyone hold hands around the circle.

4. While reciting the verse together, move the hula-hoop around the circle by stepping in and out of the hoop and lifting arms to get the hoop around the next person. DO NOT let go of hands.

5. Continue until the hoop has circled the group 3 full times. 6. If a child is prepared to recite the verse by himself/herself, allow an

opportunity. Award a Romans 12:10 pin to any child who does so accurately.

7. Encourage the kids to practice saying and living out their verse at home this week! Send memory verse cards with children who have not received them.

Application Activity (10 min) Materials: Parent cards, markers or crayons Hand out the parent cards and markers or crayons. Show kids how to fold the page in half to make a card (with the writing on the inside). Read what the card says. Tell kids to each think of one thing they can do to show respect to their parents. It could be by doing what they say, going to bed on time, or eating dinner without complaining. Tell kids they can either write that thing in their card or you will come around and write it for them as they draw on their cards. Allow plenty of time for kids to draw on their cards. Tell them they can also write other things to their parents on their cards if they wish. ©2017 The reThink Group, Inc.
