Audits and reports on management and employee safety performance. Prepares and distributes safety related presentations such as bulletins, alerts, and articles. Monitors and evaluates the progress of the unit towards meeting goals and makes adjustments in objectives, work plans, schedules, and commitment of resources. May be required to work after hours as DC Water’s representative on the citywide emergency response team or as an Emergency Liaison Officer (ELO) for the Authority in the District of Columbia’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA). Performs other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the Manager, Safety Operations or Director, Occupational Safety & Health.

High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate and two (2) years of progressive experience directly related to work involved with repairing, and maintaining water distribution and/or sewer collection systems.

Must possess and maintain current a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, Commercial Driver’s License – Class B with air brakes, Tanker’s N Endorsement.

Skill in the use of the full range of tools and equipment of the trade, including backhoes, dump trucks, and compressors.

Ability to determine appropriate methods, equipment, materials, and techniques required for performing work assignments. Ability to perform tasks in a safe manner. Ability to read maps. Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy object (up to 90 pounds) on highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.

There are routine risks of exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution. The position may involve periodic risks of exposure to raw sewage, chemical substances and physical trauma of minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns.

Incumbent is required to work shift work, holidays, and weekends. Incumbent is subject to being placed on call during hours and schedule identified by the Authority and is required to work overtime during emergencies.

Job Description: Serves as a crewmember and performs various tasks to support the operations of the water distribution and sewer collection systems. Major activities include, but not limited to, performing the repair, flushing water distribution system, replacement and lining of mains and service lines, laterals, taps, fire hydrants, valves, catch basins etc. Under the guidance of higher-grade employee, performs inspection and investigation of system problems.
